Video of Grrl Fair protest at the Santa Ana Artists Village
The Grrl Fair Collective held their misguided protest this Saturday, May 6, at the Santa Ana Artists Village Art Walk.
The protest was spurred by allegations that an artist in the basement of the Santora building harassed various members of the Grrl Fair Collective when they held an event in the Santora Building on March 12 of this year.
Andy Verostek, an artist at the Santora, has written a post about the allegations by the Grrl Fair collective that an artist at the Santora harassed a number of them at their recent event. Click here to read his account, which clearly debunks the allegations made by the OC Weekly – which include irresponsible charges that the artists at the Santora building covered up what happened.
Judging from the video, it does not look like very many folks showed up to support this protest.

Main Gallery-The Curiosities of Janice Lowry
The Curiosities of Janice Lowry is a retrospective exhibition that will feature more than 100 artworks including; assemblage, collage, painting, drawing and personal collections. In 2007 OC Weekly named Lowry the region’s best visual artist, praising her assemblages generated from found objects. Lowry is best known for her assemblages, which she described as a way to solve the problem of expensive framing, and for her journals she drew, painted, and collaged for over 30 years. In October of 2007 all of Lowry’s journals, future journals and papers pertaining to her art career were accepted into the permanent collection of the Smithsonian Archives of American Art in Washington D.C. In April 2009 Lowry was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer. She faced the finality of her future in the same way she faced everyday of her life. September 20, 2009 she succumb to the disease at age 63.
Book Release: A beautiful 256-page full-color hardbound standard and special-edition retrospective book will be available for purchase during the exhibition. This publication will include over two hundred works of construction, sculpture, and collage with essays by Jon Gothold, Mike McGee, Mark Ryden, and Joanna Roche.
Project Room-Empire
Texas-based artist Bale Creek Allen will be the next artist-in-residence at Grand Central Art Center. Allen grew up in Fresno, California, but now resides in Austin, Texas. Fresno and Texas, particularly Lubbock where his father is from, have strong influences on Allen’s art. He has been inspired by tumbleweeds, tire treads, and roadkill. As part of his residency Allen will exhibit sculptures from his Empire series in the GCAC Project Room. Empire consists of bronzed objects most of which evoke the feel of Americana: stars, stripes, lone ranger mask, and paper planes. Other objects are a reflection of Allen’s environment: tire treads, and taxidermy rattlesnakes.Allen has an impressive artistic pedigree and works in many different media: painting, drawing, wood work, bronze, ceramics, photography, film, writing, acting, playing drums, and singing. His parents are visual artist and songwriter Terry Allen, and actress Jo Harvey Allen.
Book Release: Grand Central Art Center is publishing a catalog featuring artworks from the Empire series and an essay from Michael Solway.

Grrl Fair collective planning a misguided protest at the next Art Walk
UPDATE: Andy Verostek, an artist at the Santora, has written a post about the allegations by the Grrl Fair collective that an artist at the Santora harassed a number of them at their recent event. Click here to read his account, which clearly debunks the allegations made by the OC Weekly.
“Organizers of this year’s Grrl Fair collective, the county’s decade-old celebration of all things womyn, are planning a protest May 7 in SanTana’s Artists Village during its next Art Walk,” according to the OC Weekly. You can also read about it over at the Orange Juice blog.
The OC Weekly article explains that “They claim that during their March 12 Grrl Fair in downtown SanTana, an artist in the Santora Building constantly groped underage girls, and that Santora management (under the rule of mega-developer Mike Harrah), artists, and the city’s police department have not bothered with their pleas for action.”
Protesting the Art Walk and ripping Mike Harrah, who owns the Santora Building, is ridiculous. Harrah cannot do anything about this. It is a police matter, but the police cannot do anything either. The comments left by readers indicate that the reason the SAPD has not opened an investigation is that none of those making allegations have been willing to put their name on a formal police report. No names – no report. That is how this works.
Until the women who were groped actually file police reports, nothing is going to happen. This planned protest is just going to hurt innocent artists who had nothing to do with any of this.
There are allegations that the artists knew beforehand that they had a pervy guy in their midst. If true, the question is – what could they have done? I have seen all sorts of pervy guys at the Art Walks – including a bunch of local politicians known for cheating on their wives.
This incident however does open up a can of worms for the Art Walk in that there are also allegations that the alleged groper was very drunk. The fact is that many of the art galleries serve alcohol during the Art Walk, and even those that don’t serve it often have liquor on hand for the artists themselves. Should this tradition continue? Or should we leave the alcohol service to the bars and restaurants in the Artists Village? I am told that the Santa Ana Planning Commission is going to look into this.

