Bestselling author Karl Marlantes will be at the Bowers Museum on Wednesday, November 19 at 7:30 pm for a free lecture and signing to discuss his latest non-fiction work, What It Is Like to Go to War. Mr. Marlantes will be interviewed by Mary Menzel, Director of the California Center for the Book. Mr. Marlantes is a Vietnam Veteran, a Rhodes Scholar, and the author of the New York Times best-selling novel Matterhorn: A Novel of the Vietnam War.
In What It Is Like to Go to War, Mr. Marlantes takes the reader on a deeply personal and frank journey into what it is like to experience the ordeal of combat. THE BONSAI TRADITION: CULTURAL ARTS OF JAPAN

This harmonious display consists of 28 trees selected from private collections who are devotees to the living, natural art form of bonsai. The Viewing Stones, or ‘found art,’ are collected from various parts of the U.S. and Asia. The artists, all members from Kofu Bonsai Kai, will be available each day to answer questions and to help you understand the beauty and simplicity of this exquisite and inspiring art form. Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month at the Bowers Museum
Orange County Institution Offers Programs, Exhibits Showcasing Hispanic Heritage
The Bowers Museum of Cultural Art in Santa Ana offers several wonderful exhibits and events to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month in Orange County. In addition to fascinating permanent exhibits showcasing Hispanic cultures throughout the Americas, the Bowers will also host the opening screenings for the 5th OC Film Fiesta on Sept. 18 and 19.
Founded in 1936, the Bowers Museum evokes the inviting serenity of a Californio hacienda, with its arched corridors and red tiled roof. Inside its halls, the Bowers contains permanent exhibits of Pre-Columbian Mesoamerican artifacts, California’s Missions and Ranchos era and Southern California’s Native peoples. Continue reading→

5th OC Film Fiesta Kicks Off Thurs., Sept. 18 at Bowers Museum
Fest Opens With Volando Bajo, Homage to Mexican Musica Romantica of the ‘80s
(Santa Ana) The 5th Annual OC Film Fiesta opens Thurs., Sept. 18 at 7 pm at the Bowers Museum in Santa Ana with a free screening of Volando Bajo, acclaimed Mexican director Beto Gomez’s hilarious homage to musica romantica of the 1980s. The Bowers Museum is located at 2002 Main St. in Santa Ana. The OC Film Fiesta, which features three weekends of films, documentaries and workshops, runs through Sunday, Oct. 5.
Presented by the City of Santa Ana PRCSA and produced by Pocharte, the OC Film Fiesta is a free cinematic celebration of Orange County’s diversity and multicultural heritage. The OC Film Fiesta continues on Friday, Sept. 19 at the Bowers with a special 1:30 pm screening of Fernando de Fuentes’ 1936 classic Vamonos con Pancho Villa with a discussion about the film’s legendary composer, Silvestre Revueltas. The Bowers Museum is proud to present a number of wonderful Latino programs in August, which showcase the diversity of the Latino community. The Bowers Museum is located at 2002 N. Main St. in the heart of Santa Ana. All events take place in the Norma Kershaw Auditorium. Student tickets are only $5.
On Thursday, August 14, join award-winning lecturer Jacqueline Hahn for An Evening in Buenos Aires: The “Good Air,” the Paris of South America. Madame Hahn will take you on a delightful trip to Buenos Aires. Explore the rich history, geography, architecture, sprawling avenues, parks, museums, and cafés of this enchanting city. Bowers Museum’s Fiesta Latina Celebrates Art, Culture, Community on July 27
Admission Free to First 1,500 Visitors and to All Santa Ana Residents
Santa Ana, Calif. — The Bowers Museum announces a new community program, Fiesta Latina, as part of the New California Treasures project supported by the James Irvine Foundation.
For one day only, Sunday, July 27, 2014, the Bowers will offer free admission to the first 1,500 visitors, plus free admission to all Santa Ana residents, to see its wonderful exhibitions and take advantage of this fun-filled day. The Fiesta Latina takes place from 11am-3:30pm at the Bowers Museum.
Visitors will enjoy the Latin music of boleros, rancheras, tangos and more with DJ Soto. Guests can learn how to dance salsa and compete in a dance competition to the live music of Cantamerica, an award-winning guitar ensemble, as they perform in the John M. Lee Court from 2 pm to 3:30 pm. A demonstration/performance of Brazilian martial arts will take place by Capoeira Brasil Tustin at 1:30 pm. Continue reading→
