Benavides Hatergate: The missing Independence Day video emerges

I met last night with Naui Huitzilopochtli and he graciously allowed me to borrow his video clips of the footage he shot at the Santa Ana Independence Day event on July 3, that was taken over by the Minuteman.

Naui said that he saw Republican volunteers registering voters.  He approached them just as they were trying to connive a woman into registering as one of them.  When he saw this he quickly asked her if she really wanted to be a Republican.  Oh no, she replied, I am a Democrat.  Naui wasn’t sure how many voters were fraudulently registered that day.

In the video you will see that Anita Hynds, a Minuteman, immediately started screeching at Naui to go away, even though he wasn’t doing anything wrong.

You will also see Santa Ana Councilman David Benavides literally bowing to Lupe Moreno, as she gives him instructions.

And another Minuteman takes the time to explain to Naui that Moreno needed his help to explain to the kids what the 4th of July is all about as all they know about is Cinco de Mayo.

The video also includes a priceless moment with former SAUSD Trustee Rosie Avila, who now says she wants kids to learn four languages.  Sure Rosie.

This missing footage really fills in the blanks and it makes it clear that we should NEVER let Moreno run any other events in Santa Ana.

Santa Ana Pacific Electric Bike Ride and Festival on Saturday, July 24

The City of Santa Ana is hosting the Pacific Electric Bike Ride and Festival, on Saturday, July 24, from 10 am -2 pm, with two bike rides starting at Thornton Park and Monroe School and ending at McFadden and Orange Ave.

For those of you who don’t want to ride, the festival will begin at 11 am on Mcfadden and Orange at the Pacific Electric Bike Trail. The festival will include lunch, entertainment, give aways, booths and much more.

Santa Ana Kiwanis Foundation hosting gala benefit on August 14

Please join us in supporting the Santa Ana Kiwanis Foundation’s 12th annual fundraising live and silent auction that helps make a difference in the lives of children in our community, by supplying an auction item for this fun-filled annual event. The STRIKE GOLD FOR KIDS GALA dinner and auction is being held on Saturday, August 14, 2010, at 6:00 p.m. at the delightful Hilton Hotel in Costa Mesa. This Gala is Kiwanis of Santa Ana’s main way of raising funds for the support of our many community service projects, including:

  • Providing approximately $45,000.00 annually for college scholarships.
  • Improving the Children’s Barrier Free Park and Sports Court for the Handicapped
  • Assisting handicapped children at Bowling Tournaments
  • Helping at the Carl Harvey School Carnival, Christmas Tree Decorating, and other special events.

Dr. Michael Riley appointed new O.C. Social Services Agency Director

New Social Services Agency Director Appointed

(Santa Ana, CA) — The Orange County Board of Supervisors has appointed Dr. Michael Riley to serve as Director of the County’s Social Services Agency (SSA) effective July 30, 2010.

He will succeed Ingrid Harita, who has served as SSA’s Director since July 2005 and is retiring from the County on July 29. Dr. Riley, who joined SSA in 1997, is currently the Agency’s Chief Deputy Director and served previously as the Director of Children and Family Services.

“Dr. Riley’s knowledge of the Social Services Agency, his experience and his true concern for those in need are among his greatest qualifications,” said Supervisor Janet Nguyen, Chair of the Orange County Board of Supervisors. “The Board looks forward to working with Dr. Riley and his staff as we continue our efforts to meet the needs of individuals and families.”

Dr. Riley received his Bachelor of Science, Master of Science and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Nebraska. He is a recognized leader in children’s welfare and has received numerous professional appointments and awards. Dr. Riley is also a graduate of the Orange County Leadership Academy.

The Orange County Social Services Agency serves over 380,000 clients monthly, from newborns to the elderly. Services provided by SSA impact the health, safety and well-being of children, disabled adults, seniors and families.

Taller San Jose looking for volunteers for Light up a Life 2010

Taller San Jose, is an innovative Santa Ana program that walks young people out of poverty by offering the hope of a productive and self-reliant future.

