Three men stole fragrances from the MainPlace Macy’s last night

On Thursday, 11/7/2019, at 7:53 pm, three male black adults entered the Macy’s store at the MainPlace Mall during normal business hours. They were wearing hoodies and possible bandannas covering their faces.

The suspects walked directly towards the fragrance counters and shattered the glass display cases. The suspects removed fragrances and placed them inside black duffel bags, which they carried into the store.

The suspects then exited the store via the south doors to an awaiting vehicle, possibly a silver sedan. The vehicle was last seen leaving the parking structure, northbound onto Main Street and out of sight.

Woman arrested for impersonating a cop in Costa Mesa

The Costa Mesa Police Department (CMPD) is seeking to identify any potential victims of a woman arrested for impersonating a police officer. The arrestee’s photo and vehicle are included.

On the evening of Nov. 1, 2019, the CMPD Gang Unit conducted a traffic stop on a white, 4-door, 2016 Chevrolet Impala equipped with a law enforcement light bar, and California exempt license plates in the area of Harbor Boulevard and Merrimac Way in the City of Costa Mesa.

The sole occupant and driver, Michelle Brianna Hughes, 30, Huntington Beach, was wearing a tactical vest with a “POLICE” patch on the front of the vest. Hughes was also wearing a law enforcement duty belt which had handcuffs, a fake law enforcement badge, a Taser, and a loaded unregistered handgun with a high-capacity magazine on her belt.

Hughes identified herself to the arresting officers as a deputy for the Orange County Sheriff’s Department. Hughes is not a law enforcement officer and was in possession of other police uniforms from other law enforcement agencies as well as other government exempt license plates. She was arrested for carrying an unregistered loaded firearm, being in possession of a high capacity magazine, and impersonating a police officer. She then bailed out.

CMPD is seeking the public’s help in identifying victims who have possibly had contact with Hughes while falsely impersonating a police officer. The biggest losers in this week’s Santa Ana Special Election

It appears that Phil Bacerra has won this week’s Santa Ana Special City Council Election and he will take over Ward 4, which was vacated a few months ago by Roman Reyna.

Carolyn Torres easily won the SAUSD School Board Special Election, ending the political career of longtime City Council Member David Benavides.

It is time now to have a look at this election’s biggest losers:

The Santa Ana Police Officers Association – they supported Bacerra last year and then inexplicably jumped off his bandwagon and spent money on Jennifer Oliva instead. She came in second to last place. Oops! To make matters worse they spent perhaps $60K on SAUSD School Board candidate Cecilia Aguinaga and she came in last place. The SAPOA now has zero pull on Bacerra – and they have already antagonized City Council Members Juan Villegas and Ceci Iglesias, who they are trying to recall. What the heck is the SAPOA trying to accomplish? Their political strategy is a train wreck!
Former City Council Members David Benavides, Sal Tinajero and Roman Reyna. As noted above, Benavides’ political career is now in tatters after he was whipped by Torres in the SAUSD Special Election. But Benavides also joined his former City Council colleagues Tinajero and Reyna in supporting Beatriz Mendoza for Ward 4, and she lost to Bacerra. All three of them are now on the outside looking in. Tinajero and SAUSD Trustee John Palacio were likely at the helm of the Mendoza campaign. This is a huge loss for them! They tried last year to destroy Bacerra and now he has the upper hand.
City Councilman Jose Solorio – he has been trying for years to become the new Mayor Miguel Pulido. But Bacerra now figures to inherit Pulido’s backers, not Solorio. And despite the SAPOA’s ridiculous attempt to recall Iglesias she is now a candidate for Mayor and will likely win as there figure to be a half dozen liberals who will split the left-wing vote.
Santa Ana’s “Berniecrats” – They won in the SAUSD race, with Torres, but lost Ward 4 despite a solid effort by political newcomer Manny Escamilla. Unfortunately for them there were just too many liberal Democrats on the ballot, which allowed the moderate, Bacerra, to prevail.
Torres’ victory by the way is bad news for Santa Ana families as she will inevitably oppose school choice and attack our charter schools. We need more school choice in Santa Ana, not less! No doubt more families will now put their kids in Tustin and Irvine schools as they escape from the SAUSD and our awful School Board.

There is a chance, although slim, that Escamilla will pull ahead of Bacerra. However in our experience the candidate that is leading when the early results come in usually prevails. We expect Bacerra to pull this one out.

