Santa Ana Police Department Advisory: April is Distracted Driver Awareness Month

As part of April’s Distracted Driving Awareness Month campaign, the Santa Ana Police Department will be actively ticketing those texting or operating hand-held cell phones for the month of April. Drivers who break the law and place themselves and others in danger will be cited with no warnings. The current minimum ticket cost is $159, with subsequent tickets costing at least $279. In April 2012, over 57,000 tickets were written statewide for texting and hand-held cell use. There were nearly 450,000 convictions in 2012. Is the SAPD paying for crime mapping that they could get for free?

I got a tip this weekend that the Santa Ana Police Department is paying for services on a website that maps crime. Click here to check out the site, which is called “Crimemapping.com.” Their service is handy and it seems to be accurate. Click here to see one of their detailed reports (who knew that there were 318 crimes in Santa Ana in the past week?). But there is a catch- the information on the site may only be used by individuals, according to their Terms of Use. That means I cannot reproduce the information here.

The real bummer is that the SAPD could have contracted with a different company, Spotcrime.com, that performs the SAME service – at no cost! And they allow anyone to use their information. Continue reading→