“Rethink Disability” Art Show to stop the Governor’s 2011/12 budget cuts
R. E. D. Real Estate Downtown, in asociation with Westview Services and Chuntana Art is hosting a “Rethink Disability” Art Show to stop the Governor’s 2011/12 budget cuts, tonight, March 5, from 7:00 pm – 10:00 pm, at 207 Broadway St, Suite B6A2, in Santa Ana, at the Art Walk.
The Governor’s 2011/12 Budget Will Topple Our Service Systems:
*A $750 million cut represents over 20% of the entire DD budget for community services. Add in federal dollars that will be put at risk and you are looking at closer to $1 billion in cuts.
*Not only will California walk away from matching funds, but cuts of this magnitude and the resulting limits to consumer choice would violate federal rules, eliminating more federal dollars.
*The community based service system and providers cannot survive a 20% cut on top of the 10% in cuts already absorbed in the previous two budget years.
*Reduction would not be 20% but 100% as programs would fold, unable to sustain continued stress and fund raising difficulties
*There is no analysis of what a cut of this size would do to local community service provider agencies-no analysis of the impact on the availability of services in the short term or in the long term. How quickly can any system shrink by one fith and maintain continuity.
*Cuts of this magnitude will result in thousands of lost jobs. Not only will service providers have to lay off or severely reduce employee benefits, people with disabilities that our organizations support will lose their jobs too.
*This budget proposal effectively dismantles the Lanterman Act, severely limiting opportunities and choices for persons with developmental disabilities who live and work in their communities.
*20% is an unsurvivable number! The alternatives are ugly–should we: Eliminate services for 48,000 persons?
R.E.D. is asking you to help to alert the community of this pending tsunami of financial destruction. We cannot wait in fear of alarming our vulnerable community. To wait is to be complicit, to say nothing is lay down and abandoned our first duty as advotcates. Standing together, parents, self-adcvocates, service providers, friends are a powerful force. We did it before: We stood up and created this system. Together, we can do it again–and save it!
This March 5th, R.E.D. Gallery presents the magnificent artwork from the artistic clients of Westview Services. Let us raise conciousness against the budget cut proposal from the Governor. Let us demonstrate that we as a community can come together to stop all that is detrimental to it. Join us this evening and look at the exciting, interesting, and meaningful artwork masterpieced by persons with dissabilities. Come and sign a petition that will be sent to the Governor to put a stop to budget cuts to our Services System!!!
Odilon Delgado is the Art Director for the Art Department at Westview Services, come meet him and talk to him!!!!
In addition we will be showing a video documenting the work of Westview’s Clients, by Jorge Linares.

Body piercing, tattoo supplies and custom skateboards, now at the Santora
Did you know that you can get your body pierced, at the Santa Ana Artists Village, but you cannot get a tattoo? Such is the state of the City of Santa Ana’s planning ordinances.
I visited the Santora Building, this Saturday, during the February Art Walk, along with Santa Ana Planning Commissioner Sean Mill. While we were visiting with Matt Southgate, at the Studio Del Sotano, I wandered over to his new neighbor, Seven 1 Four Underground.
I found out that this new gallery is quite different – their services and products include:
- Tattoo Supplies
- Tattoo Kits
- Tattoo Machines
- Disposable Tubes
- Flash
- Body Jewelry
- Plugs
- Hoops
- and Dermal
Seven 1 Four also is home to SA Cheapskate, which offers custom airbrushed skateboards and supplies.
They would love to offer tattoos, but first we will have to work on changing the zoning ordinance for the area. For whatever reason, the folks at City Hall have not been very warm to the idea of tattoos, but the fact is that tattoos are an accepted art form. Some of the wealthiest people (athletes and musicians) are covered in tattoos. The gang stigma is really just a small sliver of the tattoo universe and should not be a reason to ban tattoo shops in our downtown.
Seven 1 Four Underground is a group of active and dedicated artists from different corners of Orange County. Their goal is to diversify the car and bike culture by working on projects together and sharing their personal techniques and experience to give their clients a wider spectrum of choices for their unique projects.
Seven 1 Four Designs can handle full show ready paint jobs, including air brushing, but they also offer a weekend cruiser special which varies in pricing according to your vehicle and layout desired.
Come by and see them at their gallery, located at 207 N Broadway, Suite B-10, in Downtown Santa Ana, at the Santora Building.
Be sure to call if you would like to be one of their featured artists: (714) 597-0716 / (714) 307-6704.
