More than 400 Santa Ana Unified School District Students to Receive Free Eye Exams and New Glasses for KIDS VISION DAYS – April 11 and April 12, 2013

Santa Ana (April 10, 2013) – Students attending Heninger Elementary School and Santa Ana High School will receive eye exams and new glasses free of charge thanks to a collaboration among The Alcon Foundation, Essilor Vision Foundation, Southern California College of Optometry, RAM (Remote Area Medical) and CHIOC (Children’s Health Initiative of Orange County) on Thursday, April 11 and Friday, April.12, 2013, from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Santa Ana High School, located at 520 West Walnut Street, Santa Ana, California 92701. Santa Ana, CA — April 6, 2013 recognized as Kiwanis One Day–a global action day benefiting children and communities The Kiwanis Club of Santa Ana is bringing the spirit of service alive in the City of Santa Ana by hosting a full day of service activities which include but not limited to painting the iron fence surrounding our Kiwanis Barrier Free Park and making lei’s, get well cards, origami cranes to donate to local hospitals on April 6, 2013.

The painting and table service projects will take place at Kiwanis Barrier Free Park located in the north side of Thornton Park 1801 Segerstrom Ave. Santa Ana CA 92704 at 8:00am to 4:00pm. OCDA AND OC GRIP KICK OFF SPRING WITH 10TH ANNUAL SOCCER CAMP TO ENCOURAGE HEALTHY AND POSITIVE CHOICES FOR STUDENTS

SANTA ANA – The Orange County District Attorney’s Office (OCDA) and the Orange County Gang Reduction and Intervention Partnership (OC GRIP) will be hosting the 10th Annual Spring Youth Soccer Camp (SYSC) next week for elementary school students. OCDA’s SYSC is an ongoing gang prevention effort to build self-esteem and encourage healthy and positive choices for young students. The 3-day spring break soccer clinic begins on Monday, April 1, 2013, at 8:00 a.m. and concludes on Wednesday, April 3, 2013. The program will be held at Centennial Regional Park located at 3000 West Edinger Avenue, Santa Ana, and Carl E. Gilbert Elementary School located at 7255 8th Street, Buena Park, and will include students from Davis Elementary, Kennedy Elementary, John Adams Elementary, Diamond Elementary, Carl E. City of Santa Ana, Downtown Orange County Community Advisory: Santa Ana Teens Go Beneath the Surface in 2nd Annual Teen Video Challenge

The participants of the Workforce Investment Act (WIA) grant project from the Santa Ana Public Library have just been announced as this year’s Teen Video Challenge winners. The group of seventeen dedicated teens worked tirelessly for weeks to come up with original lyrics, film, edit, produce music, and prepare the final product.

The Teen Video Challenge is a statewide competition, put on by the Collaborative Summer Library Program (CSLP) inviting California youth to create promotional, engaging videos that are within the theme of the Summer Reading Program. This year’s video challenge theme is “Beneath the Surface”. After a week of voting on YouTube, the youth from Santa Ana beat out contestants from libraries all across California. The WIA group will be awarded $275 for their achievement and they will celebrate their success together with a trip this Summer. Continue reading→

Event: Students and teachers will BRAVE the SHAVE and go BALD during their Fourth Annual St. Baldrick’s Foundation Fundraising event.

The St. Baldrick’s Foundation sponsors head-shaving events around the world by asking the simple question: How much money would you donate to conquer kids’ cancers to see me shave my head? Volunteer barbers donate their time and participants raise funds and then sit back and have their heads shaved in solidarity with kids who have been diagnosed with cancer. The money raised goes towards grants given to doctors and scientists who are dedicated to finding cures and treatments for infants, children, and young adults who have been diagnosed with cancer. Northeast Santa Ana’s Little League had their Opening Day Ceremony on Saturday, March 9, 2013.  Check out the pictures of the event above.

Thanks to the CHP Community Outreach officer who visited the event and threw out the first pitch and to the Santa Ana ROTC Marching Band members who participated and Minister Gus Lujan, who gave the invocation. Thanks also to the volunteer who sang the National Anthem.   Continue reading→

NESALL Opening Day Ceremony set for Saturday, March 9

Weather permitting the historic Northeast Santa Ana Little League is holding their Opening Day Ceremony this Saturday, March 9, starting at 8:30 am , aver at NESALL Field, located next to Sierra Intermediate School, at 2201 N. Grand Ave..

Games will start at 10:30 am.  Click here to see the full schedule.  The Snack Bar will be open throughout the day – with the usual Little League fare – hot dogs, nachos and fries, plus other snacks and cold drinks.

The Opening Day Ceremony will include members of the Santa Ana High School ROTC’s marching band; Minister Gustavo Lujan; and perhaps a special surprise or two, plus the teams will be showing off their awesome team banners! Continue reading→

Southwest Santa Ana Little League is celebrating their Opening Day this Saturday, March 2, from 10 am to 12 noon, at Memorial Park, which is located on Flower and Saint Gertrude.

Following the Opening Day ceremonies will be a fun game pitting the Coaches against the Southwest Santa Ana Little League’s Board Members.  Great food will be cooking at their awesome Snack Bar all day long.

“Boys in Peril” to screen at Valley High School on March 22

The groundbreaking documentary film “Boys in Peril” will be screened at Santa Ana’s Valley High School on March 22, 2013.

This film is an effort to better understand the dwindling college-bound American population, by Los Angeles filmmaker Graham Streeter, who  embedded himself in East Los Angeles, where he befriended Julio, Edgar, and Abel: three Latino high school seniors;  each attempting to navigate through the daunting and challenging transition between high school and college in their own unique ways.
