The Do Lunch Deli is now open at Santa Ana’s Civic Center

The Do Lunch Deli is now open at 901 West Civic Center Dr., Suite 150, in Santa Ana. They opened about two weeks ago. They are open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The owner, Brian Doyle, has had a great admiration and fascination with delis since he was a kid. When he was young he and his grandmother went to all the delicatessens in the Los Angeles area. Valley is Four Time Champions of National Culinary Arts Competition

(Santa Ana, CA) – The Culinary Arts Team of High School Inc. at Valley High School did it again! They are the national champions of the Cooking Up Change Culinary Arts competition for the fourth time in five years. Congratulations to Rosa Aguilar, Daisy Lagunas, and Mariah Macias for proudly representing Santa Ana while facing tough competition from nine other cities across the United States to bring home a 1st place finish.

The road to becoming champions began with a regional competition hosted locally by Kid Healthy and Northgate Gonzalez Market as part of a national program, founded by Healthy Schools Campaign, based in Chicago. As a requirement of the competition, students must work within the constraints of school food service including limited ingredients, tight budgets, and limited steps to produce the full meal. The team did just that. After creating a delicious meal that included Moroccan stuffed zucchini, Moroccan salad, and spiced pear cups, the trio captured the attention of the judges and were awarded 1st place out of 11 high schools in Orange County who competed in the 5th annual Cooking Up Change® competition. FREE MEALS FOR CHILDREN IN SANTA ANA THIS SUMMER!

The Nutrition Services Department in Santa Ana Unified School District is pleased to announce that we will be participating in the Seamless Summer Feeding Option; serving free summer meals to children in the community!

We have 54 school sites and 7 Parks and Recreation Centers participating across the district. The federally-funded program operates Monday through Friday for breakfast (except Parks and Recreation Centers) and lunch. The program is open to all children in the community from 1-18 years, no income requirement or registration is necessary. Continue reading→

Black Bear Diner is coming to Santa Ana next month

Redding-based Black Bear Diner is opening a restaurant in a former Carrow’s at 3355 S. Bristol Ave., Santa Ana in early July, according to the O.C. Register.

Black Bear Diner was founded in 1995. They are a community-oriented, family dining concept that offers a “one-of-a-kind experience in a fun, bear-themed atmosphere,” according to their website.The company has a goal of opening 100 units by 2018. Continue reading→

Community: Free DTSA Lunch Trolley Set to Begin on Tuesday

The City of Santa Ana and the Downtown Santa Ana (DTSA) Restaurant Association are happy to announce the launch of the DTSA Lunch Trolley on Tuesday, June 7th. The free trolley service will operate Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 11:30 am-1:30 pm.

The trolley will provide an alternative transportation option for Civic Center visitors and staff who would like to explore the many dining options downtown, without having to drive or worry about looking for parking. New restaurants now open in Santa Ana

Irenia Restaurant, the itinerant Filipino pop-up restaurant by Chef Ryan Garlitos, has opened in the Santa Ana in the space that used to be The North Left (which was itself The Crosby before that), according to the OC Weekly. Irenia is open at 400 N .Broadway, in Downtown Santa Ana.

Garlitos has aspired to open his own restaurant named for and honoring his grandmother’s soulful Filipino cooking. Born and raised in Orange County, he honed his culinary prowess at such renowned and respected local eateries like Slapfish and Taco Maria, according to Irenia’s website. Continue reading→

The City of Santa Ana’s 17th Annual Cinco de Mayo Festival is taking place on Saturday, April 30th and Sunday, May 1st. The festivities begin at 12 noon each day on Fourth Street in historic Downtown Santa Ana. This annual tradition celebrates Santa Ana’s vibrant Mexican culture with live entertainment including top level performers each night, delicious food, affordable shopping, interactive art activities, and exciting carnival rides for children of all ages. The Festival will also include the “Plaza de la Cultura,” a visual art display commemorating the history of Cinco de Mayo as well as a beer garden (for adults only) to enjoy cold, refreshing beverages.

On Saturday, April 30th, the highly popular Kevin Ortiz will be performing on the Festival’s main stage. Kevin Ortiz is a Latin pop singer from Pasadena, California. Another hip DTSA restaurant closes as North Left goes the way of The Crosby

The North Left, the downtown Santa Ana restaurant that replaced The Crosby after the awful murder of one of their patrons, who was literally kicked to death outside the restaurant by two women in 2014, has closed their doors according to the O.C. Register.

The owners, Phil Nisco, Chris Alfaro and Marc Yamaoka, hired Ryan Adams, a Laguna Beach chef at Three Seventy Common, to oversee the new operations at North Left, which opened pretty quickly after The Crosby shut down. Continue reading→

Hometown Buffet has closed their location on South Bristol Street

One of the Hometown Buffet locations in Santa Ana (at 2321 South Bristol St.) has closed down, just weeks after their parent company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, according to the O.C. Register.

HomeTown Buffet’s parent company, Ovation, third Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection filing in eight years last month. They may close up to 300 locations of restaurants that include Old Country Buffet, Ryan’s, Fire Mountain and Tahoe Joe’s, according to CNBC. Continue reading→

Waste Not OC Named Model Public Health Practice by National Association of County and City Health Officials

Waste Not OC, a coalition working to combat food insecurity in Orange County, has been selected as a model practice by the National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO) after demonstrating exemplary and replicable qualities in response to a local public health need.

In Orange County, one in five people faces food insecurity on any given day. To address this growing social problem, the County of Orange Health Care Agency’s Public Health Officer spearheaded the creation of a coalition of food banks, health care representatives, restaurants, food distributors, and community leaders called Waste Not OC. The organization is a public-private partnership with the goal of eliminating hunger and reducing food waste by facilitating surplus food donations from food-producing facilities to local pantries.
