SANTA ANA, Calif. – A criminal street gang member was sentenced today to 50 years to life in state prison for the shooting murder of a fellow gang member and taking the victim’s bike to flee the scene. Daniel Alvarez, 22, Orange, was found guilty by a jury on Sept. 23, 2015, of one felony count of murder and one felony count of possession of a firearm by a probationer with a sentencing enhancement for the personal discharge of a firearm causing death.
At the time of the crime, Alvarez and the victim, 18-year-old Bruno Ugalde, were members of the same criminal street gang. Alvarez was on formal probation. Continue reading→
Peter Ojeda, one of the original Mexican Mafia bosses, was sentenced Monday to 15 years in prison for federal racketeering charges, according to the O.C. Register.
Even though Ojeda was in jail for many years he continued to control crime in local neighborhoods and in the jails via his large gang network.
Ojeda was lucky that he did not get a life sentence. U.S. District Judge James V. Selna gave him the opportunity to earn his freedom if he behaves and renounces his past ways. Continue reading→
A 17-year-old boy was the victim of a drive-by shooting at a Santa Ana bus stop on Friday night, according to the O.C. Register.
The shooting happened at a bus stop on South Fairview Street, just north of West McFadden Ave., at 8:33 p.m. The teen was sitting at the bus stop when he was struck by a bullet fired from a passing vehicle. Continue reading→

WESTMINSTER, Calif. – A juvenile gang member was charged as an adult today with attempted murder for shooting a 42-year-old man during an argument. Phillip Nguyen, 15, Garden Grove, is direct filed as an adult and charged with one felony count of attempted murder with willful deliberation and premeditation, and sentencing enhancements for the personal use of a firearm causing great bodily injury and criminal street gang activity. If convicted, Nguyen faces a maximum sentence of 32 years to life in state prison. The People will be requesting the defendant be held on $1 million bail at his scheduled arraignment tomorrow, April 29, 2016, at 9:00 a.m. in Department W-12, West Justice Center, Westminster. Two unidentified men were shot in an alley off of West Myrtle Street in Santa Ana at 9:20 p.m. on Saturday, according to the O.C. Register.

A Peace & Unity March and Rally has been set for Saturday, April 30, 2016. This is a community city-wide event that will take place at Jerome Park, located at 2215 McFadden Ave., in Santa Ana.

Santa Ana’s latest gang-related shooting happened on Friday at Centennial Park at around 5:30 p.m. when three male Hispanic adult suspects shot confronted a lone Hispanic man and one of the suspects ended up firing a single round, hitting the victim in his upper torso, according to the O.C. Thursday night was a hot one for the SAPD. There were two gang-related fatalities that kept them very busy.
In the first incident, Kevin Sotelo, 24 was riding a bike at the 4000 block of West Hazard Ave., when he was shot and killed in a drive-by shooting. Multiple shots were directed at the unfortunate bicyclist from a vehicle, according to the SAPD.
SAPD police officers responded to the scene of the shooting at approximately 8:38 p.m. Police officers found the victim, Sotelo, at the intersection of Hazard and Morse suffering from several gunshot wounds. One of our readers reported yesterday on our Facebook page that there was a shooting at Centennial Park. Today that was verified by the O.C. Register as they reported that one man was shot and two others pistol-whipped by gangbangers at Centennial park on Tuesday afternoon.
The suspects, as many as six males, approached three 19-year-old men at the park, which is located at 3000 Edinger Ave., yesterday at around 4 p.m. Then, as usual, the suspects asked the victims where they were from and gunfire ensued, leaving one victim wounded in his lower torso. Vanessa Elizabeth Rodriguez, a 25-year-old woman, was killed late Wednesday night in a gang-related shooting inside a residential garage behind a Catholic church the west alley of the 700 block of North Lacy Street, according to the O.C. Register.
The SAPD said that two suspects entered an alley, pulled open a garage door and began shooting at the three people inside, hitting all of them, according to ABC News.

Advisory: SAPD Continues It’s Criminal Street Gang Suppression Operations
In an effort to address the surge in gang-related violence, the Santa Ana Police Department has developed a strategy, which incorporates continuous criminal street gang suppression enforcement operations.
On Sunday, March 13, 2016 the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) – Santa Ana Gang Task Force, which consists of personnel from the Santa Ana Police Department, FBI, Orange County Sheriff’s Department, Orange County District Attorney’s Office, and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives along with Santa Ana Police Department’s Gang Unit, Field Operations Bureau, and Orange County Probation Department conducted a citywide gang suppression enforcement operation. Julian Barragan, 21, has been identified as the man who was shot several times the day after a number of local church groups and community leaders held a rally to denounce the growing violence in Santa Ana, according to the O.C. Register.
Barragan was walking near West Kent Avenue and Newhope Street at around 4:30 a.m. today when he was attacked. The victim did not have any known gang affiliations.
Barragan ended up dying due to his injuries.

Advisory: Santa Ana Experiences 29% Decrease in Shootings
In response to an increase in gang-related shootings during the month of January, 2016, the Santa Ana Police Department has deployed additional police officers and detectives to conduct proactive crime enforcement. This directed enforcement was purposefully concentrated in areas of our community most impacted by gang activity. The results thus far include 23 guns seized and 113 gang members arrested by SAPD gang detectives, and a 29% decrease in shootings during the month of February alone. Continue reading→

Booking Charges: Assault with a Deadly Weapon on a Police Officer, Felony Evading and Hit and Run Collision
Summary: Thursday, 2-25-16, at approximately 3:07PM, a SAPD motor officer attempted to stop a black Ford Mustang for traffic violations in the area of 5th and Jackson when the driver accelerated and failed to yield.
A pursuit ensued during which the suspect vehicle collided with a civilian’s vehicle and continued to flee. At one point, the suspect stopped and began backing directly at the motor officer, using the suspect vehicle as a weapon. The motor officer was able to avoid the suspect vehicle. Continue reading→