They are presenting their “Light up a Life 2010” fundraiser on September 18, from 2:00pm – 11:00pm, at Mission San Juan Capistrano, located at 26801 Ortega Hwy., in San Juan Capistrano.

Taller San Jose is looking for 100 volunteers to help set up the event, greet guests, sell opportunity drawing tickets, faciliate the auction, and much more.

Does Mayoral candidate Amezcua realize there is more than one school district in Santa Ana?

Fellow Orange Juice blogger Art Pedroza recently wrote a post regarding Mayoral candidate Alfredo Amezcua’s misplaced criticism of our Mayor Miguel Pulido not helping the youth of Santa Ana.  As Pedroza correctly pointed out under the leadership of Mayor Pulido and councilmembers Claudia Alvarez, Sal Tinajero, Vince Sarmiento and Michele Martinez the city has put in place a number of programs to serve our youth.

According to a posting on Mr. Amezcua’s Facebook page he said the following:

We are exchanging ideas wit voters concerned that the current mayor isn’t working with the school district to create greater opportunity for our youth.

In reading this it gives the impression that there is only one school district in Santa Ana and that Mr. Amezcua is only concerned about working with them.  The reality is that there are four school districts that service the residents of Santa Ana:  Santa Ana Unified, Garden Grove Unified, Orange Unified and Tustin Unified.

Clearly the school district that Amezcua is referring to would be the Santa Ana Unified School District.  My question to Mr. Amezcua and his campaign would be, are you aware that we have other districts serving our city and are you interested in fostering relationships with them as well?  Or do you only want to concern yourself with the SAUSD?

As a resident of Santa Ana and the Garden Grove Unified School District I want to be sure that those of us living outside the SAUSD boundries are not disenfranchised and that our tax dollars are not going only to the SAUSD.  Mayor Pulido has built relationships with all these districts over his years in office and I would like to see those relationships grow and prosper.

First and foremost though I want a mayor that is focused on city issues and not one that is overly concerned with school district issues.  We elect a school board to do that.  Perhaps Mr. Amezcua can focus his energies on electing a stronger school board and ridding us of those members that continue to do a poor job.

However if Mr. Amezcua is determined to stay in the race for Mayor of Santa Ana  he should start sharing with us his goals to help with the budget issues we are facing and important topics like that and leave the issues of our schools to the elected officials that are supposed to oversee them.

Amezcua says Pulido isn’t helping our youth – but is that really true?

Santa Ana Mayoral candidate Alfredo Amezcua finally offered a glimpse at one of his campaign ideas, with this comment that was posted today on Facebook ( I am posting it verbatim):

We are exchanging ideas wit voters concerned that the current mayor isn’t working with the school district to create greater opportunity for our youth.

What the heck is he talking about?  Why is Amezcua attacking Santa Ana Mayor Miguel Pulido on education of all things?

Don’t forget that Amezcua QUIT the Rancho Santiago Community College District’s Board of Education.  And, as we exposed here, it is likely that he quit because he broke the law by running for the RSCCD’s Area 1 even though he really lived in Area 3.

Our city is struggling to find ways to close our massive budget hole, and Amezcua now wants Pulido to expand his duties to include education?

And what does Amezcua mean by “greater opportunity for youth?”

The reality is that even though our city is broke, good things have indeed been happening that have had a positive impact on our youth.

Let’s take a walk through our city’s website and annotate some of these accomplishments:

