OC Fair Express Kicks off July 11 From Eight Locations

New mobile app allows riders to buy tickets in advance, $2 each way and $3 fair admission

ORANGE – The Orange County Transportation Authority is bringing back the OC Fair Express bus service with locations across the county for just $2 each way, allowing riders to save time and money.

The OC Fair Express will provide non-stop weekend bus service from eight locations to the OC Fair from July 11 to Aug. 10. Buses will run hourly between noon and midnight on Fridays and 9:30 a.m. and midnight on Saturdays and Sundays. Continue reading→

Free Youth Baseball Clinic Costa Mesa July 12 with Ex-Big Leaguers Grich, Bailey, Rettenmund

COSTA MESA – The Hanover Insurance Group Inc. is partnering with Wood Gutmann & Bogart Insurance Brokers and The Major League Baseball Players Alumni Association (MLBPAA) to host a free “Legends for Youth” baseball clinic on Saturday, July 12, 2014, from 9 a.m. to noon at Vanguard University Baseball Field in Costa Mesa.

Former All-Stars, including Bobby Grich, Jerry Spradlin, Bob Bailey, Merv Rettenmund and Mike Gallo, will serve as instructors at the clinic. Approximately 250 children, ages 6-16, are expected to attend. Continue reading→

PAROLEE SENTENCED TO SEVEN YEARS AND FOUR MONTHS IN PRISON FOR STEALING OVER $280,000 FROM BLIND, DEAF 98-YEAR-OLD WIDOW SUFFERING FROM DEMENTIA TO BUY TIFFANY’S RING AND SEX SWING

SANTA ANA – A parolee from Vermont was convicted and sentenced today to seven years and four months in state prison for stealing over $280,000 from a 98-year-old widow. John Thomas Windsor, 44, Costa Mesa, pleaded guilty to one felony count each of first degree residential burglary, caretaker theft from an elder, fraudulently using an access card, and three felony counts of forgery with sentencing enhancements and allegations causing over $100,000 in loss, aggravated white collar crime over $100,000, and property loss over $200,000. Windsor was also ordered to pay $296,000 in restitution and fined over $592,000. Continue reading→

Costa Mesa, Calif. (May 2, 2014) – “Summer Starts Here” at the 2014 OC Fair from July 11-August 10, offering Fairgoers impressive discounts and deals during the Fair.

The most affordable option for Fairgoers is the OC Fair Super Pass, which grants passholders 23-day access to the 2014 Fair, express entry at all gates, a free 2014 OC Fair souvenir pin, a carnival value book and 2-for-1 tickets for select events at the Pacific Amphitheatre, The Hangar and Action Sports Arena. ACLU to speak about homelessnesss in the OC on 3/18 in Costa Mesa

In Orange County, thousands of persons experience homelessness in a given year. Many remain homeless because they cannot access affordable housing, permanent supportive housing, medical care or benefits. Due to the lack of year-round emergency shelter, many homeless individuals are forced to live in public spaces and face criminal penalties for engaging in necessary activities – like sleeping in public – that are a direct result of their homeless status.

El Centro Cultural de Mexico to host a Day Laborer Victory Party on Feb. 22

The victory of day laborers in Costa Mesa will be honored at El Centro Cultural de Mexico on Saturday, February 22, 2014 from 5 to 9 pm. They are located at 313 N. Birch Street in Downtown Santa Ana.

The City of Costa Mesa passed a law prohibiting the solicitation of work (10-354) in Dec. of 2005. Day laborers continued to resist the ordinance by congregating at Corners of Resistance, and people from the Tonantzin Collective monitored police behavior at the corners. This policy was combined with an agreement to have immigration officers in the Costa Mesa Police Station. In Sept. of 2009, 12 day laborers were picked up by undercover Costa Mesa police disguised as employers. All 12 were arrested and booked for the “crime” of looking for work. All 12 of them were later turned over to ICE custody and deported since they were undocumented. Continue reading→

OC Fair Imaginology Event Challenges Students to Go “Full S.T.E.A.M. Ahead” With Free Competitions

(February 11, 2014) – The OC Fair & Event Center’s Imaginology event is challenging local students to demonstrate their abilities in the S.T.E.A.M. curriculum (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) with a variety of free competitions. MAN SENTENCED TO DEATH AFTER BEING LINKED THROUGH DNA TO 1988 COLD CASE SEXUAL ASSAULT-MURDER OF YOUNG PREGNANT NEWLYWED

SANTA ANA – A man was sentenced to death today for the 1988 cold case sexual assault-murder of a pregnant 22-year-old newlywed after being linked to the crime through DNA. Jason Balcom, 43, was found guilty by a jury March 12, 2012, of one felony count of special circumstances murder during the commission of rape, sodomy, robbery, and burglary. He was recommended to receive the death penalty by a jury during a second penalty phase trial on Feb. 28, 2013. A mistrial was declared in the first penalty phase trial on March 27, 2012.

In July 1988, 22-year-old Malinda Gibbons and her husband Kent Gibbons moved to Costa Mesa from Utah. On the morning of July 18, 1988, Kent Gibbons left for work and Malinda Gibbons, who was between four and six weeks pregnant, stayed home to unpack in their new apartment. Continue reading→
