Lou Correa announces his campaign for Congress

U.S. Rep. Loretta Sanchez announced today that she is going to run for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Barbara Boxer. It didn’t take long for O.C. politicians to start lining up to run for Sanchez’ seat in the 46th Congressional District.

Former State Senator Lou Correa, who lost to Andrew Do last year when they both ran for the O.C. Board of Supervisors, announced today that he is running to replace Sanchez in the U.S. House of Representatives.

“In response to the overwhelming encouragement of many of my friends and neighbors, many of whom I grew up with, I have decided to run for Congress,” Correa said. Continue reading→

A Los Angeles Times analysis of election results shows how Republicans can still win because Asian American voter turnout is so much higher than Latino turnout. The outcome, of an analysis of the recent Special Election in the 34th State Senate District, found that in the core of Santa Ana, where voting heavily favored Correa, only 22% of the absentee voters got around to returning their ballots, far below the state and county’s 50% return rate for absentee ballots in the 2014 general election. The unreturned ballots represented tens of thousands of votes.

The bad news for the Orange County Democrats is that Orange County’s famed blue donut hole, in Central Orange County, is now mostly red. The only Democratic Legislators left are U.S. Rep. Loretta Sanchez and State Assemblyman Tom Daly. Continue reading→

President pro Tempore De León Announces Rules Committee Appointments; Correa Tapped for High-Speed Rail Committee

SACRAMENTO – California Senate President pro Tempore Kevin de León (D-Los Angeles), Chair of the Senate Rules Committee, has announced the following appointments by the Rules Committee:

Honorable Lou Correa, a Democrat from Santa Ana, has been appointed to the High-Speed Rail Commission. Former Senator Correa is an attorney and served in the California Legislature from 2006 to 2014 and 1998 to 2004. He also served as an Orange County Supervisor from 2004 to 2006. In 2012, Correa helped ensure that funding for projects in California’s “bookends” was included in the final high-speed rail deal. He also fought to make sure the high-speed rail projects weren’t exempt from the Disabled Veterans Business Enterprise Program, helping disabled veterans compete for a portion of the contracting dollars that are competitively awarded through the state’s bidding process. His term end date is December 31, 2018. Compensation is $100 per diem, not to exceed $500 in one calendar month, plus actual travel expenses incurred in attending to the business of the authority. The Democrats have only themselves to blame for their losses in Orange County

Orange County’s self-appointed Latino leaders are blaming the 2011 redistricting (that added more Vietnamese voters to the First Supervisorial District while removing Latino voters) for Lou Correa’s loss to Andrew Do in the January 27 First District Special Election, according to the O.C. Register.

The truth is that the Democratic Party of Orange County’s bizarre decision to give then Supervisor Janet Nguyen a free pass in 2012 has now cost the Democrats not only the First District but also the 34th State Senate District, which Nguyen won in last year’s General Election. And the Democrats might also lose the 46th Congressional District in 2016 if Nguyen comes gunning for the incumbent, U.S. Rep. Loretta Sanchez. Continue reading→

February 3, 2015 – Pursuant to California Elections Code section 15628 the Orange County Registrar of Voters will be conducting a recount of the ballots cast in the 2015 Orange County Board of Supervisors’ First District Special Election.

Lame Lou Correa Mailer

I have read comments on Facebook by supporters of Lou Correa that are openly blaming the voters in Santa Ana for Correa’s loss to Andrew Do in the First District Special Election. That is ridiculous.

There are a lot of reasons why people might not vote. You have to know, going into a Special Election, that the turnout will be low to begin with. But Latino voters in Santa Ana already were prone to not voting – they did the same thing in November when Jose Solorio lost to Janet Nguyen in the 34th State Senate election – which led to her abandoning the First District. Correa loses by 43 votes to Do in the First District Special Election

The final votes have been tallied and apparently Andrew Do beat Lou Correa by 43 votes in the First District Special Election, according to the Orange County Registrar of Voters.

I suppose there might be a recount, but why bother? This election was lost when Correa, for whatever reason, did not attack Do. Instead Correa spent a small fortune on mailers that touted his public safety record. It was reminiscent of Jose Solorio’s failed campaign last year against Do’s old boss, Janet Nguyen, in the race for the 34th State Senate District. Continue reading→

Andrew Do’s lead over former State Senator Lou Correa, in the First District Special Election, has narrowed today to 85, according to the Orange County Registrar of Voters.

Andrew Do has widened his lead over Lou Correa, in the First District Special Election, as the Orange County Registrar of Voters continues to process the provisional ballots. Do now leads by 239 votes whereas he previously led by 2 votes.

This outcome was expected as the Viet turnout yesterday was very high while Latino voters appear to have slept through the election. Continue reading→

OC Chairman Spitzer Committed to Fair and Impartial Special Election Results

(Orange County, CA) — Results for the First District special election on the Orange County Board of Supervisors remain too close to call. The election night count showed just two votes separating top vote-getters Andrew Do (16,202) and Lou Correa (16,200) in the five-candidate race. 41,767 ballots have been counted, and there are an estimated 6,105 ballots remaining.

“As Chairman of the Board of Supervisors, I want to assure the voters of Orange County that our county government is doing everything in its power to ensure fair and impartial elections. Our Registrar of Voters, Neal Kelley, is respected throughout California for his integrity, diligence, and commitment to accurate, honest elections,” said Todd Spitzer, Chairman of the Board of Supervisors. Lou Correa losing in the First District Special Election by 2 votes

The ballots have all been counted in the First District Special Election and it appears that former State Senator Lou Correa is losing by two votes to Andrew Do, who quit the Garden Grove City Council in 2011, according to the Orange County Registrar of Voters.

Do was supported by former Supervisor Janet Nguyen and by the CA and OC GOP.

Correa had a lot of support from unions and from OC Sheriff Sandra Hutchens and OCDA Tony Rackauckas. Continue reading→
