SAPD officers witnessed a drive-by shooting last night and arrested the suspects
Our Facebook page readers reported a shooting last night at the Townsend apartments by Raitt and McFadden. They were right!
As it turned out SAPD police offers were conducting proactive patrol checks in the Townsend neighborhood at the time and they witnessed a drive-by shooting occur.
The police immediately pursued the suspects and of course they sped off.
The suspects led police on a short pursuit following the shooting and fled on foot, but were ultimately found by police in the 2000 block of Myrtle Street after officers set up a perimeter, according to the O.C. Register.
They were taken into custody. An assault rifle was also recovered.
Bad news though – the arrested juvenile suspects were ultimately released pending further investigation.
No victims were located that may have been hit by the gunfire.
A renovated Santa Ana Water Station receives an award
The City of Santa Ana Public Works Agency this month was presented the B.E.S.T. Water Project award by the Southern California chapter of the American Public Works Association for the renovation of the Walnut Water Pump Station located at 723 W. Walnut St.
The B.E.S.T. Award, which stands for “Building Excellence, Shaping Tomorrow,” for the Walnut Water Pump Station was presented at an award luncheon held on Dec. 10 in Lakewood. The Public Works Agency’s Water Resources Team (pictured) accepted the award.
The newly renovated Walnut Water Pump station facility now operates with the latest technology and efficiency standards. This $5 million project was funded through the City’s Water Enterprise Fund rate revenue.
The project included the construction of a new building, new piping, new pumps and new electrical controls with state-of-the-art automation. The station uses more efficient controls to reduce the amount of energy needed to pump the same amount of water.
This pump station is currently fed by three wells and has a 6 million-gallon tank that serves as a storage facility. Walnut Water Pump station serves the heart of the City’s Downtown, making the station a critical infrastructure to the water system.
School lockdown lifted as the SAPD makes an arrest
A suspect parolee at large was located by the SAPD this afternoon with the help of their K9 officer Kaylee, who found the suspect in a victim’s bathroom.
The Suspect is now in custody.The lockdown has been lifted at a nearby school.
The arrest was made in the area of Maple & Walnut.

The SAPD is reporting police activity in the area of Maple & Walnut.
A local school is on lockdown. The Advanced Learning Academy has an Elementary School near that location.

The SAPD has hired 50 new police officers in the past year
The Santa Ana Police Department has reached record police staffing levels following the hiring of 50 new police officers in calendar year 2019, which has not occurred in over 20 years. Public safety and the hiring of all authorized police officer vacancies has been the single highest policing priority for the City Council, the community and the Department. This historic outcome furthers the City’s commitment to public safety. We welcome these new officers as they join the ranks of one of the nation’s premier police departments. This increase is a key part of the Police Department’s commitment to ensure the safety and security of all those who live, work and do business in the city.
In 2017, Police Chief David Valentin inherited 67 police officer vacancies. In 2018, the department assembled a recruitment team supported by a comprehensive strategic plan with the department’s goal to build a highly skilled, highly diverse department whose m embers are trained to handle the ongoing policing issues and are equally equipped to deal with the city’s changing policing priorities. In 2019, Chief Valentin challenged the recruitment team with the goal of hiring 50 new officers in one calendar year, which again has not been done in over 20 years; while at the same time actually raising the standards of qualified candidates. All this was accomplished while the department continued to hire several other critical support professional staff positions.
In 2020, the department will continue its recruitment work and focus on lowering response times for calls for police service, proactively impact violent crime and address quality of life issues across the City, as made possible by this hiring mission. As we end 2019 and transition into 2020, the following staffing initiatives have been directly supported by these hiring accomplishments:
1) Enhanced Patrol staffing
2) Additional Quality Of Life Team and home lessness response staffing
3) Additional Vice Unit staffing
4) Establishment of a NEW Metropolitan Division and Major Enforcement Team – MET* (similar to the original 2005
Strike Force; a full-time proactive SWAT element)
The MET Team will deploy effective January 2020 with a hybrid, flexible mission of supporting the Department’s Community Policing philosophy to proactively address violent crime across the City.
On Tuesday, December 17th , the City Council approved additional funding of $2.7 million a year for the remaining police officer positions that were needed to meet the 50-officer hiring goal.
“The unanimous decision by the City Council on Tuesday night to provide funding for 18 new police officers demonstrates the City’s firm commitment to maintaining and improving public safety throughout Santa Ana,” Mayor Miguel Pulido said. “I applaud Chief Valentin and his staff for their hard work in ensuring we mainta in a rob ust and talented police force.”
“With the addition of these officers we took a major step forward fulfilling our primary obligation, which is a safe community for the residents of Santa Ana,” Mayor Pro Tem Juan Villegas said. “Chief Valentin has and will continue to ensure these officers further enhance community trust.”
Chief Valentin added, “With the continued support of the City Council and City Manager, our Department has focused on hiring the much needed officers to address the policing priorities of our community. The staffing of the department needed to accomplish the service levels our community deserves and focus areas of our Department moving forward, are outlined in our Department’s 2019 – 2024 Strategic Plan. I am very proud of the work the men and women of the Department do on a daily basis; with focus on responsive and defensible police actions. The hiring of these positions, will continue to support our Community Oriented and Traditional Policing strategies.”
The SAPD shut down an illegal gambling den at Santa Ana’s Uno Free Pizza
The SAPD conducted a raid this afternoon at Uno Free Pizza, located at 2525 W. 17th St. They were not looking for illegal pizza! Turns out this business was found to be an illegal gambling operation, according to the SAPD.
17 people were detained during the raid and 4 gambling machines were seized. The O.C. Register reported that two people were arrested on suspicion of having outstanding warrants, and one person was arrested on suspicion of illegal gaming.
The SAPD reported that the raid happened due to “community complaints.” However they could have just read Uno Free Pizza’s Yelp page and discovered what was up there. Here are a few excerpts from that Yelp page:
- Don’t go looks like a drug den. Super shady. I went in and there was no one at the counter. Just a bunch of people in the very back that didn’t look like they were there for pizza.

