SANTA ANA – A man was sentenced today to 15 years to life in state prison for murdering a victim by hitting him in the head and face with the handle of an axe before fleeing the scene in the victim’s car. Jorge Santiago Avalos, 27, was found guilty by a jury Oct. 18, 2013, of one felony count of second degree murder. A previous jury was unable to reach a unanimous verdict in April 2012. SANTA ANA – A man was sentenced today to 66 years to life in state prison for sexually assaulting five females, including raping a 14-year-old and 17-year-old girl, after giving them alcohol. Max Danilo Martinez, 33, Corona, was found guilty by a jury Aug. 5, 2013, of three felony counts of forcible rape, one felony count of sexual penetration by foreign object by force, one felony count of rape of an unconscious person, and sentencing enhancement allegations for sexual crimes against multiple victims. Santa Ana Police Department Advisory: Police arrest Cat Burglar and provide holiday safety tips
On Thursday December 19th at 8:15 PM Officers responded to a call of a Cat Burglary in the 3200 block of South Main Street. The female victim advised she and her husband heard a suspect enter their bedroom through an open window. When the victim checked her bedroom, she saw her purse and two cell phones were missing. Further investigation revealed the suspect had entered the victim’s apartment via a bedroom window that was slightly open.
Responding officers were able to set up a perimeter around the apartment complex. Orange County Sheriff’s Department Airship “Duke” responded and was able to direct the officers to the suspect who was taken into custody without incident. Continue reading

JURY DETERMINED SERIAL CHILD MOLESTER SHOULD REMAIN CIVILLY COMMITTED AS SEXUALLY VIOLENT PREDATOR
SANTA ANA – A jury determined today that serial child molester Sid Landau, 74, is a continued threat to children and the community and should remain civilly committed as a Sexually Violent Predator (SVP).
Under the law, potential SVPs are subject to mental health reviews prior to completion of their criminal sentence. If the People are able to prove that the defendant meets SVP criteria, a petition is filed to have the defendant civilly committed. There are three criteria that must be met; first, the defendant must have committed a sexually violent offense. Second, he must be diagnosed with a mental disorder. Finally, it must be found that he is likely to re-offend unless he is held in custody and treated. Continue reading

Winter Holiday DUI Campaign Update – DUI Arrests Down & No DUI Fatalities
SANTA ANA, California (December 17, 2013) – The Winter Holiday Anti-DUI crackdown has resulted in a significant number of DUI arrests from local routine traffic enforcement and special ‘Avoid the 38’ DUI Task Force deployments over the weekend in Orange County.
From 12:01 a.m. on Friday, December 13 through midnight Sunday December 15 officers representing 38 county law enforcement agencies have arrested 209 individuals for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. In 2012, 227 DUI arrests occurred during the same three (3) day time period. There were no DUI deaths over the weekend. SANTA ANA – Law enforcement is seeking the public’s help identifying potential additional victims of a man charged with sexually assaulting two women in a mall and church parking lot. Raymond Boykin, 18, Anaheim, is charged with one felony count each of forcible oral copulation, second degree robbery, unlawful taking of a vehicle, evading while driving recklessly, two felony counts of assault with the intent to commit a sexual offense, and sentencing enhancements and allegations for the personal use of a deadly weapon. If convicted, he faces a maximum sentence of 27 years to life in state prison. Boykin is being held on $1 million bail and is expected to be arraigned tomorrow, Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2013, in Department CJ-1, Central Jail, Santa Ana. The time is to be determined. Continue reading
Two men were forced off the road, robbed and carjacked by armed bandits midday Saturday, according to the Santa Ana Police Department. The victims were driving in the 4700 block of West 1st Street at around 11:30 a.m. when a gray Toyota Camry cut them off, said Sgt. Richard Shin with the Santa Ana Police Department, as reported by the O.C. Register.
The robbers took a total of $1,200 from the two occupants of the Chevy Silverado, at gunpoint. Neither victim was hurt in the exchange. Continue reading

