PROTEST, STILL MORE IMPORTANT THAN PEACE, THOUGH GROUPS PARTICIPATED FULLY IN EVERY STEP OF THE PLANNING ! EL CENTRO AND OTHER GROUPS FAIL TO BRING A SOCIAL JUSTICE LENS TO SANTA ANA’S ARTS MASTER PLAN

Groups from El Centro Cultural de Mexico and Santa Ana’s Community Artists have failed, by their own admission in a recent issued statement, to bring a social justice lens to Santa Ana’s first Arts and Culture Master Plan.

Despite having seats on the arts and culture master planning committee table and being represented as stakeholders in planning focus groups where they influenced the plan in meetings, group members have claimed — after the plan was passed on Tuesday August 16th — that the plan has “no social justice lens” as quoted in a recent OC Weekly article Santa Ana City Council Approves 10-Year Arts and Culture Master Plan. Noche de Altares

El Centro Cultural de Mexico is hosting their annual Noche de Altares (Day of the Dead) event on Saturday, November 7 , from 1:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m. at 4th and Birch Streets, in Santa Ana.

Since 2002, El Centro Cultural de Mexico has been organizing Noche de Altares, or a Night of Altars, a community based Día de los Muertos celebration, where families, students, community organization and businesses come together to create an authentic cultural experience that reflects Mexican tradition and what makes up our communities today. Organized by volunteers, the purpose of the celebration is to honor the ancient traditions of the festival and bring community members together through art, culture, and compassion. La Noche de San Patricios

Join El Centro Cultural de Mexico for their 5th Annual San Patricios commemorative and educational event.

They will have Keltic/Irish and Indigenous/Mexican food, folk music from both cultures and a documentary about the San Patricio struggle.

The Saint Patrick’s Battalion (Spanish: Batallón de San Patricio), formed and led by Jon Riley, was a unit of 175 to several hundred immigrants (accounts vary) and expatriates of European descent who fought as part of the Mexican Army against the United States in theMexican–American War of 1846-8. Most of the battalion’s members had deserted or defected from the United States Army.

Day Laborer Celebration

The victory of day laborers in Costa Mesa will be honored at El Centro Cultural de Mexico on Saturday, February 22, 2014 from 5 to 9 pm.  They are located at 313 N. Birch Street in Downtown Santa Ana.

The City of Costa Mesa passed a law prohibiting the solicitation of work (10-354) in Dec. of 2005.  Day laborers continued to resist the ordinance by congregating at Corners of Resistance, and people from the Tonantzin Collective monitored police behavior at the corners. This policy was combined with an agreement to have immigration officers in the Costa Mesa Police Station. In Sept. of 2009, 12 day laborers were picked up by undercover Costa Mesa police disguised as employers. All 12 were arrested and booked for the “crime” of looking for work. All 12 of them were later turned over to ICE custody and deported since they were undocumented. Continue reading→

Mexica New Year

If you celebrated the New Year on January 1, you might be surprised to know that the indigenous people of Mexico celebrate the New Year on a different day, on Feb. 2 to be exact.  El Centro Cultural de Mexico is hosting a Mexica New Year Event on February 2, 2013.  There will be a Spanish language presentation from 2:00 pm to 4:30 pm then 5:00 pm to 8:30 pm they will have a presentation in English.  The event will be located at 313 N. Birch Street, in Santa Ana.

  • Olin Tezcatlipoca will speak on the theme is “Revival of Our Heritage By How We Live Our Lives”.
  • Citlalli Citlalmina Anahuac will speak on the women leaders of Cemanahuac.
  • Amoxeh will explain why the New Year is celebrated Feb. 2.

Copwatch meeting at El Centro Cultural de Mexico set for this Wed. night

An organization called “Copwatch” is hosting a meeting this Wednesday, Nov. 21, from 7 pm until 9:30 pm, at El Centro Cultural de Mexico, located at 313 N. Birch Street, in Santa Ana.

This meeting is supposed to be a “general meeting/discussion regarding the police state in our hood.” They’ll be sharing their experiences as well as bringing up possible solutions to the problems in our communities that have resulted from “criminalization by the police.”  They will also have a skill-share section showing people how to check a cop. Support the Santa Ana Noche de Altares at the Catrina Ball on Oct. 13

You can support this year’s Santa Ana 2012 Noche de Altares (Day of the Dead/Dia de los Muertos) event by attending the first annual Catrina Ball at Bistro 400, at 9:30 pm.  Bistro 400 is located at 400 W. 4th St., in Downtown Santa Ana, by the Federal Courthouse.

El Centro Cultural de Mexico and Calacas are among those who are organizing the Noche de Altares event.  They apparently turned down a $10,000 donation from Downtown, Inc., the association that manages the money that is taken from Downtown Santa Ana property owners and spent by a select board.  Bravo to El Centro and Calacas for turning down this dirty money!