- I don’t normally leave bad reviews, but I got screwed out of a Pepsi and the Pizza was terrible! I asked about the special, and they told me I would get a Pepsi, so I upgraded my order to get the Pepsi and they decided I wasn’t going to get the pepsi because my order didn’t come out to 9 dollars, after I ordered the large pizza! What the heck kind of scam is that? They wouldn’t even give my money back after I asked for a refund. This place should get shut down. We need a new pizza joint here. This place has some seriously fake reviews.
- Every since the new management this place suck! Pizza is not good anymore,service is not good I miss the old workers nice and friendly.
- Guy gave me the worst customer service. I asked for a refill for the fountain drink and he asked for money but the way he asked was like he was trolling me. I told him it should be free (I didn’t have change) and he said if I don’t like it leave. They way he said it was like he wanted to fight . I think this place used to be great but for some reason now it seems like a front since in the back room there is what looks like homeless people ages 16-20 smoking and drinking in the back… something isn’t rite with what’s happening there. I wouldn’t be surprised if this place ends up on the news for some sex or drug scandal. Be careful.
Free Sinatra at the Park concert set for Dec. 21 at Birch Park
Get read for a fun and free community concert at one of Santa Ana’s favorite parks. Birch Park will host the Sinatra at the Park concert, which will feature the Santa Ana High School Jazz Band from 1 p.m.-2:15 p.m., and then from 2:45-4 p.m. on Dec. 21.
The Elite Fitness Sinatra Jazz Band will perform music from the iconic singer Frank Sinatra. This event is produced by Elite Fitness Downtown, The Downtown Neighborhood Association, and the City of Santa Ana.
Birch Park is located at 400 West 3rd Street. This park has been around since the early 1900’s, as seen here. And Birch Park has been hosting bands since the 1920’s as seen here.
The County of Orange has been targeted by yet another fake news attack about their U.S. Census outreach program
Another fake news attack has been launched against the County of Orange as the SAUSD and the City of Santa Ana continue to chomp at the bits after the County opted to pay non-profits to promote next year’s U.S. Census in Santa Ana and Tustin.
This time the media source in question is alleging that the County is paying the City of Garden Grove to market the Census, which seems to run counter to the County’s arguments that they prefer not to work with civic agencies.
The truth of the matter is that what was actually funded in Garden Grove was a nonprofit by the name of the Community Action Partnership. They are going to subcontract with the City of Garden Grove to do a small part of the Census outreach. This situation is very different from giving all of the money to the City of Santa Ana and the SAUSD with none of it going to the community clinics/non-profits.
Subcontracting part of the work with the City of Garden Grove illustrates how the Community Action Partnership nonprofit is realistic and wise in knowing where the money is best used to reach different segments of the hard to reach population, as opposed to the one size fits all approach offered by the City of Santa Ana and the SAUSD.
And this latest fake news attack ignores the fact that both the SAUSD and the City of Santa Ana are already getting paid to market the Census. You can see this on the SAUSD’s home page (as seen above).
For some reason though the City of Santa Ana makes zero mention of the Census on their own home page! However they just announced a series of Census workshops what will be held at the Santa Ana public libraries. So clearly the City of Santa Ana has money to promote the Census and they are already doing it!
The City Council takes action to curb the abuse of homeless resources in Santa Ana
The Santa Ana City Council during its closed session meeting last night, Dec. 17, 2019, voted unanimously to authorize the City Attorney to take legal action to curb the abuse of its homeless resources by others.
The Council voted to bring action against those cities, the county and any other entities engaging in an organized effort to transport homeless individuals out of their area to Santa Ana.
Council members also unanimously authorized bringing legal action against the Mental Health Association of Orange County to ensure that its operations in Santa Ana are nuisance-free.
Additionally, the Council directed City staff to proceed with the existing cross-complaint against the County of Orange and other Orange County cities to:
- Address the release of jail inmates in Santa Ana;
- Object to the County’s planned homeless shelter site on Yale Street in Santa Ana; and
- Ensure that social service providers contracting with the County do not disproportionally impact Santa Ana.
“Through no fault of our own, an undue burden in this countywide humanitarian crisis has been placed on Santa Ana’s homeless shelters, social services, neighborhoods and resources,” Santa Ana City Manager Kristine Ridge said today.
In 2018, the City of Santa Ana conducted a point-in-time count of the homeless living in the city and found that over 50 percent of that population had arrived in Santa Ana from other parts of the county.
The City has been spending nearly $17 million annually on homelessness-related matters and expects that to increase to $25 million in the current fiscal year.

