National Medal for Museum and Library Service Recognizes the Santa Ana Public Library’s Community Contributions

SANTA ANA, CALIFORNIA (April 19, 2016) – The Institute of Museum and Library Services today announced the Santa Ana Public Library of Santa Ana, California, as one of 10 recipients of the 2016 National Medal for Museum and Library Service, the nation’s highest honor given to museums and libraries for service to the community. For 22 years, the award has celebrated institutions that respond to societal needs in innovative ways, making a difference for individuals, families, and their communities. The award will be presented at an event in Washington, D.C., on June 1.

The Santa Ana Public Library has been in service to the City of Santa Ana for 125 years and currently serves 335,264 residents, 79 percent of which are Latinos and 10 percent Asian. Fifty percent of the children enrolled in the local schools are first-generation English learners. Through programming that touches all age groups and demographics, the library’s goal is to improve the community’s collective life. Addressing the needs of the young immigrant families in the community, the library focuses on special programs to mentor youth, families and others to help them bridge the digital divide. OneOC to host several Earth Day events in Santa Ana this Friday

Here are a few projects organized by nonprofit OneOC going on this Friday for Earth Day:

OneOC “Spirit of Giving-Environmental Literacy” – Countywide 8:30 a.m.-10:00 a.m.

Education (Service-Leaning) – Spirit of Giving empowers Title-1 first-grade students to improve literacy skills while teaching them how they can make a difference in their communities, regardless of their personal circumstances. Volunteers will assist first grade teachers, reading and reflecting with students on environmental topics as well as present each child with a book for their personal library.

  • Lincoln Elementary – Santa Ana 9:00 a.m. State Farm volunteers

Bowers Museum’s Kidseum debuts interactive exhibit featuring seven folk tales from around the world

Santa Ana, California (April 15, 2016) – Kidseum, Santa Ana’s children’s museum and learning center by Bowers Museum, welcomes its newest experiential exhibit, Once Upon A Time, on April 16. The display offers a unique and educational approach to learning seven different fairy tales throughout history and from around the world.

Best suited for ages 2-10, visitors will experience stories through playing instruments, climbing and crawling while listening to the cultural impact and history of each tale. The fairy tales include Anansi and the Talking Melon, Beauty and the Beast, Cinderella, The Elves and the Shoemaker, Jack and the Beanstalk, Lon Po Po and Thumbelina. Continue reading→

Community: SANTA ANA CELEBRATES CHILDREN’S & BOOK DAY / SANTA ANA CELEBRA DÍA DE LOS NIÑOS & LIBROS

On April 23, 2016, Santa Ana Public Library, finalist for the 2016 National Medal for Museum and Library Services, will celebrate Día de los Niños / Día de los Libros (Children’s Day/Book Day). The celebration, also known as Día, will take place at the Main Library on Saturday, April 23, 2016 from 10:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The event will showcase a variety of fun-filled activities and services for children and their families.

Children’s Day began in 1925 and was designated as a day to bring attention to the importance and well-being of children. In 1996, nationally acclaimed children’s book author Pat Mora proposed linking the celebration of childhood and children with literacy, thus the creation of Día. Día annually celebrates children, families, and literacy for children of all linguistic and cultural backgrounds. Continue reading→

Día del Niño Celebration in Santa Ana set for Saturday April 16th

A Day For The Children Includes Free Food and Resources

SANTA ANA, CA (April 8, 2016) – Healthy kids make for a healthy community. On Saturday April 16th, from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m., KidWorks will host a Día del Niño celebration in partnership with other local non-profits, community leaders and educators. The event will be located between the 1900 and 2200 blocks of Myrtle Street. That Saturday marks the culmination of the Week of the Young Child, which has been celebrated across the nation for over four decades.

“Since 1993, KidWorks of Santa Ana has known that when kids are healthy the community is healthy,” said David Benavides, KidWorks executive director and a Santa Ana city councilman. “Day in, day out, it is the mission of KidWorks to provide all of the tools necessary for at-risk children to grow up and prosper and find their own unique identity.” Continue reading→

The City of Santa Ana’s Parks, Recreation and Community Services Agency Youth Sports Program is proud to be a host site for the 2016 Pitch, Hit & Run competition. The Pitch, Hit & Run is the official youth skills competition of Major League Baseball (MLB). This grassroots program is designed to provide youngsters with an opportunity to participate; free of charge, in a competition that recognizes individual excellence in core baseball/softball skills.

