DEFENDANT CONVICTED OF SHOOTING AND MURDERING ONE MAN AND ATTEMPTED MURDER OF TWO WOMEN
SANTA ANA, Calif. – A Garden Grove man was convicted today of shooting and murdering a man and attempting to murder two women in Santa Ana. Dustin Sean Ross McDonald, 24, was found guilty by a jury of one felony count of first degree murder, two felony counts of attempted murder with premeditation and deliberation, and sentencing enhancements for the personal discharge of a firearm causing death or great bodily injury. He faces a maximum sentence of 114 years to life in state prison at his sentencing Aug. 26, 2016, at 9:00 a.m. in Department C-30, Central Justice Center Santa Ana.
On Aug. 12, 2014, McDonald arranged to meet with the three victims in Santa Ana for a drug transaction. At approximately 11:30 p.m. that night, the defendant drove up to the victim’s vehicle in the area of 12th Street and Main Street, stepped out of his vehicle, walked around to the front passenger side of the victims’ vehicle while armed with a firearm, and fired approximately 10 shots. McDonald murdered the front passenger, 23-year-old Aaron Chavez, and wounded both the 21-year-old female driver of the vehicle and the 28-year-old female passenger. Continue reading→

Community: Free DTSA Lunch Trolley Set to Begin on Tuesday
The City of Santa Ana and the Downtown Santa Ana (DTSA) Restaurant Association are happy to announce the launch of the DTSA Lunch Trolley on Tuesday, June 7th. The free trolley service will operate Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 11:30 am-1:30 pm.
The trolley will provide an alternative transportation option for Civic Center visitors and staff who would like to explore the many dining options downtown, without having to drive or worry about looking for parking. Community Alert: Downtown Mural Project – Call for Artist
The City of Santa Ana announces the “Downtown Mural Project,” an exciting opportunity for artists to contribute to the continued development of the City’s historic downtown. As part of a broader garage improvement plan, which also includes the installation of LED lighting and automated payment equipment, the City will make available $50,000 for artists to create murals on public parking garage façades. These funds are available to assist with project-related expenses, such as materials, liability insurance, city permits, and artist’s fees. Community: 2016 Cinco de Mayo Festival / Festival Anual de Cinco de Mayo
The City of Santa Ana’s 17th Annual Cinco de Mayo Festival is taking place on Saturday, April 30th and Sunday, May 1st. The festivities begin at 12 noon each day on Fourth Street in historic Downtown Santa Ana. This annual tradition celebrates Santa Ana’s vibrant Mexican culture with live entertainment including top level performers each night, delicious food, affordable shopping, interactive art activities, and exciting carnival rides for children of all ages. The Festival will also include the “Plaza de la Cultura,” a visual art display commemorating the history of Cinco de Mayo as well as a beer garden (for adults only) to enjoy cold, refreshing beverages.

Vanessa Elizabeth Rodriguez, a 25-year-old woman, was killed late Wednesday night in a gang-related shooting inside a residential garage behind a Catholic church the west alley of the 700 block of North Lacy Street, according to the O.C. Register.
The SAPD said that two suspects entered an alley, pulled open a garage door and began shooting at the three people inside, hitting all of them, according to ABC News.

MAN TO BE ARRAIGNED FOR STABBING-MURDER OF CONCERT ATTENDEE DURING LIVE PERFORMANCE
SANTA ANA, Calif. – A man is expected to be arraigned today for stabbing and murdering a concert attendee in Santa Ana during a live performance. Juan Angel Rivera, 21, Santa Ana, is charged with one felony count of murder with a sentencing enhancement for the personal use of a knife. If convicted, he faces a maximum sentence of 26 years to life in state prison. The People will request he be held on $1 million bail at his arraignment expected this afternoon in Department CJ-1, Central Jail, Santa Ana. The time is to be determined.
On the evening of March 3, 2016, Rivera is accused of attending a performance at Underground DTSA in Santa Ana where a band was performing. At approximately 10:30 p.m. as a band was performing, the defendant is accused of getting into a confrontation with 23-year-old Nathan Alfaro. During the confrontation, Rivera is accused of pulling out a knife and stabbing Alfaro multiple times in the torso. Rivera is accused of leaving the venue with several other people. The victim was transported to University of California, Irvine Medical Center where he died as a result of the multiple stab wounds. Continue reading→

Supervisors Will Discuss Potential for New 20-Year Orange County Civic Center Master Plan
An ambitious 20-year master plan that proposes to revamp and reorganize County government services within the Orange County Civic Center in Santa Ana will be presented for review on Tuesday, February 23, during a special study session before the Board of Supervisors.
The proposal was developed by a working group that includes Supervisor Andrew Do, First District, and Supervisor Shawn Nelson, Fourth District, as well as County Executive Officer Frank Kim and members of his executive team. We reported on Jan. 28 that Career College of California, which was located in DTSA, closed down. For whatever reason the mainstream media has completely ignored this story. And Career College has not issued a formal press release explaining why they shut their doors.
However Career College’s CEO, Caleb Everett, contacted me yesterday with more information about what they have done to help their students to move on to other schools.
Career College has posted an their website that they closed down because “their expenses were greater than their revenues.” Apparently they lost their funding as well and could not continue to stay in business. Continue reading→

Santa Ana Transit Terminal Open to Homeless During Storm
(Santa Ana, CA) – Eighty homeless individuals were housed Saturday evening at the Santa Ana Transit Terminal during Saturday evening rains, the first activation of the temporary shelter since its use was approved Friday by the Board of Supervisors.
“It is critical that we make emergency shelter available to those most vulnerable during severe rain events,” commented Orange County Board of Supervisors’ Chairwoman Lisa Bartlett as she toured the shelter on Sunday. “I am proud to say we made it happen.” Continue reading→
Supervisors Approve Temporary Shelter for Homeless during Rains
A plan to provide emergency shelter beds for the homeless during El Niño rainstorms at the unused Santa Ana Transit Terminal was approved Friday by the Board of Supervisors in a special meeting held so the beds could be prepared before expected weekend rain.
By a unanimous vote of those attending, Board of Supervisors Chairwoman Lisa Bartlett, Vice Chair Michelle Steel and Supervisor Shawn Nelson approved an interim lease with the Orange County Transportation Authority for short-term use of the terminal.