The overall winner of this election is Mayor Pulido. Now he has a firm City Council majority to work with as he nears the end of his term. While he will wrap up his work on the City Council he is planning to run next year for the First District of the O.C. Board of Supervisors.

The City of Santa Ana has $493K available to fund nonprofit homeless service providers

The City of Santa Ana announces the availability of approximately $493,000 in U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Emergency Solutions Grant (ESG) funding for nonprofit homeless service providers. These funds are provided to entitlement cities and counties annually on a formula basis to assist sheltered and unsheltered homeless persons, those at risk of homelessness, and to provide services necessary to help those persons to quickly regain stability in permanent housing after experiencing a housing crisis and/or homelessness.

The Orange County ESG Collaborative is releasing the ESG application to organizations that provide homeless prevention and rapid rehousing services, street outreach and operate emergency shelters. The Collaborative which was created to ensure that funds are leveraged to create maximum impact in Orange County, includes the County of Orange, City of Irvine, City of Anaheim, City of Santa Ana and City of Garden Grove.

Community tree planting day at the Santa Ana Zoo this Saturday

Community members are invited to join the Santa Ana Zoo as we plant new trees throughout the zoo!

On Saturday, November 09, 2019 from 9:00am – 1:00pm over 20 new trees will be planted in multiple areas of the zoo. Trees were funded through the California ReLEAF Social Equity Grant Program to provide trees as part of creating and sustaining healthy communities in California. Trees being planted at the Zoo replace those damaged by insects, wind and removed and create new planted areas as part of the “urban forest” environment at the zoo. Especially in urban areas, trees sequester carbon and other pollutants from the air, act as wind and sound barriers, slow runoff from developed areas and create a more aesthetically pleasing environment. Over 100 new trees are being planted at the zoo as part of this project.

Event participants will be treated to an educational, introductory presentation on the value and types of trees being planted. Then, the fun begins as volunteers get their hands dirty putting trees in the ground! Trees being planted will range in size from 15 gallon pots to large boxed trees and will be placed in a number of locations throughout the zoo. At the end of the day, volunteers will have a special encounter with one of our animal friends as a “thank you” for their participation.

Volunteers of all ages are welcome and will be provided with a City volunteer waiver. Children must be accompanied by an adult at all times. Closed-toe shoes are required, work gloves are recommended, all other supplies will be provided.

Eleven Townsend Street gang members arrested in a multi agency sweep

In April of 2019 the FBI Orange County Violent Gang Task Force (OCVGTF) began an operation targeting the Townsend Street Gang. During this investigation, firearms and narcotics have been seized during controlled purchases and search warrants.

Several of the target subjects also have felony arrests and/or convictions for firearms offenses and other violent crimes including attempted murder and murder.

This operation included the controlled purchase of narcotics, surveillance, and search warrants. As a result, 11 subjects have been indicted by the Orange County District Attorney’s office.

The identified suspects include: Jairo Echeverria, 25; Jaime Garcia, 28; Fernando Cuevas; Alexis Lara, 24; Giovanni Marcial, 27; Ricardo Solorio, 19; Omar Valencia Montes, 23; Jordan Castaneda, 21; Carlos Daniel Godinez Sanchez, 19; Alexander Laur, 24; Fernando Guerrero, 35; and Edgar Calvo, 26.

Several of the people arrested Thursday had prior convictions and felony arrests including for attempted murder and murder and two were in violation of their probation, according to KTLA.

Five guns, including an assault rifle, a bulletproof vest, 3 pounds of drugs and $16,000 in cash were seized during the investigation, according to the SAPD.

The Townsend Street gang is a multi-generational extremely violent gang that has been around since the 1980s and currently has about 112 documented members who are active from Raitt Street to Jerome Park and from McFadden Avenue to Wilshire Avenue, according to the O.C. Register.

The SAPD will conduct a DUI and driver’s license checkpoint this Friday night

The Santa Ana Police Department will be conducting a DUI / Driver’s License checkpoint on Friday November 8th, 2019. It will begin at 9:00PM and is scheduled to conclude at 2:30AM. It will be conducted in the area of 400 N Fairview Street, in the City of Santa Ana.

