OC SUPERVISOR ANDREW DO CALLS ON MEDI-CAL TO HALT CLAWBACK OF MILLIONS OF DOLLARS FROM CALOPTIMA DOCTORS

(Santa Ana, California) – Years after the bills have been paid, the state’s public health insurance program has begun to demand repayment of millions of dollars from doctors who provide health care to low-income families, children, seniors and persons with disabilities in Orange County.

Orange County Supervisor Andrew Do, a member of the CalOptima board of directors, is calling for an end to this clawback by the state’s fee-for-service Medi-Cal program, arguing that the process is unfair and could result in more doctors leaving CalOptima, Orange County’s low-income health insurance program. Do the people of Santa Ana want a Drinking District or a Wellness District?

Downtown Santa Ana merchants and community groups, including Building Healthy Communities, will be at this Tuesday’s Santa Ana City Council meeting, to propose that the city establish a Downtown Wellness District strategy to foster retail and services that are authentic to our city’s Latino character, according to the O.C. Register.

The idea is to serve the people of Santa Ana and further diversify the visitors coming to DTSA by rebranding the area as Calle Cuatro Marketplace.”

We have been saying for some time that the hipster gentrification of DTSA has not served the majority of our residents and has in fact been part of an ongoing effort to push Latinos out of DTSA and cater to people who don’t live here. Continue reading→

A explosion at the Exxon-Mobil refinery in Torrance has caused smoke and ash in surrounding areas. At this time the impacts are local.

In any area impacted by smoke: Everyone should avoid any vigorous outdoor or indoor exertion; people with respiratory or heart disease, the elderly, and children should remain indoors. Keep windows and doors closed or seek alternate shelter. Run your air conditioner if you have one. Keep the fresh air intake closed and the filter clean to prevent bringing additional smoke inside. NO-BURN ALERT: MANDATORY WOOD-BURNING BAN IN EFFECT TODAY AND TOMORROW FOR RESIDENTS OF THE SOUTH COAST AIR BASIN

All Indoor and Outdoor Residential Wood Burning Prohibited Due to High Air Pollution Predicted for Tuesday, February 17 and Wednesday, February 18

The South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD) has issued a residential no-burn alert effective Tuesday, February 17 and Wednesday, February 18, 2015, for all those living in the South Coast Air Basin, which includes the greater Los Angeles area, Orange County and the Inland Empire. SCAQMD reminds residents in these areas that burning wood in their fireplaces is prohibited today and tomorrow, through midnight on Wednesday. No-burn alerts are mandatory in order to protect public health due to a high concentration of fine particle air pollution forecast for the area. The no-burn prohibition also applies to manufactured fire logs, such as those made from wax or paper.

Fine particles in wood smoke – also known as particulate matter or PM2.5 – can get deep into the lungs and cause respiratory illnesses, increases in emergency room visits and hospitalizations.

The medical marijuana dispensary lottery held in Santa Ana’s City Council Chambers yesterday felt like a cross between a horse race, with all the handicapping going on, and an expensive game of Bingo, according to NBC News.

Cholula’s Bakery has reopened

Cholula’s Bakery was expected to open Wednesday, after enduring a debacle over holiday sweet bread laced with a synthetic drug that sickened more than 40 people and that shut its doors for nearly two weeks, according to the O.C. Register.

Measles Continues to Spread in Orange County

(Santa Ana) – Orange County now has sixteen confirmed cases of measles. Ten of the reported measles cases in Orange County, along with others throughout California and in other states, are connected to visiting Disneyland or Disneyland California Adventure Park in December. The source of the infection for the four most recent cases is not known; they were not exposed at Disneyland and had no known contact to any of the confirmed Disney-associated cases.

The identification of four measles cases with acquisition from unknown community contacts indicates exposure to measles is more widespread throughout the county. The Health Care Agency expects that the measles outbreak will continue to spread, so all should be aware of the signs and symptoms of measles. Health officials remind the public that the best way to prevent the measles is by getting vaccinated. Continue reading→

Cholula’s Bakery apologizes but their health record has been bad for awhile

Cholula’s Bakery has posted an apology on their Facebook page in the wake of this week’s scandal that saw many of their customers sickened after they consumed their Rosca de Reyes bread. Here is their apology:

First off and foremost we would like to apologize to all of our customers who experienced strange symptoms after eating our rosca de reyes cake. Our small business has been in operation for over 14 years and we have never seen anything like this; at the same time we don’t want anyone to think that for any reason we are attempting to bypass our responsibilities.

There are steps we need to take and at this moment our small business is collaborating with the health department to solve this problem, and our employees are also working hard to ensure our business is safe and in good condition to continue providing our loyal customers the quality product they come to purchase. Again, we are apologetic and in a way ashamed this happened to our customers.

Potential Public Exposure to Measles

(Santa Ana) – The Orange County Health Care Agency has confirmed three cases of measles in Orange County in the last week, in conjunction with the outbreak recently reported affecting multiple counties in California and Utah. These cases raise the possibility that Orange County residents may be exposed to measles since the patients visited public locations while infectious.

The Health Care Agency has been working with the facilities listed below to contact people who may have been exposed to these cases and who are at increased risk of severe illness.
