SAPD performed an illegal fireworks enforcement operation and confiscated approximately 300 pounds of illegal fireworks and issued two(2) $1,000 fine administrative citations.

The Santa Ana Police Department will be conducting a DUI/Drivers License checkpoint on Friday, June 17th, 2016 It will begin at 9:00PM and is scheduled to conclude at 3:00AM. It will be conducted in the area of 2400 W. Fifth Street, in the City of Santa Ana.
The primary purpose of a DUI Checkpoint is to deter impaired driving, not to increase arrests. All too often, members of our community are senselessly injured or killed on local roadways by impaired drivers. This DUI/Drivers License checkpoint is an effort to reduce those tragedies, as well as ensuring drivers have a valid driver’s license. The DMV reports that unlicensed drivers are 4.9 times more likely to cause a fatal crash than a licensed driver. Continue reading→
Ramiro Garcia Jr., a 23-year-old driver from Santa Ana, has been sentenced to four years in prison for a hit-and-run crash in Santa Ana that killed a pedestrian, according to the O.C. Register.
Garcia Jr. pleaded guilty on Monday to one felony count of hit-and-run with serious injury for the fatal Jan. 24 collision, according to court records. Continue reading→

DEFENDANT CONVICTED OF SHOOTING AND MURDERING ONE MAN AND ATTEMPTED MURDER OF TWO WOMEN
SANTA ANA, Calif. – A Garden Grove man was convicted today of shooting and murdering a man and attempting to murder two women in Santa Ana. Dustin Sean Ross McDonald, 24, was found guilty by a jury of one felony count of first degree murder, two felony counts of attempted murder with premeditation and deliberation, and sentencing enhancements for the personal discharge of a firearm causing death or great bodily injury. He faces a maximum sentence of 114 years to life in state prison at his sentencing Aug. 26, 2016, at 9:00 a.m. in Department C-30, Central Justice Center Santa Ana.
On Aug. 12, 2014, McDonald arranged to meet with the three victims in Santa Ana for a drug transaction. At approximately 11:30 p.m. that night, the defendant drove up to the victim’s vehicle in the area of 12th Street and Main Street, stepped out of his vehicle, walked around to the front passenger side of the victims’ vehicle while armed with a firearm, and fired approximately 10 shots. McDonald murdered the front passenger, 23-year-old Aaron Chavez, and wounded both the 21-year-old female driver of the vehicle and the 28-year-old female passenger. Continue reading→

