The owner of a local Ecology Summer Day Camp is offering a limited number of scholarships and discounts for the 2012 program near the border of Santa Ana and Orange.
Students in the camp—open to ages 6-14—will learn the fundamentals of environmental science as they explore habitat of the Santiago Park Nature Reserve (on Memory Lane, between La Veta and Main streets). Topics covered will include: introduction to the local native ecosystem; basic scientific and ecological principles; examination of microscopic organisms in the park and its creek; conservation importance (energy, water, resources); and reasons and ways to avoid pollution while protecting the environment. ORANGE COUNTY – In an ongoing effort to keep children out of gangs, the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim (Angels) will open their gates Monday, June 4, 2012, for the fourth consecutive year to over 1,200 at-risk students as a reward for improved behavior and for staying out of gangs. Three High School Inc. Students Win at National Culinary Competition
High School Inc., workforce development students put skills to the test
SANTA ANA – Ashley Blanco, Alejandro Hernandez and Ivan Lopez, senior Culinary Arts and Hospitality students in the High School Inc. Academies at Valley High School, were first-place winners in a recent competition in Washington, D.C. The team cooked a healthy meal that teens across American have indicated they would like to eat at their school cafeteria.
This was part of a national organization that promotes healthy eating in schools to lower childhood obesity that is prevalent in the poor neighborhoods of Santa Ana and others across the nation. The Santa Ana Chamber of Commerce began its High School Inc. program five years ago in an effort to build a stronger economic base by empowering youth to train for careers before they graduate from high school. Jonathan Espinoza, a senior at Segerstrom High School student in Santa Ana, Calif., thanks to Simon Scholars, has received a full scholarship to attend Georgetown University beginning in the fall of 2012.
Espinoza joined the New Port, Calif., based Simon Scholars program during his junior year. Founded by Ron Simon in 2003, the program emphasizes both strong academic performance and personal interaction with students to help them develop the self-confidence, self-esteem and academic advancement to succeed as the next generation of leaders. ORANGE COUNTY DISTRICT ATTORNEY APPLAUDS SANTA ANA FOR EXPANDING LAW TO KEEP REGISTERED SEX OFFENDERS
OUT OF CITY PARKS AND PLAYGROUNDS
SANTA ANA – The City of Santa Ana enacted a law yesterday to expand child safety zones to protect children from registered sex offenders in city parks, playgrounds, and other children’s facilities after a first reading of the ordinance. The Santa Ana City Council voted unanimously to pass the ordinance yesterday, May 21, 2012. There will be a second reading of the Ordinance June 4, 2012. The Ordinance becomes effective 30 days after the second reading. The ordinance incorporated many of the County’s Sex Offender Ordinance to their existing Child Safety Ordinance. The City Council includes Mayor Miguel Pulido, Mayor pro tem Claudia Alvarez, Council Members David Benavides, Carlos Bustamante, Michele Martinez, Vincent Sarmiento, and Sal Tinajero.
