I wonder how many of those Irvine residents that showed up at the O.C. Board of Supervisors meeting this week to complain about the homeless will be at church this Easter Sunday praising Jesus – who pretty much asked his followers to take care of the poor?
It is one of the dichotomies of conservative Christian Orange County. There are churches all over the place but they minister, for the most part, to the well-off and mostly ignore the downtrodden. Continue reading→
Live, Work, Play, and Worship
A New Movement of Neighborhood Churches in Orange County
Santa Ana, CA – May 12, 2017 – Sovereign Grace Church in Old Towne Orange announces plans for a new congregation in Downtown Santa Ana. As in Orange, Santa Ana is becoming an attractive place to live, work, and play. Sovereign Grace want to add worship to the list.
“Remember back when neighborhoods had churches?” asks Pastor Eric Turbedsky. “The average church- goer in Orange County passes numerous churches on their way to a Sunday service. No wonder we find it so hard to love our neighbors. We don’t know our neighbors.” This move to worship where you live, not unlike the “buy local” movement, encourages people to invest in the life of their community. Continue reading→

LARGEST GRADUATION CLASS OF THE “OPEN WORD,” A BLOSSOMING REVIVAL IN CHRISTIANITY
SANTA ANA—Joyful cheers, applause and confetti erupted in the auditorium as 1,250 students graduated from Zion Mission Seminary on April 30, 2017. This is the largest graduating class in the United States from the program since its inception in 1984.
Zion Mission Seminary is known in the United States for its 6-month “Open Word” curriculum that teaches biblical prophecies and how they will fulfill. While theology schools and seminaries traditionally charge a great sum for tuition, Zion Mission Seminary is offered free of charge to the public. Continue reading→
A Peace & Unity March and Rally has been set for Saturday, April 30, 2016. This is a community city-wide event that will take place at Jerome Park, located at 2215 McFadden Ave., in Santa Ana.
The march will start at 11 a.m. and the rally will start at 12 noon.
The event will include:
I get a little tired about the constant bashing of Santa Ana. Yes the ongoing gang war sucks but there is still a lot to love about our city, such as:
$3 movies at the MainPlace Mall
When a new movie comes out my kids and I will quickly label it as either a “must-see” or a “$3 movie.” Most films are in the latter category (and a lot of them end up on our Redbox and Netflix list). While I would love it if there was a first run movie theater in Santa Ana I really like being able to go to the Picture Show at the MainPlace Mall to see movies that have been out for a few weeks, if not months, for only $3 (and only $2 on Tuesdays).
The MainPlace Mall
I really dislike South Coast Plaza. Who can afford what the stores there have to offer? But the MainPlace Mall is just the ticket with a decent array of stores and anchors and a great food selection that now includes wood-fired pizza at Blaze Pizza and bbq ribs at the new Lucille’s. There is ample parking and two frozen yogurt places – plus my eye doctor. The previous owners of the MainPlace Mall, Westfield, just sold the shopping center to a group of developers. I hope they don’t mess it up! Continue reading→
Santa Ana has a new church, called the Celebration Church. They are celebrating a grand opening on Sunday, Sep. 13, at 11:15 a.m. The Celebration Church is located at 555 E. Memory Lane, in north Santa Ana. They are across the street from Santiago Park, near the Town and Country Manor Retirement Center. The church entrance is off of Lawson Dr. The building was formerly occupied by the Community Bible Church. That congregation appears to have moved to Huntington Beach.
Dr. Gary Tangeman is the lead pastor at this new church. He was formerly the senior pastor at Crossroads Church, in Bremerton, WA, according to Linkedin. He wrote the book The Disciple Making Church of the 21st Century published in 1996 by Christian Literature Crusade. Tangeman posits in this book that the church exists to glorify God by making disciples, and that pastors and lay leaders alike need to understand and utilize certain crucial principles of ministry to accomplish this goal. Newsong Church is consolidating their Sunday services and some of our ministry activities to their Santa Ana campus. This is big news as they have been around for twenty years – in Irvine. That campus will now be used for training and events.
Newsong acquired what used to be Santa Ana’s historic First Baptist Church last year and renamed it 10Ten, a play on words as they are located at 1010 17th St., in Santa Ana. The church is now full – while it was literally dying when it was First Baptist. This merger of the two Newsong churches will be a real boon to restaurants in Santa Ana as the congregation is bound to have lunch in the area after church services.
The first combined services at Santa Ana are set for this Sunday, December 7, 2014, at 9:00 and 11:00 AM. This will be part of their preview phase in Santa Ana. They say that a Grand Opening will be coming soon. There will be a prayer breakfast and preview tour of the facility on Saturday, December 6, 2014 at 8 am. Continue reading→

If you are looking for a Christmas Eve church service in Santa Ana, here is a rundown of the events we were able to come up with:
Newsong Church of Irvine and Santa Ana’s First Baptist Church are still in escrow, as I understand it, but already there are plans for Newsong Santa Ana to join the congregation at First Baptist as of the service on Dec. 19, and the entire Irvine Newsong congregation will be coming to Santa Ana for a joint service on January 12, 2014.
First Baptist is a historic congregation in that this was the first Protestant church in Santa Ana, originally operating on land donated by the founder of this city, William Spurgeon. Over the years the congregation dwindled as folks moved away and began to pass away. Pastor Andy Quient reached out to Newsong’s Pastor Dave Gibbons when Newsong’s attempt to purchase the Santora Building, in Downtown Santa Ana, was rebuffed by the artists in DTSA. Continue reading→
