SAUSD Parent Conference to Provide Valuable Resources for Student Success

SANTA ANA CA- March 3, 2015 – Parents of the Santa Ana Unified School District (SAUSD) are invited to attend the 21st Annual Parent Conference on Saturday, March 14, 2015, at Villa Fundamental Intermediate School, located at 1441 East Chestnut Avenue, Santa Ana, CA 92701. “Our theme this year is “Together, Supporting SAUSD Students.” This theme is fitting because we know that it takes parents and guardians in partnership with teachers, school staff, and district administration to ensure that students are receiving the best educational experience possible,” said Superintendent Rick Miller, Ph.D.

The event will feature a host of workshops and seminars, and community resources that are specifically designed to aid parents in supporting their student’s success. This event is free, and transportation is being provided from each school in the district to the location. LOCAL NON-PROFIT TO GIVE FREE BOOKS TO UNDERSERVED ORANGE COUNTY CHILDREN DURING FREE LITERACY EVENT IN SANTA ANA

Jumpstart at UCI Annual Spring Literacy Event to Bring Books to Life to Encourage Early Childhood Reading Habits

WHAT: More than 450 families from across Orange County are expected to attend Jumpstart’s free annual Spring Literacy event on Saturday, March 7, 10 a.m. at the Heritage Museum in Santa Ana. The exciting event brings books to life with story-themed booths such as the Giving Tree, readings from children’s authors, activities such as a Cat in the Hat sack race, science experiments and more to encourage an interest in reading among preschool age children. Jumpstart will give more than 1,000 free books to children who attend the event. Nurses from Santa Ana Unified School District will be present as well to provide free basic health screenings for children. Continue reading→

Santa Ana is getting a new charter middle school this year

The Orange County Board of Education recently approved a petition to open a new charter school in Santa Ana, called the Vista Heritage Charter Middle School (VHCMS ). The details are pending negotiations with the OCBE but this looks like a done deal, according to the O.C. Register.

The board’s decision came after a petition from VHCMS was turned down by the Santa Ana Unified School District on a 4-1 vote in November. The O.C. board members overturned that decision by a 5-0 vote.

The OCBE is comprised of five Republicans. The SAUSD School Board has two Republicans but only one of them, Ceci Iglesias, supports charter schools.

First California Community College Bachelor’s Degree Programs Receive Initial Approval from Board of Governors

Pilot program is historic leap forward for college system; final approval in March

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The California Community Colleges Board of Governors, in a landmark move for public higher education, today gave initial approval to 15 colleges to develop bachelor’s degree programs in fields such as respiratory therapy, dental hygiene, automotive technology and aerospace manufacturing technology as part of a pilot program approved by the Legislature and Gov. Jerry Brown.

“These colleges are embarking on a new mission for the California Community Colleges that will expand opportunities in public higher education,” said California Community Colleges Chancellor Brice W. Harris. “Students will have a range of programs from which to choose to earn high quality, affordable and in-demand degrees. California employers win too, as they will have improved access to highly qualified candidates in these fields.” Continue reading→

This event will be held Saturday, January 24, 2015 from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. in downtown Santa Ana between 2nd and Sycamore Street.

There will be entertainment, information specific to participating schools, and student speakers available to share their school experiences. All of the traditional high schools including Century, Godinez Fundamental, Middle College, Saddleback, Santa Ana, Segerstrom, and Valley high schools and all of the intermediate schools including Carr, Lathrop, MacArthur Fundamental, McFadden, Mendez Fundamental, Sierra Preparatory Academy, Spurgeon, Villa Fundamental, and Willard intermediate schools will be represented. Noche de Justicia event set for tonight at Spurgeon Intermediate

The Spurgeon Social Justice Club is hosting a Noche de Justicia” on Thursday, December 18th, from 5-7 pm in the C-Quad at Spurgeon Intermediate School on Fifth and Fairview in Santa Ana, CA. It is a celebration of the Brown vs. Board of Education Decision that desegregated public education in the United States. The event is open to students, parents, SAUSD staff, and community members. There will be music, performances, and food. There is no charge for the event.

It will be a great event filled with Danza Azteca, great music from the Valley Marching Band (including Spurgeon students) and the Spurgeon choir, spoken word from the community, great speakers, and the unveiling of the mural “In Defense of Santa Ana” created by the Spurgeon students who attended the “History of Santa Ana” class this summer at Spurgeon. National Ratings Report Cites Santa Ana Unified School District as Financially Stable

(December 1, 2014) – The Santa Ana Unified School District’s financial outlook is in good condition according to a reputable ratings firm that ranks the credit worthiness of businesses. Moody’s Investors Service has affirmed the Aa3 rating on the district’s CA’s general obligation (GO) bonds and affirmed the A2 rating on the district’s certificates of participation (COP) and removed the negative outlook on the financial state of the district from last year’s rating. “The improved rating reflects the ongoing commitment and dedication of our Board of Education and staff to ensure that we remain fiscally solvent and continue to prepare our students for college and career and the global economy,” said Stefanie Phillips, Ed.D., Deputy Superintendent of Operations of the Santa Ana Unified School District. VALERIE AMEZCUA WINS RACE FOR SANTA ANA UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT BOARD

Santa Ana, California – Valerie Amezcua has won a seat on the Santa Ana Unified School District Board. Final election results posted by the Orange County Registrar of Voters show Amezcua placed second in a field of eight candidates. The results are expected to be certified tomorrow.

“I’m humbled by the support our campaign received from families throughout the Santa Ana Unified School District,” said Amezcua. “I would like to extend a heartfelt congratulations to all of the candidates that volunteered their time and talents to advocate for improving our schools. Protest against the killing of 43 Mexican students set for 11/20 in Santa Ana

A group of local students led by Emmanuel Gonzalez, a Beckman High School student, has organized a protest in Santa Ana against the murder of 43 students who went missing Sept. 26 after a confrontation with police in Iguala, 80 miles southwest of Mexico City.

There are allegations that the Mayor of Iguala and his wife conspired with the police and drug gangs to kill the 43 students who had come to town to collect money and had commandeered buses. Continue reading→

Anaheim, CA – More than 10,000 third-graders from more than 100 schools from all corners of Orange County will descend upon Angel Stadium the morning of Thursday, Nov. 13 for the annual “Gift of History” celebration.