The primary purpose of a DUI Checkpoint is to deter impaired driving, not to increase arrests. All too often, members of our community are senselessly injured or killed on local roadways by impaired drivers. This DUI / Driver’s License checkpoint is an effort to reduce those tragedies, as well as ensuring drivers have a valid driver’s license. The DMV reports that unlicensed drivers are 4.9 times more likely to cause a fatal crash than a licensed driver is.

The checkpoint will be staffed by officers trained in the detection of alcohol and drug impairment to provide on-the-spot assessments of drivers suspected of alcohol or drug impairment. All checkpoints are conducted in accordance with the guidelines for DUI checkpoint operations outlined in the California Supreme Court decision, Ingersoll v. Palmer.

All vehicles may be checked and drivers who are under the influence of alcohol and / or drugs will be arrested. Our objective is to send a clear message to those who are considering driving a motor vehicle after consuming alcohol and / or drugs – Drunk Driving, Over the Limit, Under Arrest. The public is encouraged to help keep roadways safe by calling 911 if they see a suspected impaired driver. Funding for this operation is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The SAPD has arrested an auto theft suspect

Suspect Pedro Junior Lopez (33) has been located and arrested.

ORIGINAL MESSAGE – On 10/09/2019 at 8:20 AM, wanted suspect Lopez was caught on video surveillance stealing a vehicle from the rear parking lot of the Jack In The Box.

Prior to being reported stolen, Lopez was stopped in the vehicle in the area of Chestnut and Standard Avenue, and provided a false name. The vehicle was later found abandoned at 100 S. Cedar and was partially stripped. Anyone with information on the whereabouts of Lopez please contact Detective Romero at (714) 245-8529.

The SAPD is looking for a chunky burglar who stole tools from a Home Depot

On April 20, 2019, wanted suspect Daniel Anthony Puig (50) entered Home Depot and removed several power tools from their boxes and walked out without paying for them. Puig is a repeat offender at Home Depot. An arrest warrant has been issued for Puig.

The SAPD is looking for a missing person with mental health issues

Missing person John Isaac Chadwell (47) was reported missing on Sunday, 11/03/2019 after he left his girlfriend’s residence in Santa Ana.

Prior to being reported missing, he was in the hospital for several unrelated medical issues and suffers from mental health related issues.

Bacerra and Torres leading in the Santa Ana Special Election early results

Phil Bacerra should have won last November, when Roman Reyna fraudulently took Ward 4 of the Santa Ana City Council. Reyna has since quit the Council and now has to pay back the taxpayers a half million dollars. Tonight Bacerra got closer to taking Ward 4 as he came out on top in the early polling in today’s Special Election.

Bacerra currently has just over 28% of the total vote, with 2,991 votes, edging out former Planning Commissioner Beatriz Mendoza, who has 24.7% of the vote.

Should Bacerra maintain his lead he will become the first Filipino-American member of the Santa Ana City Council and perhaps the second Asian to serve in this manner. Apparently there was a Japanese American on the City Council many years ago.

Former Santa Ana planner Manny Escamilla has 23.5% of the vote; Bishop Gale Oliver Jr. has 10.8% of the vote; Arts Commissioner Jennifer Oliva has 8.3% of the vote and in last place is businessman Brandon Sisco, with 4.5% of the vote – 475 votes to be precise.

As we predicted the turnout was super low. We did not expect the race to be this close. Mendoza did a lot better than we expected – but there is no second place prize for her.

Over in the SAUSD School Board race the only teacher on the ballot, Carolyn Torres, is firmly in control with 45.4% of the vote while former Santa Ana City Councilman David Benavides is watching his political career careen to an end with 31.9% of the vote. Perhaps campaigning alongside Reyna was a bad idea after all?

Torres’ apparent victory is bad news for charter schools and for parents who value school choice.

The program provides annual grants on a formula basis to entitled cities and counties to develop viable urban communities by providing decent housing and a suitable living environment, and by expanding economic opportunities, principally for low- to moderate-income persons.

A bicyclist was killed in an early morning hit and run crash today near Heritage Park

On Monday, November 4th, 2019 at approximately 3:00 am, the Santa Ana Police Department (SAPD) received several calls of a male down in the roadway who was possibly on a bicycle near the intersection of Newhope and Camille Streets.

Officers responded to the area and found a male down in the roadway with major trauma. Orange County Fire Authority (OCFA) personnel responded and began to treat the male before pronouncing him deceased at the scene.