The Board of Education appointed Hector Rodriguez, Ed.D. during the December 10, 2013 Board meeting. “I’m truly excited to have the opportunity to help build upon the accomplishments of former Chief David Valentin and the strong reputation the current officers of the Santa Ana Unified School District Police Department have worked so hard to establish. SANTA ANA – A man and woman pleaded guilty today to murdering a 55-year-old man after following the victim home from Hawaiian Gardens Casino to rob him of $10,000 in gambling winnings. Tad Allen Carroll, 45, formerly of Buena Park, pleaded guilty today to one felony count of first degree murder. Barbara Ann Hamel, 50, Long Beach, pleaded guilty today to second degree murder. Carroll is expected to be sentenced to 25 years to life in state prison and Hamel is expected to be sentenced to 15 years to life in state prison at their sentencing Feb. 21, 2014, at 9:00 a.m. in Department C-40, Central Justice Center, Santa Ana. Santa Ana Police Department Advisory: Arrest details in Santa Ana Mall robbery/sexual assault arrest
On December 11th, Santa Ana Police investigated the reported attack of a 19 year old woman who was robbed and sexually assaulted in a mall parking structure. Officers responded to reports of a robbery at the Westfield MainPlace mall, at 530 PM. The victim told the officers that as she was getting into her car a man pushed her into the vehicle, brandished a knife and sexually assaulted her. The victim told officers that she was able to escape and that as she ran for help the suspect stole some of her property and fled on foot.
Detectives took over the case and during their initial investigation of mall security tape they located a video from the Verizon store located in the mall. On this video detectives observed the suspect later identified as as 18 year-old Raymund Martin Daniel Boykin (DOB: 08-15-95) / Residence Unknown was in possession of the victim’s purse. Boykin had entered the Verizon store after committing the robbery/sexual assault and was using the victim’s cash money to purchase a cell phone. Detectives also learned that the suspect had been in the same store prior to committing the crime and had attempted to purchase the same type phone however was lacking $20.00 to complete the purchase. WESTMINSTER – A former school maintenance painter is scheduled to be arraigned Monday for possessing child pornography on his computer and distributing it through the Internet. Roger Scott Hewson, 51, Fountain Valley, is charged with one felony count of distributing obscene matter and one felony count of possession and control of child pornography. If convicted, he faces a maximum sentence off three years and eight months in state prison and mandatory lifetime sex offender registration. He is out of custody on $100,000 bail and is scheduled to be arraigned Monday, Dec. 16, 2013, at 8:30 a.m. in Department W-2, West Justice Center, Westminster. Continue reading
Police are investigating a reported attack in a mall parking structure on Wednesday night in which a woman told authorities she was robbed and sexually assaulted.
Officers responded about 5:30 p.m. to reports of a robbery at the Westfield MainPlace mall, Santa Ana. SYNOPSIS: On 12/3/13 at about 1:20 PM, the above listed suspect entered the Don Roberto’s Jewelry store and contacted a sales person under the pretense of purchasing a ring. As the sales person was showing the suspect various rings, the suspect produced a black semi-auto handgun from his waistband. The suspect ordered the sales clerk back and removed several rings from the display. The suspect then exited the business and fled eastbound on 17th St. Continue reading

29 MEN CONVICTED OF LOITERING, SOLICITING, OR AGREEING TO ENGAGE IN PROSTITUTION IN NOVEMBER
SANTA ANA – The Orange County District Attorney’s Office (OCDA) convicted 29 men of loitering, soliciting, or agreeing to engage in prostitution in November 2013. The defendants in these cases approached a woman, whom they believed to be a prostitute, in areas known for prostitution in Orange County. They agreed to engage in commercial sex, loitered with intent to commit prostitution, or solicited another to engage in prostitution with a woman or an undercover officer and were subsequently arrested by law enforcement.
Garden Grove Police Department, Orange County Sheriff’s Department, and Santa Ana Police Department investigated these cases. Deputy District Attorney Michael Bardeen of the HEAT Unit prosecuted these cases. Continue reading