SANTA ANA, Calif. – A felon was arraigned today for trafficking a woman from the state of Washington and pimping her by using a firearm to force her to solicit commercial sex. Timogen Anthony Simpson, 27, Kent, Washington, is charged with one felony count each of human trafficking, pimping, pandering, criminal threats, assault with force likely to produce great bodily injury, possession of a firearm by felon, convicted felon having a concealed firearm in a vehicle, one misdemeanor count of false imprisonment, one misdemeanor count of driving on a suspended or revoked license, and sentencing enhancements for being armed with a firearm while committing criminal threats, and a prior strike conviction for second degree robbery in 2009 and a prior prison conviction for second degree identity theft in 2011, both in King County in the state of Washington. If convicted, he faces a maximum sentence of over 40 years in state prison. He is being held on $1 million bail and must prove the money is from a legal and legitimate source before posting bond. Simpson was arraigned today and is scheduled for a pre-trial hearing June 21, 2016, at 8:30 a.m. in Department N-3, North Justice Center, Fullerton. Continue reading→
An unidentified man was stabbed in the arm with an unknown object as he walked near The Triangle Shopping Center at 19th Street and Harbor Boulevard early this morning, at around 1:40 a.m., according to the O.C. Register.
The incident was not immediately reported to police, according to the Costa Mesa Police. In fact the victim drove himself to the nearby Hoag Hospital, where he is in stable condition.
Apparently the victim was walking near the Triangle Shopping Center when two male suspects approached him and they indicated that they wanted to fight him. Continue reading→
Leonardo Morales, a 23-year-old Santa Ana man pleaded guilty Friday to a drunken driving crash in which the SUV he was driving erupted into flames just before two California Highway Patrol officers rescued him, a woman and their two young children, according to the O.C. Register.
Morales admitted to single counts apiece of several felonies including driving under the influence of alcohol causing injury and driving with a blood-alcohol level exceeding the legal limit of .08 percent or more causing injury as well as two counts of child abuse and endangerment. Irvine, CA – The Irvine Police Department (IPD) has arrested a man following a vehicle pursuit. The suspect is identified as Carl Gonzalez, 33, of Santa Ana. He was arrested on charges including evading a police officer, obstructing/resisting a peace officer, hit and run causing property damage, possession of a controlled substance, and possession of controlled substance paraphernalia. At the time of his arrest, the suspect was on parole.
At approximately 3:30 a.m. today, June 8, 2016, an Irvine Police officer attempted a vehicle stop in the area of Harvard Avenue and Warner Avenue. The driver of the vehicle failed to yield and the officer initiated a short pursuit. Continue reading→
County Efforts Continue to Target Worker’s Compensation Fraud
(Santa Ana, CA) — An ongoing effort by the County of Orange to target suspected instances of worker’s compensation fraud resulted in the arrest this week of a man who claimed to have been disabled after an on-the-job vehicle accident.
While completing community service hours for an earlier DUI conviction, Bartolo Hernandez Orona was a passenger in a County truck in August 2009 when the driver hit a tree. In 2014, he filed a worker’s compensation claim for injuries, claiming to be completely disabled by the accident after having undergone two back surgeries.
He is accused of seeking work between November 2014 and August 2015 as a day laborer and observed moving furniture down a flight of stairs, gardening and riding a bicycle. Continue reading→
Erika Rubi Hernandez Valeriano, a 41-year-old transient woman, pleaded not guilty today to two charges of arson, after she allegedly set fires in two stores while she stole shopping carts loaded with goods, according to the O.C. Register.
The first arson/shoplifting crime happened on Oct. 4, 2015 at the Santa Ana Walmart that is located at 3600 W. McFadden Ave. and the second crime happened on May 30 at the El Super Market located at 2445 S. Bristol St., according to the OCFA. Continue reading→

SANTA ANA, Calif. – A man was sentenced today to 14 years in state prison for the human trafficking, pimping, and pandering of a woman, and attempting to pimp another woman by threatening both victims. The defendant received nearly $50,000 from the trafficking of one of the victims. Johnny Lee Guyton Jr., 46, Henderson, Nevada, was found guilty by a jury on May 17, 2016, of one felony count of human trafficking, one felony count of pimping, two felony counts of pandering, and one felony count of attempted pimping. Guyton also received mandatory lifetime sex offender registration as a term of his sentence.
On April 21, 2015, Guyton was charged in case 15NF1059 with two felony counts of human trafficking, two felony counts of pimping, two felony counts of pandering. This case was subsequently consolidated with case 15NF2346. Continue reading→
Sheriff Hutchens Addresses Jail Special Handling Log
SANTA ANA, Ca. (June 09, 2016) – Today in court there was discussion of the jail informant notes and special handling/classification log. I want to provide the public with some background as to the discovery of the log and the steps that have been put in place to ensure this doesn’t occur in the future.
In February 2016, one day prior to a hearing on the Henry Rodriguez case, we were provided personal notes kept by an Orange County Sheriff’s deputy. This deputy worked in the Special Handling Unit. These notes were not part of our general documentation practice and protocol for record keeping in the jail. The discovery of these notes were shared with the court and the Department of Justice. *OCDA sets out concrete action plans to remedy OCSD’s previous nonproduction of documents
SANTA ANA, Calif. – The Orange County District Attorney (OCDA) today turned over to the court a complete copy of the newly obtained Special Handling Log (SH Log) from the Orange County Sheriff’s Department (OCSD), and filed briefs to seal privileged data and request a court hearing to turn over discovery to the defense in the People v. Scott Dekraai. In May 2016, hearings in People v. Daniel Wozniak were held in the Honorable John D. Conley’s courtroom to confirm that the defense is being given all the materials to which they are entitled, and portions of recently-uncovered set of jail records were produced to defendant Wozniak by the OCSD in response to third-party subpoenas served on OCSD by the defense.
During the recent May court hearings in Wozniak, the OCSD custodian of records testified that OCSD management and command staff previously knew nothing of the existence of a set of jail records called the SH Log described in court as a daily activity log of the jail’s special handling deputies. Correspondingly, the OCDA did not know of the existence of this set of jail records. Continue reading→
