Orange County Supervisor Shawn Nelson Joins California State Senator John Moorlach In Call to Open Fairview Developmental Center For Emergency Homeless Shelter

SANTA ANA, CA— In response to Federal Judge David O. Carter’s demand to immediately identify
a plan for emergency homeless shelters in Orange County, Orange County Supervisor Shawn Nelson is working with California State Senator John Moorlach to request he ask the State of California to take emergency action to open Fairview Developmental Center as an emergency homeless shelter.

The Fairview Developmental Center (FDC) occupies 114 acres of state-owned land and is centrally
located in Costa Mesa. The facility opened in 1959 and was originally designed to serve individuals with developmental and intellectual disabilities. Utilizing infrastructure already in place will help expedite the transition of homeless from area motels to an improved triage center while satisfying the judge’s order to present a swift, realistic plan. Care Packages Rally Set for October 26

Supervisor Shawn Nelson will help collect and donate care package items going to Kabul, Afghanistan at his “Cigars for Heroes” collection rally on October 26. Veterans, military family members and citizen-patriots are welcome to stop by and drop donations, take pictures and savor a cigar while collecting items that will be sent to active-duty military in November.

Continuing his legacy of supporting active duty military stationed overseas with a taste of freedom from appreciative family, friends and Veterans in OC, Supervisor Shawn Nelson announced today that he will host the 4 hour rally at Vintage Cigars, located at 3734 S. Bristol, Santa Ana (South Bristol at Callen Common behind the Bank of America), from 1:00-5:00pm, Sunday, October 26. Continue reading→

Orange County Bike Loop update

OC Bike Loop Update

Supervisor Nelson visited Anaheim City Hall on Tuesday, August 12 to update council members and residents about the progress on the Orange County Bicycle Loop. This 66-mile trail for commuting and recreational activities is about 70% complete with only a few remaining gaps to fill along Pacific Coast Highway and the northern portion of the county.

Closing the gaps in the OC Loop would increase connectivity, expand transportation options and enhance recreational opportunities. OCTA and other stakeholders, including local cities, are working with the County of Orange on a feasibility study to close the remaining gaps. The study will provide the cities with grant-ready information to help them secure funding. Learn more about the OC Loop and the study here.

Nguyen responds to critics of her destruction of CalOptima

Orange County Supervisor Janet Nguyen struck back at the Orange County Grand Jury this week, in an editorial published by the O.C. Register.

Nguyen claims that CalOptima, the County’s largest insurer – which provides for the health care needs of the poor, was wasting money.  In particular she referenced the purchase of a building that was bought by CalOptima and for which they are still paying a lease.  But Supervisor John Moorlach “defended the building purchase, saying the cash transaction reduced the organization’s overall occupancy costs even though it had to keep its lease at the former building,” according to the O.C. Register.

The O.C. Health Care Agency covered up an E. coli outbreak this April

“Sometime in April, nine customers at an Orange County restaurant got sick after eating lettuce laced with Escherichia coli, the deadly, dreaded bacterium better known as E. coli. The lettuce came from Amazing Coachella Inc. of Coachella, and their poisoned product also struck eaters in Canada, where the outbreak was a national story. The OC restaurant was the only other culprit; it closed for a couple of days, then opened, and that was that,” according to the OC Weekly.

Here’s the kicker – the Orange County Health Care Agency, which inspects restaurants and oversees food safety in Orange County, never “never revealed it to the public when the outbreak occurred, and it doesn’t want you to know about it—now or ever.” Continue reading→

Richardson loses his 33 percent pay hike, despite Nguyen’s support

My favorite O.C. Supervisor, Shawn Nelson, took action at today’s Board of Supervisors meeting, making a motion that a series of raises – which were doled out to just about every top executive in the CEO’s office – be rescinded, according to the Voice of OC.  The action means a demotion and rescinding of a 33 percent pay hike for Assistant CEO Rob Richardson.

Richardson is also a Trustee on the Santa Ana Unified School District’s Board of Education.  He is up for reelection next year.  He will have a heck of a time explaining to the voters in Santa Ana why he deserved a 33 percent pay hike in the first place.  He is also thought to be the one who brought disgraced Santa Ana Council Member Carlos Bustamante to the County of Orange.  Bustamante resigned a few months ago when he was charged with sexual harassment.  Bustamante was also in line to lose raises but he lost his job instead, after resigning. Supervisors Bates and Campbell vote for Nguyen’s takeover of CalOptima

“In a 3-2 vote, with supervisors Shawn Nelson and John Moorlach dissenting, the board not only approved changes that increase health care industry representation on the board but also extended a supervisor’s term on the board from one to two years. Nguyen is the supervisors’ current representative,” according to the Voice of OC.

Nelson and Moorlach ripped Nguyen and her dumb proposal to take over the CalOptima board – be sure to read the Voice of OC article for details, but Supervisors Pat Bates and Bill Campbell went along with Nguyen.

Who is Tom Daly?

I first asked the question, “Who is Tom Daly,” back in March of 2009, on the Orange Juice blog.  Now that Daly is running for the 69th Assembly District, where Jose Solorio is terming out next year, it is time once again to ponder just who this political hack is.

As you may recall, Daly ran to replace Chris Norby on the O.C. Board of Supervisors back in 2009.  But then he got cold feet and pulled out – but only after he held a couple of fundraisers and padded his campaign account.

Supervisor Nelson to Receive Legal Leaders Award

(Santa Ana) – Orange County Supervisor Shawn Nelson will be the first in this year’s series of rising government attorneys to be awarded the Whittier Law School Alumni Association’s Legal Leaders Award in appreciation of their contributions to the Orange County legal community.

The award will be presented during an event to be held Wednesday, February 23 from 12 – 1:30 p.m. at the South Coast Winery, 3608 Bristol, Santa Ana. The Whittier Law School Alumni Association’s spring Legal Leaders Series features selected government attorneys presenting information on topics of their choice. Supervisor Nelson’s topic is “The Civic Duties of an Attorney in Elected Office.”

Supervisor Nelson, a graduate of Western State University College of Law, represents the Fourth District and is the only attorney on the Board of Supervisors. He was elected to the Board of Supervisors in 2010 after having served on the Fullerton City Council since November 2002. During his time on the City Council, he served as both the Mayor of Fullerton and as Mayor Pro Tem. He is also the managing partner in the Santa Ana law firm of Rizio and Nelson and is an arbitrator for the Orange County Bar Association.