The Santa Ana City Hall will be closed from Dec. 24 through Jan. 1
The City of Santa Ana will have an extended closure over the holidays.
City Hall will be closed from Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2019, through Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2020. It will reopen on Thursday, Jan. 2, 2020.
Police, fire and other emergency services will operate normally during this time. Dial 911 for emergencies.
To request service for issues including water and sewer leaks, street signal outages, street maintenance and hazards, and fallen trees and branches, call the Public Works hotline at (714) 647-3380. Construction projects in the public right-of-way will be working from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Dec. 26-31. To report any issues, call (714) 615-0892.
Additional service information over the extended holiday closure:
• Street sweeping: There will be no street sweeping on Dec. 24 (Christmas Eve), Dec. 25 (Christmas) and Jan. 1 (New Year’s Day). Regular schedule on other days.
• Trash service: On Dec. 25 and Jan. 1, trash collection will be delayed for one day. Regular schedule on other days.
• Sandbags: : The City of Santa Ana Corporate Yard is open every day over the holidays offering free sandbags for Santa Ana residents and businesses in case of rain. The Corporate Yard is at 215 S. Center St., Santa Ana. Hours are 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Evidence of residence must be provided at the security gate for 10 prefilled sandbags, and an additional 20 sandbags will be provided if you fill them.
• Utilities billing: Payments can be made online at www.santa-ana.org/mus. Payments also may be deposited in the drop box or kiosk located outside the entrance to City Hall. Payments mailed over the holidays will be received and processed during the holiday break.

DTSA’s first Tamale Festival set for this Thursday night
Tis the season for tamales! Downtown Santa Ana invites you to the Inaugural Tamale Festival, also known as a Tamalada, on Thursday, December 19, 2019.
The festival, which is co-sponsored by the City of Santa Ana, will take place from 5 to 10 p.m. on West Fourth Street between Ross and Broadway streets.
Bring your hearty appetite to the Tamale Fest because there will be a variety of scrumptious tamales provided by: El Indio, Chevita’s, Latino Health Access, Café Cultura, Chapter One, La Vegana Mexicana and Palapas.
The event is free and open to the public.
Live entertainment will begin at 5 p.m. with DJ Allierockk, followed by Trio Salazar, Mantra (Tribute to Mana) and Mariachi Perla. Beer Garden sponsored by The Frida Cinema and operated by The Mission Bar.