The preliminary investigation has revealed the male, who was either walking alongside or riding a bicycle, was in the roadway when he was struck by a vehicle headed south on Newhope. The vehicle involved in this collision fled from the scene prior to the officers’ arrival. The vehicle remains outstanding and it, along with the driver, remain unidentified. Alcohol is believed to have played a role in this collision. The collision remains under investigation.

Who will win in Santa Ana’s Special Election this Tuesday?

You don’t get a consolation prize when you run for office. You either win or lose. After many weeks of politicking a number of local Santa Ana candidates will discover their fate this Tuesday, Nov. 5, when the combined Santa Ana City Council and SAUSD School Board Special Election finally comes to fruition.

So who will win these seats?

Let’s take a look first at how we arrived at this moment. The City Council seat, in Ward 4, opened up after the incumbent, Roman Reyna, was sued in civil court by the candidate he defeated last November, Phil Bacerra. Reyna it seems moved into Ward 4 but fudged his campaign paperwork. Eventually he was charged by the OCDA and he was indicted and fined a half million dollars! He had to resign from the City Council and promise never to run for local office again.

Bacerra is the leading candidate to replace Reyna. Other challengers include former Santa Ana planner Manny Escamilla, former Planning Commissioner Beatriz Mendoza, business owners Jennifer Oliva and Brandon Sisco, and Bishop Gale Oliver Jr.

Escamilla’s base is the left-wing of the Democratic Party, essentially those who support the likes of Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren. While those voters are fired up they are small in number and given to not voting.

Mendoza used to work for U.S. Rep. Loretta Sanchez. She has the support of the same people that supported Reyna last year. She is a single mom and the campaign has been very tough on her.

Sisco is an outlier. He does not seem to be spending any money on his campaign. I am not sure why he is even running. But he seems to be having fun in the process.

Bishop Oliver Jr. is getting a lot of support from conservatives in the area. There are a lot of folks walking precincts with him. However he has not run for office before and presumably his name I.D. is low. Perhaps voters will be moved to vote for a minister?

Oliva is getting some help from the local police union, the Santa Ana Police Officers Association. So she has sent out some mail and has signs up. This is her first campaign too. Council Member David Penaloza has endorsed her and she serves him on our Arts Commission.

Bacerra however has a big advantage as he was on the November ballot last year and he remains popular in north Santa Ana. Like Escamilla, he is a college graduate and a planner by trade. He has served on the Planning Commission and he has plenty of contacts, here in Santa Ana and also up in Sacramento. He will benefit from the fact that these types of elections tend to have low turnouts that favor older voters. That’s his base!

If I was a betting man I would bet on Bacerra to pull this one out.

The SAUSD is also holding a Special Election after their former Trustee, Cecilia Iglesias, got elected to the Santa Ana City Council last year. The SAUSD Trustees were unable to figure out who to appoint to replace Iglesias so now we get to vote for a replacement.

The candidates include Iglesias’ longtime friend and ally, Gisela Contreras, former City Councilman David Benavides, Anaheim public schoolteacher Carolyn Torres, and Housing Commissioner/Realtor Cecilia Aguinaga.

The same folks walking for Bishop Oliver Jr. are also walking for Contreras. She is the only candidate who fully supports parental choice in education. This is her first campaign but she has the full endorsement and support of Council Member Cecilia Iglesias, a veteran of many elections.

Benavides was once married to a local schoolteacher but he divorced her a few years ago, when he was running for Mayor of Santa Ana. He heads up a local nonprofit, Kidworks, that is definitely in the education arena however he is what he appears to be – a career politician looking for his next gig.

Torres is cut from the same liberal cloth as Escamilla. You can expect her to promote the teacher’s union, oppose school choice (charter schools) and support new taxes and bond measures.

Aguinaga worked for the SAUSD many years ago. She has been involved in Santa Ana politics and community affairs for a long time. She has run a few times for the SAUSD School Board. This time around the local police union has funded several effective campaign mailers for her. However she is not walking precincts and will depend on the mailers and her existing name I.D.

This race is a tough one to call. Benavides has the highest name I.D. but he is covered in Roman Reyna stink and that will scare off a lot of voters. Torres is too liberal for what is a moderate community but her ballot designation is a good one. She is the only teacher on the ballot. Contreras is working hard but has few funds and is relying on grassroots support. Aguinaga has come close before. Perhaps this time she will finally win?

So who are you voting for?
