NEW ‘OC FOOD INSPECTIONS’ APPLICATION PROVIDES ACCESS TO RESTAURANT INFORMATION ON MOBILE PHONES

(Santa Ana) – The Orange County Health Care Agency Environmental Health Food Program has introduced the OC Food Inspections application. Available for Android and iPhone, this easy to use application gives the public instant access to food safety and sanitation information for Orange County’s restaurants and markets.

“We are very pleased to offer this improved level of transparency,” said Mark Refowitz, Health Care Agency Director. “While restaurant inspection information has always been available on our ocfoodinfo.com web site, the OC Food Inspections app puts all of the available information for a restaurant or market right in the palm of your hand.” Continue reading→

The Orange County Health Care Agency developed an app to ensure County residents and visitors are informed about the food safety and sanitation at Orange County’s restaurants and markets. With the county’s new app it has never been easier to access information about the compliance of your favorite local restaurants.

SANTA ANA UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT PROVIDES FREE LUNCHES THROUGH SUMMER MEAL PROGRAM

SANTA ANA, CA — June 19, 2015 – The Santa Ana Unified School District (SAUSD) will be participating in a free summer lunch program at 51 school sites and 8 Parks and Recreation Centers across the district from June 22 to August 26.

The federally-funded program operates Monday through Friday for breakfast (except Parks and Recreation Centers) and lunch. The program is open to all youths under the age of 18, no income requirement or registration is necessary, and all participants must eat their lunch at the site. Continue reading→

Help replace 1,500 pounds of food for needy children that was stolen

Grandma’s House of Hope , a Santa Ana-based nonprofit that provides basic needs and enrichment services to women, children, and families living in extreme poverty needs our help. Their food shed at St. Anselm of Canterbury Episcopal Church in Garden Grove was broken into on Wednesday 1,500 pounds of food they use to provide meals to kids enrolled in school lunch programs who can’t afford to eat on weekends and after school was stolen. They were hoping to pack the food into bags this Saturday.

If you would like to donate food to replace what was stolen you can drop off non-perishable items between 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. today at Grandma’s House of Hope, located at 1505 E. 17th St. in Santa Ana. Monetary donations can also be made online here. Continue reading→

Soon to be replaced by a Dunkin’ Donuts

Santa Ana and Westminster are the next two Orange County cities to land a Dunkin’ Donuts, according to the O.C. Register.

Dunkin’ Donuts is going to replace the closed Tacos Mexico restaurant located at 100 S. Harbor Blvd., in Santa Ana. They are also opening a location at 15482 Goldenwest St., which is the site of a former 76 gas station. Continue reading→

Community: The DTSA Farmers’ Market Turns One

The DTSA Farmers’ Market is celebrating its one year anniversary!

A community-oriented, chef-driven certified farmers’ market – here’s a recap of what year one looked like:

• The DTSA Farmers’ Market launched on March 27, 2014, providing the community with a weekly event with organic produce, artisan foods, live local music, and a free kids’ craft table.

• In May they began to offer a “Friends of the Market Program” to residents and shoppers. With a DTSA Farmers’ Market tote bag, you can get discounts all over town, every Thursday. This has helped to create a destination feeling for the downtown area, with the market being one of a number of stops for shoppers. Continue reading→

Is the Dough Exchange’s failure a sign of things to come in DTSA?

“In late 2014, Jason Quinn, the chef-owner of The Playground, opened Dough Exchange next door to his critically acclaimed restaurant in downtown Santa Ana. But the Fourth Street bakery has struggled to generate foot traffic and sales, forcing Quinn to toss out freshly baked goods and breads every night,” according to the OC Register.

In attempt to resuscitate the storefront, Quinn told the Register on Thursday that he’s going to offer baked goods for free starting Friday. Dine-in customers will be limited to two items such as doughnuts, pastries, and meat pies. In exchange for the free food, Quinn is asking customers to fill out a form that provides him feedback on what they like and dislike about the food and prices.

This is pretty hilarious considering that Quinn famously has rejected all input from his customers! His philosophy has been that he is the Chef and you will eat what he cooks the way he cooks it – your opinion be damned. Continue reading→

Will the new Norms Restaurant owner improve the Santa Ana location?

After more than 65 years of family ownership, Southern California’s iconic Norms restaurant chain has been sold. The flashing neon and 24-hour sizzling grills have been a Los Angeles institution since Norman Roybark opened his first location near the bustling music scene at Sunset and Vine in 1949 and will continue on under new owner Jim Balis, according to L.A. Magazine.

The Norm’s in Santa Ana has been on the corner of 17th and Main St. for as long as I can remember. They are open 24 hours and are always busy. Service can be spotty, as noted in Yelp, where they have only 2.5 stars. But their breakfast meals are awesome and I love that they serve soup and salad with many of their dinners. And you can’t beat their half a sandwich with soup and salad lunch. Continue reading→

Cholula’s Bakery apologizes but their health record has been bad for awhile

Cholula’s Bakery has posted an apology on their Facebook page in the wake of this week’s scandal that saw many of their customers sickened after they consumed their Rosca de Reyes bread. Here is their apology:

First off and foremost we would like to apologize to all of our customers who experienced strange symptoms after eating our rosca de reyes cake. Our small business has been in operation for over 14 years and we have never seen anything like this; at the same time we don’t want anyone to think that for any reason we are attempting to bypass our responsibilities.

There are steps we need to take and at this moment our small business is collaborating with the health department to solve this problem, and our employees are also working hard to ensure our business is safe and in good condition to continue providing our loyal customers the quality product they come to purchase. Again, we are apologetic and in a way ashamed this happened to our customers.

As soon as we are informed what caused these rare side effects, you will be informed too.

Second annual Plaza Navideña holiday event set for Dec. 13

Blaze Pizza is now open in Santa Ana, at the MainPlace Mall. And today they are offering free pizza, all day long, as part of their grand opening festivities.

Blaze Pizza uses an assembly-line format that lets guests customize a signature pizza or create one of their own, choosing from a wide selection of fresh, artisanal toppings, most at no extra charge. Each 11-inch pizza is then “fast-fire’d” in a blazing-hot, open-hearth oven, and is ready in less than two minutes. Blaze Pizza offers gluten-free dough and vegan cheese to accommodate pizza fans with specific dietary needs as well. The restaurant’s menu also features signature salads, lemonades, beer & wine, and house-made S’more Pies for dessert.
