Human trafficking and domestic abuse workshop set for Jan. 11 at the Library

SANTA ANA, CA (January 2, 2014) – President Barack Obama has proclaimed January as “National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month”. On January 11th, the Santa Ana Public Library will present an information and resource workshop on Human Trafficking and Domestic Abuse.
Almost every country in the world is affected by trafficking, whether as a country of origin, transit or destination for victims. Every year, thousands of men, women and children go missing, or are subject to domestic abuse. The SAPD says they are still looking for Santa Ana’s missing women
The Santa Ana Police Department continues to seek information regarding the disappearance of three women in the Santa Ana area since August 13th. These three women – Kianna Jackson, Josephine Vargas, and Martha Anaya- all went missing during this period and two of them (Vargas and Anaya) were known to frequent the area of 1st Street, between Grand Avenue and the 55 Freeway. Jackson arrived in Orange County via bus at the Santa Ana terminal; however, she immediately checked into a motel in Costa Mesa, but then disappeared several days later. At this time, detectives cannot connect Jackson to the East 1st Street area. Continue reading
Two women reported missing in Santa Ana
Monique Vargas, a resident of Santa Ana, has been missing since Oct. 24, according to her sister in law, Heather Hernandez, who posted this message on her Facebook page:

Man caught videotaping women at Salvation Army dressing room

On 7-11-13 the Fountain Valley Police Department arrested Scott Ruvolo, 56 years of age from Victorville, after he was attempting to record women changing in the dressing room at the Salvation Army thrift store located at 16119 Brookhurst in Fountain Valley.
A search of Ruvolo’s cell phone revealed he recorded two additional unidentified female victims undressing at the same store just prior to his arrest. Other video footage indicates Ruvolo had his cell phone clipped to his belt and recorded women while walking around unknown Target stores and Starbucks. This occurred between June of 2013 to July of 2013. Continue reading
Updated: Dirty Little Secrets Burlesque at The Copper Door starting on 11/6
UPDATED: Sources at City Hall have advised that the burlesque show set for Nov. 6, 2013, likely will not happen as The Copper Door has not yet acquired an Enertainment Permit that will allow them to proceed. I am told that the SAPD will shut down this event if they have to. Burlesque is allowed in Santa Ana if it doesn’t violate the adult entertainment ordinance, which prohibits the exposure of specific body parts.

Minority women donors sought for Healthy Breast Tissue Collection
When Jane Ka’ala Pang learned she could donate a small amount of her healthy breast tissue to support groundbreaking breast cancer research, she immediately said “yes!” Earlier this year, Ka’ala Pang, along with Angela Acevedo and Charlene Kazner, traveled to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Tissue Bank at Indiana University Simon Cancer Center as Orange County representatives to donate their healthy tissue.
Now, the three women are working with Komen Orange County to raise awareness and encourage participation for the first-ever West Coast healthy breast tissue collection on Nov. 2 – to be held right here in Orange County. The goal of the event is to collect 150 samples from women of Asian American, Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander, African American and Latina descent, in an effort to fuel global breast cancer research. SANTA ANA – Charges have been filed against two men for pimping and pandering of two female victims, ages 18 and 19 years old, after being stopped by undercover Santa Ana Police Department (SAPD) officers. Raphael Jared Scally, 27, Hesperia, and Darryl Da Keis Gillard, 27, Hemet, are both charged with two felony counts of pimping and two felony counts of pandering with the sentencing enhancement for crime-bail-crime, indicating that the defendants were out of custody on bail for another felony (2010 residential burglary case) at the time of the crime. If convicted, both defendants face a maximum sentence of nine years and four months in state prison. Gillard is out of custody on bail and his arraignment is to be determined. The People will be requesting $250,000 bail at Scally’s arraignment today, Monday, June 17, 2013, in Department CJ-1, Central Jail, Santa Ana. The time is to be determined. Continue reading

Orange County is a diverse melting-pot with a large ethnic population, multiple tourist attractions, and is surrounded by large, urban counties, which has made it susceptible to human traffickers. Human trafficking cases have recently increased in Orange County, with many cases involving underage victims and/or brothels. The new Unit was created to deal with this increasing problem.