Community: Santa Ana Public Library to Host Workshop Featuring Noted Expert on Reaching Teens, Dr. Kenneth Ginsburg, M.D.

The Santa Ana Public Library has announced that it will be holding a summit meeting for organizations and agencies serving youth in Santa Ana. Titled Resilient Youth, Resilient Community, the summit will bring together youth serving organizations to explore the importance of cultivating emotional strength and self-esteem in the teens and young adults. The summit will be held at the Santa Ana Public Library on April 8, 2016 from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm.

For many years, Santa Ana Public Library has dedicated itself to using creative library programs to serve a community with few resources and many challenges. This summit is in the tradition of service the library has created, providing programs that motivate the community to improve itself. The summit will share with youth service providers how to nurture teens’ essential characteristics and help them come together in a community of caring for our teens and young adults. Santa Ana USD children to shave their heads to conquer childhood cancers!

Students and teachers will BRAVE the SHAVE and go BALD during their Fifth Annual St. Baldrick’s Foundation Fundraising event on Tuesday, March 15, 2016 at 8:30 a.m, at Carr Intermediate School, located at 2120 W. Edinger Ave., in Santa Ana.

The St. Baldrick’s Foundation sponsors head-shaving events around the world by asking the simple question: How much money would you donate to conquer kids’ cancers to see me shave my head? Volunteer barbers donate their time and participants raise funds and then sit back and have their heads shaved in solidarity with kids who have been diagnosed with cancer. The money raised goes towards grants given to doctors and scientists who are dedicated to finding cures and treatments for infants, children, and young adults who have been diagnosed with cancer. Sports Foundation to Distribute Brand New Running Shoes for Students in the Santa Ana Unified School District as part of the RunStrong program to promote a healthier lifestyle

(March 7, 2016) – When students didn’t have proper shoes to compete in 5k and 10k races, but they would still be just as eager to participate in whatever they could afford, the Kevin Armstrong MD Memorial Sports Foundation knew that they had to find a way to provide running shoes to all the students who participated in their program – RunStrong – a program that instills a love of running in intermediate-age students while promoting living a healthy lifestyle.

“We made a commitment to invest in their success as a runner and to inspire them to continue to run and make fitness a part of their overall healthier lifestyle. The students are excited, appreciative, and overjoyed that we make such an investment in them. Give a kid a new pair of shoes, and they immediately feel more hopeful and optimistic no matter what their environment around them looks like,” said Karen Armstrong, the sister of the late Kevin Armstrong MD, and Vice President of the Foundation. Community: This weekend: Santa Ana Zoo’s 64th Birthday Celebration

The Santa Ana Zoo, “Home of the 50 Monkeys,” will hosts its 64th wild animal birthday celebration this Saturday, March 5th and Sunday, March 6th, 2016 on the Zoo grounds from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm. Live music and entertainment are included in the cost of general admission.

Throughout the event, children and adults will enjoy miniature train displays by Del Oro Pacific, singing happy birthday, dancing on the lawn, and visiting with the Zoo’s enchanting and playful animals, which now includes a baby anteater, a baby howler monkey, a baby ocelot and a baby sloth. The marvelous Ballet Folkloric will perform and SAZOO, the Zoo’s resident monkey mascot and honorary OC celebrity, will also be on hand to engage, entertain and take photos. Have you been to Santa Ana’s new bowling lanes yet? Round 1 opened up at the MainPlace Mall a few months ago. They offer bowling, karaoke, billiards and an arcade. This is their fourth location in California. Click here to see the other locations.

(February 26, 2016) – The Santa Ana Public Schools Foundation (SAPSF) in partnership with the Santa Ana Unified School District is celebrating the success and creativity of the arts during the 4th Annual Artspiration, an event benefiting the Santa Ana Unified School District Arts and Music Programs, to be held Thursday, March 10, 2016, 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. at the beautiful Bowers Museum, located at 2002 N. Main Street, in Santa Ana.
