Watch our goofy elected officials in today’s Fiestas Patrias parade in DTSA

I try not to miss the annual Fiestas Patrias parade in Downtown Santa Ana not because it is a great parade but rather because it always presents me with the opportunity to take goofy pictures of our local politicians.

A couple years ago I caught career politician Janet Nguyen (who at the time was a Supervisor and is now a State Senator) dangling her unsecured toddler while sitting on the back seat of a convertible car (see the picture above). If only I had been taking video! She was screaming “Viva Mexico” at the time. (I am sure her fellow Republicans would love to see that video today!). Continue reading→

Supervisor Todd Spitzer Announces Plan to Place OC City and Military Flags at the OC Civic Center

This week at the Board of Supervisors meeting, Supervisor Spitzer requested that the County members of the Civic Center Joint Power Authority seek to replace the 50 state flags in the Plaza of the Flags with the flags of Orange County’s 34 cities, the County flag, the State flag, the U.S. flag, and the flags of the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, and Coast Guard.

The request was made by Supervisor Spitzer to remove the Confederate Flag from flying in the Civic Center and to help build unity amongst the County and the cities. The Confederate Flag is currently part of the flag of the State of Mississippi. To many, the Confederate Flag represents one of the darkest and most shameful eras in the history of our country. Is the City of Santa Ana trying to drive the homeless out of the Civic Center?

For over 25 years we have served hot meals to the homeless gathered in the Civic Center, Santa Ana’s public square. During that time we have also invited women and children to stay in our home; currently over 50 adult women live and dine with us as guests. Many Catholics are unaware that our right to perform those Works of Mercy required by the Greatest Commandment has been abridged in the past and might well be again.

In 2003 the City of Santa Ana threatened to fine our landlord $1000 per day and arrest us for violating the “Mission Ordinance.” This ordinance made serving meals or offering lodging in one’s home illegal, except for profit as a business. We were cited first for offering bread to our neighbors, and for violating the Mission ordinance, and threatened with a year in jail if we failed to evict children and their parents from our home. We declined to do so, and only the intervention of Bishop Soto and a coalition of local pro bono attorneys gained for us an agreement for our continued operation. Continue reading→

Christmas Eve Clothes and Blanket Donations to Civic Center Homeless

(Santa Ana, CA) – Orange County Supervisor Todd Spitzer is teaming up with OC Community Services/Homeless Prevention and the Orange County Health Care Agency to distribute 120 sets of clothing and blankets donated by a generous 3rd District anonymous constituent to homeless individuals on Christmas Eve.

The distribution will take place at the Orange Civic Center Plaza on Tuesday, December 24, 2013 from 10:00 a.m. until 10:30 am until all clothing has been distributed. Continue reading→

Will inmates break out with no power at the Santa Ana jail?

UPDATED: Two circuits were damaged. The first circuit was restored — 681 customers initially. One customer remains off. There were 1,082 customers impacted by the loss of the second circuit. All customers remain off.. Restoration at approx 9pm. A car hit a pole causing the power lines to come down.

Green Fair to Spotlight Eco-Friendly Products
Student Art to Illustrate “Going Green” Campaign

(Santa Ana, CA)—Community members are invited to attend the first County of Orange Green Fair, a free event that will showcase eco-friendly products and services, to be held Thursday, May 20 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Santa Ana Civic Center, 333 W. Santa Ana Boulevard.

The Fair will feature displays from more than 50 vendors, whose sponsorships make it possible to stage the event at no expense to taxpayers while providing door prizes and other giveaway items to visitors.
