State’s Department of Water Resources Heeds State Assemblyman Jose Solorio’s Call to Pay OC for Flood Control Projects

Already arriving reimbursement funds will total $51.8 million by end of January

Anaheim – State Assemblyman Jose Solorio’s (D-Anaheim) pursuit to find more state resources for the cash-strapped County of Orange has led to a significant payout to the county by the State of California. Flood control “subvention” claims from Orange County to the state totaling approximately $80 million are on their way, with $51.8 million, representing six Santa Ana River claims, in county coffers by the end of January. These represent funds that had previously been stalled at the state for several Santa Ana River and main-channel project claims. Continue reading→

The Alliance for California Traditional Arts promotes and supports ways for cultural traditions to thrive by providing resources for folk and traditional artists through an Apprenticeship Program, a Living Cultures Grants Program, and a Traditional Arts Development Program. Details here.

ACTA promotes and supports ways for cultural traditions to thrive now and into the future by providing advocacy, resources, and connections for folk and traditional artists. Folk and traditional artists are tradition bearers: people who transmit what they believe, know, do and create with others who share a common heritage. From Ohlone basketry and African-American quilt-making to cowboy poetry and Vietnamese opera, California is home to hundreds of diverse traditions.

ACTA connects artists, communities, and funders to each other, information, and resources through grants and contracts, convenings, research, and technical assistance. ACTA also provides advocacy through local and national field-building. Rooted in California’s cultural communities, ACTA is in direct communication with tradition bearers who are often un- or under-recognized by mainstream funders. ACTA’s programs and services are created, evaluated, and evolved as a response to the specific needs of these artists and their communities.

Folk & traditional artists are tradition bearers: people who transmit what they believe, know, do, and create with others who share a common heritage, language, religion, occupation, or region. These expressions are deeply rooted in and reflective of a community’s shared standards of beauty, values, or life experiences. Folk and traditional arts are, ultimately, passed on from one generation to the next and express a collective wisdom, rather than a unique personal aesthetic.

REP. LORETTA SANCHEZ ANNOUNCES $8,941,135 IN HOMELAND SECURITY FUNDING FOR ORANGE COUNTY

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Washington, DC- Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez (CA-47), senior member of the House Committee on Homeland Security, today announced that Orange County will receive $8,941,135 in funding for FY 2011 through the Department of Homeland Security’s Urban Area Security Initiative (UASI) program. UASI grants are provided to help local law enforcement in communities at risk of a terrorist attack.

The $8,941,135 in funding for FY 2011 is a nearly $4 million reduction from funding allocated to Orange County last year through the UASI program. In FY 2010, Orange County received $12,773,050 in UASI funding. Unfortunately, funding to UASI was slashed by twenty percent in the continuing resolution agreement forced by House Republicans, an agreement which Rep. Sanchez voted against.

“I am disappointed that UASI cannot fully renew last year’s security funding for Orange County,” said Sanchez. “These are tough economic times but homeland security must remain a priority. I am thankful for the critical funding Orange County did receive. Orange County is home to many national attractions which require high security at all times and this money will help train and equip first responders and emergency management officials to respond to any threats or disasters that Orange County may face. Initiatives like UASI help ensure that Orange County receives enough security funding to keep our people safe.”

Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez is proud to represent California’s 47th Congressional District, which includes the cities of Anaheim, Garden Grove, Santa Ana, and parts of Fullerton in Orange County. She serves as Ranking Member of the House Armed Services Subcommittee on Strategic Forces and a senior member of the Committee on Homeland Security. Rep. Assemblyman Jose Solorio’s Special End of Year Request

As you make end-of-year or beginning-of-year funding decisions for worthy non-profit organizations, I hope you’ll consider the Orange County Leadership Fund. Your support would not only help our cause, but also provide you with an eligible tax deduction.

Orange County is a thriving community with a population of over three million people. Maintaining our county’s quality of life will require the active involvement of community leaders, elected officials, youth and many local residents. The Orange County Leadership Fund hopes to inspire that involvement.

The Orange County Leadership Fund supports leadership workshops, innovative education initiatives, neighborhood clean-up projects, and programs addressing local and state policy issues.

I am especially supportive of the organization’s new Solorio Scholars program. The Solorio Scholars program was created to inspire more high school students from central Orange County to apply for college and help them pay for their college application fees – which few scholarship programs assist with.

Striving for Excellence In Our Schools – Update on Race to the Top

Meeting the learning needs of our children is the public school system’s responsibility, but it is up to all of us to insist on excellence. Therefore, I will periodically report on current legislative efforts that aim to increase academic achievement and support our teachers by giving them the best tools to educate our children.

Currently, California is aggressively competing for President Obama’s federal Race to the Top (RTTT) and School Improvement Grant (SIG) funding opportunities with other states. Funding for RTTT is available in two phases, Phase 1 and Phase 2.
