WOMAN TO BE ARRAIGNED FOR LOSING CONTROL OF SUV WHILE DUI OF ALCOHOL KILLING ONE PASSENGER AND CAUSING MAJOR INJURIES TO ANOTHER

WESTMINSTER – A woman will be arraigned tomorrow for driving under the influence of alcohol and losing control of her sport utility vehicle (SUV) that killed one passenger and left another passenger with major injuries. Shauna Nalani Ahyen,22, Wailuku, Hawaii, is charged with one felony count each of vehicular manslaughter by lawful act that might cause deathwith gross negligence while intoxicated, driving under the influence causing bodily injury, driving with a blood alcoholcontent of .08 percent or more causing bodily injury with a sentencing enhancement for causing great bodily injury. Ifconvicted, she faces a maximum sentence of 13 years and eight months in state prison. Ahyen is scheduled to be arraignedtomorrow, Friday, Sept. 13, 2013, at 8:30 a.m. in Department W-2, West Justice Center, Westminster. Continue reading→

Summer / Labor Day Holiday “Avoid the 38” DUI Campaign – Monday Update

SANTA ANA, California – (August 19, 2013) – The Summer/Labor Day National Anti-DUI crackdown has resulted in a significant number of DUI arrests from routine traffic enforcement and special “Avoid the 38” Task Force DUI deployments.

During the enforcement period of Friday, August 16, 2013 at 12:01 a.m. through Sunday August 18, 2013 at 11:59 a.m., officers representing 38 county law enforcement agencies have arrested 149 individuals for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.  No DUI fatalities were reported.   In 2012, 153 DUI arrests occurred during the same three (3) day time period. SANTA ANA – A drunken driver will be arraigned today for killing his brother and injuring his nephew by crashing his truck while driving at an unsafe speed. Felix Jacobo Brito, 37, Costa Mesa, is charged with one felony count of vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated without gross negligence, one felony count of driving under the influence causing bodily injury, one misdemeanor count of driving a motor vehicle without a valid license, and sentencing enhancements and allegations for causing bodily injury and death to more than one victim and causing great bodily injury. If convicted, he faces a maximum sentence of seven years in state prison. Brito is being held on $100,000 bail and is scheduled to be arraigned today, Wednesday, March 13, 2013, in Department CJ-1, Central Jail, Santa Ana. The time is to be determined. Continue reading→

Santa Ana Police Department Advisory: Fatal Collision 1200 S. Fairview – driver arrested suspicion of drunk driving and vehicular manslaughter.

On 3/11/13 at approximately 0032 hours, 37 year old Costa Mesa Resident Felix Jacobo Brito was driving southbound on Fairview Street from McFadden. Brito lost control of his vehicle and veered off the roadway into an adjacent flood control channel. As a result of the collision, one of the passengers was ejected from the vehicle and was declared deceased at the scene. Brito and a third occupant were transported to a local hospital for treatment. SANTA ANA – A drunken driver was sentenced today to 15 years in state prison for injuring a mother and her 2-year-old daughter and hitting three others by crashing into them as they were walking on the sidewalk. Miguel Angel Sandoval, 44, Santa Ana, was found guilty by a jury June 5, 2012, of one felony count each of driving under the influence causing bodily injury, driving with a blood alcohol content of over .08 percent causing bodily injury, and two felony counts of mayhem, with sentencing enhancements and allegations for causing bodily injury to multiple victims, causing great bodily injury to Claudia G., causing great bodily injury to a child under 5 years old, and two prior felony convictions for commercial burglary in 2003. City Council to honor Jimenez for stopping alleged DUI hit and run driver

When Santa Ana resident Beatriz Jimenez saw alleged DUI driver Jessica Louise Cowan plow through the Meza family, last Saturday morning, killing 5-year-old Osmara Meza, she had to make a quick decision.  She wanted to stop to help, but she saw that Cowan wasn’t stopping, so she pursued her and ended up using her car to block Cowan’s escape, over at Main and 17th.

Jimenez is still having nightmares about what happened.  And she is coming to terms with the fact that she is now a hero.  Santa Ana Council Member Michele Martinez posted today on her Facebook page that she and Santa Ana Council Member Vincent Sarmiento will be honoring Jimenez at the next Santa Ana City Council meeting. DRUNKEN DRIVER CHARGED WITH MURDERING 5-YEAR-OLD GIRL AND INJURING SISTER AND MOTHER BY DRIVING THROUGH RED LIGHT AND CRASHING IN CROSSWALK

SANTA ANA – A drunken driver was charged today with murdering a 5-year-old girl and severely injuring the child’s sister and mother by crashing into them in a crosswalk after driving through a red light. Jessicah Louise Cowan, 33, Lake Hughes, is charged with one felony count each of murder, driving under the influence of alcohol causing bodily injury, driving with a blood alcohol level over .08 percent causing bodily injury, hit and run causing injury, an infraction for possession of marijuana while driving, and sentencing enhancements and allegations for having a blood alcohol level over .20 percent and causing bodily injury. If convicted, she faces a maximum sentence of 15 years to life in state prison. The People will be requesting Cowan be held on $1 million bail at her arraignment today, Tuesday, June 26, 2012, in Department CJ-1, Central Jail, Santa Ana. The time is to be determined.
