Where to find free Thanksgiving meals in Orange County, for the needy

There are a number of local charities and organizations offering free Thanksgiving meals this week in and around Santa Ana.  Here is a list of the free meals we were able to identify:

  • The Santa Ana Salvation Army Temple will open its doors to offer all in need this holiday season a warm, turkey meal on Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2013, at 11 am.  They are located at 1710 W. Edinger Avenue, in Santa Ana.  Contact: Major Horta- (714) 545-2937.
  • 100 Turkeys for FREE! and 5 baskets of food for a Thanksgiving Dinner set for Wednesday, Nov 27, 2013, from 10:00 am to 7:00 pm at the Anaheim Marketplace Anaheim, located at 1440 s. Anaheim Blvd., in Anaheim.  50 Turkeys will be handed on Monday November 25, 2013 and the other half on Wednesday November 27, 2013. Volunteers and Donations Sought for County of Orange’s Armory Emergency Shelters

Every year, the County of Orange contracts with Mercy House Living Centers, Inc. to operate and provide services for the County’s Armory Emergency Shelter Program. The shelter at the Fullerton Armory opened last week and the shelter at the Santa Ana Armory will open on Monday, December 2. Continue reading→

The homeless man shot yesterday by SAPD cops was unarmed

Police say that Hans Arellano, the 22-year-old homeless man who was killed in an officer-involved shooting in Santa Ana on Tuesday was not armed. Now, there are three separate investigations underway into the shooting, according to KABC News.

Friends of Arellano say that he had been sleeping behind one of the businesses near the place where he was fatally shot.

Arellano got into a confrontation with an officer around 3 p.m., then ran, he said. Another officer came to assist, and one officer, woman who is a 13-year veteran with the department, shot Arellano once in the front torso, Rojas said, according to the O.C. Register. Continue reading→

The third annual For the Love of WISEPlace Jazz Brunch will be held Sunday, July 28, 1 p.m to 5 p.m. at 25522 Nellie Gail Rd., Laguna Hills.

Santa Ana-based WISEPlace is a nonprofit which provides shelter and support services for homeless women. All proceeds from the event will directly support a woman who is being transformed from homelessness to a life of promise. Continue reading→

Community potluck to feed the needy and homeless set for 3/23

Community organizer TyRon Jackson is organizing a community potluck for the homeless, families in need, troubled youth, those suffering from various illnesses In Orange County. The event will be from noon to 3 p.m. March 23 at Peppertree Park in Tustin. The Super Incredible Potluck is free and all are welcome to join. Santa Ana’s Chapter One: the Modern Local restaurant is serving as a collection site today, Dec. 16, at 11 am, for items to donate to the local homeless.  Chapter One is located at 227 N Broadway, in Downtown Santa Ana.  Click here to like them on Facebook.  The event was put together by Elsy Mejia and Maria Mejia.

“Passing Out Smiles”

In the struggle to find food and a safe place to sleep, homeless people find it difficult to acquire basic items such as soap, shampoo, deodorant, and toothbrushes–things we probably take for granted every day.

Without these items, simple hygienic activities such as brushing their teeth or washing their hands are not only challenging but often out of the realm of possibility. Continue reading→

Blanket, scarf and sock drive to benefit the homeless set for this weekend

A Blanket/Scarf/Sock Drive to benefit the homeless, sponsored by the Mental Health Association of Orange County, has been set for this weekend, December 15-16, from 8 am to 5 pm, at Lillie King Park 500 W. Alton Ave., in Santa Ana.

Thanksgiving Outreach event for the needy, today at the 4th Street Plaza

A Thanksgiving Outreach event for the needy is set for today, Saturday Nov. 17, from 12-3 pm at 4th Street Plaza (at 4th and N. French St.) in downtown Santa Ana.  Event sponsors include Hands of Hope, the City of Santa Ana, and various churches. 

Theywill give away $25 gift cards, shoes, and have carnival games and music. Volunteers are needed for crowd control, prayer partners, face painters, and help with the carnival booths.  If you would like to volunteer you may show up as early as 8 am. Continue reading→

ABC News report about Santa Ana’s homeless was one-sided

An ABC News report on Santa Ana’s homeless population has agitated some of those who are trying to help the homeless.  The report, which you can see above, implies that most of our homeless residents are mentally ill.  It then reports that the SAPD is using a federal grant to train their officers on how to handle the homeless.

The report mentions that the police issue tickets to the homeless for “camping without a permit,” but does not mention that such a permit does not exist.  And while some of the homeless are called “Sex Offenders” apparently many of them gave gotten on that list because they have urinated in public – which was labeled “indecent exposure.”  As critics have pointed out – there aren’t many public restrooms in Downtown Santa Ana.
