SANTA ANA – The City of Santa Ana’s 18th annual Cinco de Mayo Festival is taking place on Saturday, May 6 and Sunday, May 7, 2017. The festivities will begin at 12:00 p.m. each day on Fourth Street in historic Downtown Santa Ana. This annual tradition celebrates Santa Ana’s vibrant Mexican culture with live entertainment, including top level performers each night, delicious food, affordable shopping, interactive art activities, and exciting carnival rides for children of all ages. The festival will also include cultural art components throughout the event, as well as a Beer Garden which will be open for adults only to enjoy cold, refreshing beverages.

On Saturday, May 6, the festival’s main stage will feature the talented performances of various Ballet Folklórico and local school dance groups. The event’s international flavor will be brought to the stage through the impressive performances of professional Fandando, Salsa, Cha Cha and Flamenco dan cers. A second stage on the west end Fourth Street will also feature crossover performances by popular and upcoming local bands. The City of Santa Ana’s 17th Annual Cinco de Mayo Festival is taking place on Saturday, April 30th and Sunday, May 1st. The festivities begin at 12 noon each day on Fourth Street in historic Downtown Santa Ana. This annual tradition celebrates Santa Ana’s vibrant Mexican culture with live entertainment including top level performers each night, delicious food, affordable shopping, interactive art activities, and exciting carnival rides for children of all ages. The Festival will also include the “Plaza de la Cultura,” a visual art display commemorating the history of Cinco de Mayo as well as a beer garden (for adults only) to enjoy cold, refreshing beverages.

On Saturday, April 30th, the highly popular Kevin Ortiz will be performing on the Festival’s main stage. Kevin Ortiz is a Latin pop singer from Pasadena, California. The 16th Annual Cinco de Mayo Festival opens Friday, May 1st with the carnival rides and continues thru Sunday, May 3rd on Fourth Street in our historic Downtown Santa Ana. This year’s Festival will feature “La Reyna del Pueblo” Graciela Beltran, Latin Grammy winner Conjunto Primavera, La Banda Movida, along with many other live performances on the main stage.

The “AVOID the 38” DUI Taskforce is Cracking Down on Drunk Driving this Cinco de Mayo

SANTA ANA, California (May 2, 2014) – Cinco de Mayo is a time for many Californians to celebrate Mexican culture and heritage by attending parties, barbecues and festivals with friends and family. With alcohol being such a big part of these festivities, it’s no surprise that drunk driving is especially high on May 5th. In an effort to prevent any roadway tragedies, the Orange County “Avoid the 38” DUI Task Force is joining with others across the state and nation to remind partygoers that drunk driving should never be part of your Cinco de Mayo plans.

Special DUI saturations patrols will be deployed this weekend in numerous cities within Orange County looking to identify and stop suspected drunk drivers. Additionally, every routine traffic and patrol officer assigned to duty will be on heightened alert to prevent another senseless tragedy. Continue reading→

So Santa Ana now has an all-Latino City Council, a Latino City Manager and a Latino Chief of Police.  But why then are the cops still conducting DUI checkpoints that rarely catch drunk drivers and most often result in harassing immigrants?  And why are they still going after cruisers on Easter and Cinco de Mayo? And what is this business with putting immigrants in our city jail?

Not to mention all of these Latino city officials watching as our downtown gets cleansed of Latinos in order to mollify out of town hipsters.

In an effort to provide a safe environment and minimize the impact on our local neighborhoods, the Santa Ana Police Department will be deploying extra police personnel to deal with the influx of cruiser activity experienced on Cinco de Mayo (Monday, May 5th).

In years past, the City of Santa Ana has contended with large crowds, congested roadways, criminal activity, and quality of life issues that affect our residents, businesses and visitors. Therefore, to mitigate these issues, an increased police presence, lane restrictions and road closures will be in effect in the areas of Bristol Street from 17th Street to Callen’s Common, Main Street from 17th Street to Dyer Road, Edinger Avenue from Main Street to Raitt Street and Harbor Boulevard between Westminster Avenue and Edinger Avenue. Poll: Are hipsters turning Dia de Los Muertos into another drinking holiday?

In its 11th year, Noche de Altares (Night of the Altars), was expected to draw tens of thousands over nine hours with its entertainment stages, community-based vendors and more than 100 ofrendas (altars) dedicated to the memory of the deceased, according to the O.C. Register.

The event, which was held yesterday, “has become more commercialized, it is now a combination of an art exhibit and street fair,” according to the Santa Ana Sentinel, which also reported that “El día de los muertos was very much the theme of the night at the Santora where just about all of the galleries displayed artwork, photography, even clothing influenced by the day of the dead theme.”

But friends tell me that while they enjoyed the event, they also started to see major signs that hipsters are trying to turn this special cultural event into yet another Mexican drinking holiday, like Cinco de Mayo.  The OC Weekly saw this coming, running a Do’s and Don’ts article before the Noche de Altares event.  Here are a few excerpts from that article: Continue reading→

Should Santa Ana’s Cinco de Mayo and Fiestas Patrias be run by volunteers?

Did you know that Santa Ana’s popular Cinco de Mayo and Fiestas Patrias festivals used to be run by local businessmen and volunteers?  That was before the City of Santa Ana decided to hire a promoter, MX Live, to run these events.

But is MX Live really doing a good enough job to justify this corporate takeover?  Check out their website,their Facebook Page and the City’s website, and you will find that there is no mention of this year’s Fiestas Patrias, which are coming up in mid-September – just a few weeks from now.  What gives?
