The Santa Ana Police Department once again raided many of Santa Ana’s medical marijuana dispensaries, arresting over 40 people, last night according to OC-NORML’s Facebook page.
The SAPD made 42 arrests after similar raids in mid-July this year, according to the O.C. Register.
The City of Santa Ana banned medical marijuana dispensaries in 2007, but that was ridiculous given that the people of California approved the use of medical marijuana via a statewide ballot measure, Prop. 15, back in 1996.
The only reason our city is having these problems is that the city leaders opted to resist medical marijuana instead of working to find a way to make this work for everyone. What they should have done years ago was develop a Conditional Use Permit (CUP) protocol for medical marijuana dispensaries. Continue reading

Plan to Improve the Health of Orange County Available for Public Comment
(Santa Ana) – The Orange County Health Care Agency and its partners announce a plan to help improve the health of everyone who lives, works and plays in Orange County. Orange County’s overall health fares well compared to other counties in California; the County Health Rankings ranked Orange County the 6th healthiest county in California. Despite that, issues such as obesity and diabetes and increasing rates of Alzheimer’s disease in our aging population are of great concern. When Jane Ka’ala Pang learned she could donate a small amount of her healthy breast tissue to support groundbreaking breast cancer research, she immediately said “yes!” Earlier this year, Ka’ala Pang, along with Angela Acevedo and Charlene Kazner, traveled to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Tissue Bank at Indiana University Simon Cancer Center as Orange County representatives to donate their healthy tissue.
Now, the three women are working with Komen Orange County to raise awareness and encourage participation for the first-ever West Coast healthy breast tissue collection on Nov. 2 – to be held right here in Orange County. The goal of the event is to collect 150 samples from women of Asian American, Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander, African American and Latina descent, in an effort to fuel global breast cancer research. ORANGE COUNTY REPORTS FIRST HUMAN WEST NILE VIRUS CASE OF 2013
(Santa Ana) – A Cypress female in her sixties has tested positive for West Nile Virus (WNV) infection, becoming the County’s first human WNV infection in 2013. This is the 15th human case of WNV reported in California. The woman was admitted to the hospital in July with symptoms of West Nile Virus, and is now at home recovering.
In 2012, there were 48 reported human infections of West Nile Virus and two WNV related deaths reported in Orange County. Continue reading

UPDATE: Supervisor Todd Spitzer now says that he is going to ask the Supervisors to reconsider restaurant letter grade health ratings! Thank you Supervisor Spitzer!
Despite a warning from the county grand jury, the Orange County Board of Supervisors declined, back in December of 2008, to impose a letter grading system designed to inform would-be diners about the health safety record of restaurants, according to the L.A. Times.
Supervisor Janet Nguyen cast the key vote against the letter grading system for restaurants. I broke the news afterwards that O.C. Supervisor Janet Nguyen’s husband, Tom Bonikowski, owned a Lee’s Sandwiches franchise in Stanton that had been fined many times by the O.C. HCA. She never reported that when she voted against the letter grade ratings – and it blew up in the press. Bonikowski has since sold the restaurant. Continue reading