  • The City has invested heavily in our community centers.  Click here to see a list of them.  Our community centers are currently hosting dozens of summer programs that you can read about by clicking here.  The Jerome Center was recently renovated.  You can read about the renovation by clicking here.  Our Parks and Rec Agency Director, Gerardo Mouet, took over control of our soccer fields and now youth have even more access to them.  Click here to read about that.  The Santa Ana Parks and Recreation Department is also offering a pretty amazing array of  “leisure classes.”  Click here to learn more about those.  And Mouet followed my advice and changed the Santa Ana Zoo’s free day to the third Sunday of the month.  Hundreds of Santa Ana’s kids got to see the Zoo for free today!  Click here to read about that.
  • How about our Public Libraries?  Mouet has acted swiftly to expand our library services since he took over management of our libraries.  Click here to see their new website.  Note that American History ebooks are now available for FREE to our residents.  Mouet also added an extensive online selection of books about animals.  And he added a virtual reference library!  Services also now include online book clubs!  And Mouet is offering a slew of summer programs that you can read about by clicking here.  Our libraries are also offering free computer workshops for kids, starting in August.  Click here to read about that.
  • And while the City has cut back on some City Commissions, the Youth Commission is still active.  Click here to read about that.
  • Did you know that the Santa Ana Police Department offers dozens of FREE programs, many of them youth-oriented?  Click here to read about them.  The Santa Ana Police Athletic League also has a vast summer activity program that you can read about by clicking here.
  • Our City also promotes events all over town on their Community Calendar, that you can access by clicking here.

So is Pulido guilty of not offering enough “opportunities for youth?”  Not that I can tell.  If anything, Amezcua is guilty of slinging empty political B.S.  That is becoming the hallmark of his campaign.  It is most disturbing.

The City of Santa Ana has changed their Santa Ana Zoo free day, after much pleading, to the third Sunday of the month.  This month they will honor the previous free day, which is coming up this Tuesday, but will also offer a free day on Sunday, July 18.  These free days are for residents of Santa Ana.

This is great news for Santa Ana’s working families.  I have pointed out for some time the fact that holding the free day on a Tuesday, when the Zoo closes at 5 pm, was a poor policy as it prevented many families in town from enjoying this benefit.  Now they will be able to visit on a Sunday, when many residents have the day off, instead.

I would like to thank Santa Ana’s Parks and Recreation Agency Director Gerardo Mouet for making this happen.  Credit should also be extend to our city administration and to our City Council.  And I would be remiss if I did not mention Kent Yamaguchi, the Zoo Director, who has worked with Mouet to implement this much-needed change.

Mouet has had a heck of a time the past two years trying to slash his budget while still improving services.  I think he has succeeded for the most part.

I am hearing rumors that the City of Santa Ana might move to set up the Zoo as a private enterprise, via a foundation.  The Zoo is already effectively run by a non-profit, the Friends of the Santa Ana Zoo.  Most likely they would continue to operate the Zoo, acting as a managing foundation.

The Friends of the Zoo do a fine job.  I am concerned about their lack of diversity, but they do put together a lot of programs that reach out to our diverse communities.  Long term I hope that they do move to add more ethnic minorities to their board of directors.  Currently they have only one Latino on their board and maybe one Asian.  All of their executive officers are white males, except for woman.

Angels join Pulido and Correa in renovating the Santa Ana Boys & Girls Club

Santa Ana Mayor Miguel Pulido and State Senator Lou Correa welcomed the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim and their owner, Arte Moreno, just before this week’s MLB All-Star Game, to help renovate the Santa Ana Boys & Girls Club.  Here are a few excerpts from a post on the Angel’s website about this wonderful charitable effort:

Hours before the 81st MLB All-Star Game on Tuesday at Angel Stadium, Major League Baseball, the Angels and the city of Santa Ana put the finishing touches on the renovations of the Boys & Girls Club of Santa Ana, as part of the festivities of 2010 MLB All-Star Week.

It was a fun day for all involved, and major renovations were made to the club, including a newly constructed baseball and softball field, a baseball-themed mural on the field’s outer edges, the planting of an organic/peace garden, renovations to a multi-purpose room and various other activities on the grounds and facility.

It was all part of MLB’s “Going Beyond” initiative, which is expected to raise $5 million for local and national charities as part of MLB’s All-Star Week in Anaheim and the surrounding areas. And it couldn’t have been done without the help of the Angels and the Angels Baseball Foundation, which was created by Angels owner Arte Moreno in 2004.

