Every year on Easter Sunday SAPD puts our city on lockdown in an attempt to keep us in our homes and limit cruising. They block off all the major streets making it hard to move around Santa Ana. The irony is that they say it’s to prevent “grid-lock”. They also have extra police pulling over anyone they can for any reason they can come up with. Our Easter Sunday basically becomes Santa Ana Martial Law.
The real reason for these actions by the city and the police is rooted in racism and their need to suppress a popular gathering of the people. In other words, they don’t want brown people gathering in the streets. Continue reading

Elvia Fernandez, a Santa Ana mom, is having trouble processing what she saw happen today at John Adams Park, in Santa Ana. She videotaped a burly Santa Ana Unified School District Police Officer who jumped on top of a kid he caught tagging at the park. Allegedly the cop threatened to pepper spray the kid.
According to eyewitnesses the child was perhaps fourteen years old. You can hear him crying in the video that Elvia shot. And the cop clearly shouts at Elvia and another bystander – demanding that they stop speaking in Spanish. They were telling the child to stop struggling and were trying to calm him down. Santa Ana’s police officers are not among the highest paid cops in Orange County, according to a new study commissioned by The Association of California Cities of Orange County.
The Orange County Sheriff’s Department, which provides service to a dozen cities as well as the unincorporated areas of the county, came in number two on a list ranking O.C.’s police departments — in order of total compensation, according to the O.C. Register. The top base monthly salary for sheriff’s deputies was $7,308, with total comp of $13,968.
The top base monthly salary for Santa Ana’s cops is $7,039 per month and their total compensation comes to $12,348. Continue reading
Imagine if you will that instead of an unarmed Manuel “Stomper” Diaz getting chased down and shot in the back, the victim had been some random white skateboarder in Anaheim Hills? And what if the shooter had been a Latino cop? Oh my. What a different outcome we would have – or would we?
The O.C. Register today asked for calm in Anaheim, opining “The Register’s Editorial Board urges calm and healing at this time of division in the community. We believe a small minority may feel there is something to be gained by inciting further violent confrontations. UPDATE: DA TONY RACKAUCKAS HAS CHARGED 2 FULLERTON POLICE OFFICERS IN CONNECTION WITH KELLY THOMAS’ DEATH
FPD officer Manuel Ramos will be charged with second-degree murder and involuntary manslaughter. Ramos faces up to 15 years to life in prison.
Cpl. Jay Cicinelli will be charged with involuntary manslaughter and use of excessive force. He faces up to four years in prison.
They will be arraigned at 2PM this afternoon at the courthouse in downtown Santa Ana.

Correa’s Bill to Train Law Enforcement Officers to Identify Post-War Mental Illnesses Passes Senate Unanimously
SACRAMENTO, CA – The California State Senate this week unanimously approved Senate Bill 1296 (SB 1296) introduced by Senator Lou Correa (Orange County). This legislative measure would require the Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) in collaboration with the California Department of Veterans Affairs (CDVA), to assess the training needed by peace officers on the topic of returning veterans or other persons suffering from traumatic brain injury (TBI) or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). SB 1296 directs POST to create a course for peace officers who are emergency first responders on how to recognize and interact with persons suffering from TBI or PTSD, and requires that the course be made available to law enforcement agencies in California.
