In the event of a major disaster or a more common emergency, learn how to care for yourself, your family and your neighbors until help arrives.

Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Training will be conducted on Saturday, February 20 and Saturday February 27, 9AM to 5PM and Saturday, March 5, 9AM to 12PM (must attend all 3), at the Centennial Park Public Safety Training Center (3006 Centennial Road, behind Godinez High School). Fire destroys two garages and three cars at a Santa Ana townhome complex

A townhome complex located at 3600 Bear St., in Santa Ana caught fire on Saturday afternoon at around 4:50 p.m., according to the O.C. Fire Authority’s Twitter page.

Thirty firefighters responded to the fire, from the OCFA and the Costa Mesa and Fountain Valley Fire Departments.

The fire on S. Bear St. that started around 4:50 PM yesterday destroyed two garages and three vehicles. Continue reading→

Fire wrecks Roda’s Dulceria and damages two other stores at a Santa Ana strip mall

Fifty five firefighters from the Orange County Fire Authority and the Orange Fire Department put out a two alarm fire at a six-unit strip mall at the 200 block of West 1st Street in Santa Ana, at 12:45 a.m. on Friday morning, according to the OCFA’s Twitter page.

The fire was blamed on an electrical failure inside the Roda’s Dulceria party store located at 200 W. 1st St., according to the O.C. Register. Continue reading→

Fine particles in wood smoke – also known as particulate matter or PM2.5 – can get deep into the lungs and cause respiratory illnesses, increases in emergency room visits and hospitalizations.

Local machine shop heavily damaged by a weekend fire

A local machine shop, JD Industries, was damaged by a fire on Sunday morning at 11:45 a.m., fire officials said. The business was closed when the fire broke out.

Officials Ask Public’s Help to Stop Spread after Invasive Pest Found in Orange County

Gold Spotted Oak Borer (GSOB), an invasive beetle that has killed thousands of oak trees in San Diego and Riverside counties in a short span of time, has now been detected in Orange County. The GSOB was discovered in approximately 60 trees on County park land in northern Orange County. Since GSOB is transported in oak firewood, it is critical that Californians keep firewood local and not move it out of the area.

This new detection of GSOB represents the second long-distance movement of the beetle from its known areas of infestation in San Diego and Riverside Counties. It is believed to have made the jump from either San Diego or Riverside to Orange County through the movement of infested firewood. “The public plays a key role in stopping the spread of the GSOB,” said Orange County Board Chairman, 3rd District Supervisor and OCFA Board Member Todd Spitzer. “When choosing firewood make sure you buy it from a local source and not from out of the area. This infestation could have devastating effects on Orange County and all California and we all must work to stop its spread.” Continue reading→

OC Residents Need to Be Wildfire Aware

On Wednesday, the Orange County Fire Authority (OCFA), Orange County Sheriff’s Department, OC Parks, and several other agencies and organizations held a press conference urging Orange County residents to be fire aware.

“Our recent drought has caused California to enter a state of emergency, due to the risk of wildfire,” said Supervisor Todd Spitzer, also an OCFA Director. “We’ve had a number of dry months with a miniscule amount of rain, so as we enter our hotter months, Orange County is at great risk from the severe wildfire conditions.” Continue reading→