The Boys & Girls Club of Santa Ana has a big impact in the community, as it has impacted more than 70,000 lives since 1954, and serves approximately 900 youth from Santa Ana daily.

Orange County High School for the Arts buys the OC Pavilion, in Santa Ana

The Orange County High School of the Arts (OCHSA) has finalized an agreement with developer Mike Harrah to buy the OC Pavilion, Harrah’s Santa Ana restaurant and entertainment complex, for $13 million, according to the O.C. Register.

“The expansion will increase OCHSA’s sprawling campus by almost 25 percent, from about 160,000 to 210,000 square feet. But Dr. Ralph Opacic, the school’s founder and president, is more excited about the facilities the new building will provide, especially a proscenium-style theater with more than 500 seats.”

OCHSA also reported earlier this month that “A team of Beckman Coulter employees has adopted the Orange County High School of the Arts (OCHSA) Symphony Hall as a summer community project teambuilding event. Built in 1922, Symphony Hall currently houses more than 75 student productions and events each year. Beckman Coulter employees will donate their time and join together with volunteers from OCHSA to enhance the theatre’s exterior by making necessary cosmetic improvements. The team’s first priority is to patch and paint the window frames outside of Symphony Hall.”

OCHSA provides a link to the O.C. Register story on their website, but no further news about the purchase of the OC Pavilion.

The O.C. Register also reported yesterday that the “Fine-dining French bistro Ambrosia Restaurant, inside the OC Pavilion in Santa Ana, announced plans to close at the end of the month.”

The Ambrosia sent this email to their customers:

“For 5 Years Ambrosia Restaurant has had the privilege of serving Orange County unforgettable meals & memories. We must close our doors soon, on Saturday, July 31st, but we look forward to serving you at a new location in the future. Wine, Beer & Cocktails are 50% off all month and Bottles of Wine will be available for Purchase 50% Off as well.

Thank you for your patronage and we hope to see you during our last days at The OC Pavilion.  Au revoir et a bientot!”

There is no further news about this move on Ambrosia’s website.

Is Harrah having money problems – or just being civic-minded?  As usual it is hard to say.  But kudos to the folks at OCHSA for making this move to really expand their campus and their ability to showcase their student performers.

As for Ambrosia, I always thought they were an odd fit for our city – too expensive for most folks in town.  Good luck to them at their new location.

Protest next year’s MLB All Star Game in Arizona, today at the Anaheim Stadium

The 2010 Major League Baseball All Star Game arrives with much fanfare today in Anaheim, where Boston Red Sox slugger David Ortiz won the Home Run Derby yesterday.

I expect that some of Orange County’s wealthiest elite will be there, along with folks who bought season tickets and a lot of out of town visitors.  There will also be protesters there.

Activists will be there today to protest next year’s MLB All Star Game, which is scheduled to be in Phoenix, Arizona, home of the dreadful SB 1070 racial profiling law.

MLB Commissioner Bud Selig predictably issued a statement indicating that MLB has no intention of moving the game elsewhere.  However, many of his own players and managers disagree with that notion.

Summer art classes at MC Art Studio, at the Santora in Santa Ana

Have fun and learn the fundamentals of art at the MC Art Studio, located at 207 N. Broadway, in Santa Ana.  They have art classes for beginners and non beginners every Monday and Wednesday at 6pm through September 15.  You can sign up by clicking here.  Or click here to RSVP on Facebook.

Monday 6 pm: the class is focus on students with no previous background on art.  Starts with a few exercises with pencil, charcoal and acrylics to developing the basic skills on drawing and coloring.

Basic subjects:

  • Light and shade
  • Volume
  • Primary colors.

No beginners class: Wednesday 6 pm

Inspired on the theory of a Emotional Intelligence, this class is focus on students with some background on art, we combine the elements of a traditional class with a innovative and dynamics exercises like drawing with left hand and simplifying the shape of a model with geometric forms.

This class request at least 15 years old students.

The class are $20 per student.  Two hours with 10 ms. break.
