SAUSD’s first annual wheelchair tennis event is set for 9/9

SAUSD First Annual Wheelchair Tennis Event set for Friday, September 9, 2016

More than 200 students from Santa Ana Unified School District (SAUSD) will participate in the First Annual SAUSD Wheelchair Tennis Event to be held at Mc Fadden Intermediate School on Friday, September 9, 2016. The matches will begin at 11:00 a.m. and end by 3:00 p.m.

The event is sponsored by Kiwanis Club of Santa Ana in conjunction with SAUSD, First Serve Santa Ana, and the United States Tennis Association. The purpose of the event is to demonstrate to all parties that athletes with disabilities can play the great game of tennis and have fun. The immediate goal of this event is to “Build Confident Kids Through the Game of Tennis”. Continue reading→

Anaheim is on to FootGolf, why is Santa Ana asleep at the wheel?

Anaheim added the new sport of FootGolf to their Mtz, at the Dad Miller Golf Course in May, and it has since then generated $7,000 from fees. Officials expect revenues to increase to $25,000 next year, according to the O.C. Register.

What exactly is footgolf? FootGolf is a combination of the popular sports of soccer and golf. The game is played with a regulation #5 soccer ball at a golf course facility on shortened holes with 21-inch diameter cups. The rules largely correspond to the rules of golf.

OCDA HOSTS 17TH ANNUAL SUMMER YOUTH EDUCATION CONFERENCE FOR STUDENTS INTERESTED IN LAW ENFORCEMENT

SANTA ANA, Calif. – Local high school students will have the opportunity this week to get a behind-the-scenes look at what it’s like to be a prosecutor, defense attorney, police detective, and judge during the 17th annual Summer Youth Education Conference. This weeklong program began today and will include 35 to 40 hours of hands-on activities, culminating in a mock trial and a graduation ceremony on Friday, Aug. 12, 2016.

“This program is a great way for young people in our community to learn about the criminal justice system,” said District Attorney Tony Rackauckas. “Some of these students will one day serve our community as the next generation of prosecutors, police officers, and judges.” Continue reading→

Troubled youth in Santa Ana can get help from the OC Bar Foundation’s Shortstop program

If you have a troubled young person in your life there is a way to help them here in Santa Ana called Shortstop.  Shortstop is a unique juvenile crime diversion program that has served juvenile offenders and their families since 1980. In 1989, Programa Shortstop was developed as a cultural adaption Spanish language version of Shorstop.

As a cost-effective, comprehensive alternative to prosecution, Shortstop utilizes effective, science-based models for reducing delinquency among youth. The program incorporates a strong restorative justice plan, which makes for a highly effective diversion program. Shortstop teaches youth offenders to take responsibility for their actions through decision-making strategies designed to result in positive future choices. Continue reading→

The Friends of Santa Ana Zoo (FOSAZ), a non-profit organization, is pleased to announce its 24th annual Zoofari “Year of the Monkey” gala fundraising event. Tickets to this exclusive black-tie, fundraising gala under the stars are $300 each. Private tables for 10 are available for $3,000 each. Space is limited. As a Member Agency of the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California our local Santa Ana schools are asked to participate in their Southern California wide poster contest. Out of over 700 entries from all over Southern California the City of Santa Ana had two winners, a very great accomplishment.

Congratulations to 6th graders Faith Avila and Michael Miramontes, winners of this year’s “Water Is Life” Student Art Contest! Faith and Michael were honored by the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California and their art work will be displayed on MWD’s 2016 calendar. Free meals for all local kids at SAUSD schools this summer

FREE MEALS FOR CHILDREN IN SANTA ANA THIS SUMMER!

The Nutrition Services Department in Santa Ana Unified School District is pleased to announce that we will be participating in the Seamless Summer Feeding Option; serving free summer meals to children in the community!

We have 54 school sites and 7 Parks and Recreation Centers participating across the district. The federally-funded program operates Monday through Friday for breakfast (except Parks and Recreation Centers) and lunch. The program is open to all children in the community from 1-18 years, no income requirement or registration is necessary. Continue reading→

The Delhi Center will host a Summer Enrichment Day Camp from June 20 to Aug. 18

The Delhi Center, in partnership with Active Learning and MASA, is hosting a Summer Enrichment Day Camp in English and Spanish from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on June 20 through August 18, 2016. This day camp is for children from ages 6 to 13. Lunch and snacks will be provided daily.

The summer day camp will include visual and performing arts classes, media arts training, and an end of summer talent show.

Participants will learn interviewing and storytelling techniques and will explore the arts, culture and the use of mixed media to create a film to showcase the rich history of their lives and their community. Continue reading→

Spend a warm sunny afternoon enjoying the musical sounds from our talented students at the first SAUSD Musical Festival, to be held May 21, 2016, at Memorial Park from 2:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. Memorial Park is located at Flower and Anahurst, in Santa Ana.

This is a free event open to all residents of Santa Ana. It will be a day to relax, enjoy a picnic, and listen to some of the best musical groups in the Santa Ana Unified School District.
