Orange County Supervisor Andrew Do, who represents the First District (which includes Santa Ana) will be speaking at the next meeting of the Communication Linkage Forum (Com-Link) about the County’s effort to address homelessness in our city and in the County.

Community: City of Santa Ana Approves Funding to Provide Permanent Supportive Housing for Homeless Veterans and Chronically Homeless Individuals

At its last City Council meeting, the City of Santa Ana unanimously approved awards of 100 project-based vouchers to develop two permanent supportive housing projects with wrap-around supportive services for homeless veterans and chronically homeless individuals.

The first project, Santa Ana Veteran’s Village to be developed by Jamboree Housing Corporation, located at 3312 West 1st Street in Santa Ana, was awarded 75 HUD-VASH project-based vouchers to develop 75 units of permanent supportive housing for homeless military veterans. The design will feature two three-story buildings including a multipurpose space, a private meeting office for the service provider, property management offices, a central laundry facility, a fitness room, a community kitchen, a community garden, and barbecue grills. Body found after a fire was put out under a 5 Fwy. bridge at N. Broadway this morning

Fire at the Santiago Creek by Broadway and the 5 Fwy.

If you live or work anywhere near the Santiago Creek, from Broadway to Main, then you know the area is rife with the homeless. This morning, at about 5:40 a.m., there was a fire at one of the homeless encampments in that area, at the 2700 block of N. Broadway and the 5 Freeway, and firefighters discovered a body after the fire was put out, according to the O.C. Register.

OCFA firefighters were able to put out the fire, which was under a bridge, in about 15 minutes. Then they found the body. Continue reading→

A brazen burglar stole a security camera right off a home in Santa Ana’s Park Santiago Neighborhood on February 9, but the camera caught his image and now the home owner is hopeful that someone will recognize the suspect.

The ACLU requests a restraining order to stop the County from trapping the homeless at the Santa Ana River

The ACLU requested a temporary restraining order Friday against county officials, demanding they remove the fences they erected this week around part of the homeless encampment along the Santa Ana River, according to the O.C. Register.

Earlier this week the O.C. Department of Public Works erected multiple six-foot, chainlink fences around the Santa Ana Riverbed between the Chapman and Orangewood bridges, entrapping nearly 100 individuals and their belongings, according to the ACLU. Continue reading→

Advisory: Detectives Request Media And Publics Assistance In Identifying Person Of Interest In 12-18-2016 Homicide

Victim: Dennis Quan Tran (41) Westminster

On Sunday, December 18, 2016, at 2:45 AM, SAPD Officers responded to the Wal-Mart located at 3600 West McFadden Avenue for a report of a stabbing victim. They located 41 year old Dennis Quan Tran from Westminster, CA. Tran had multiple stab wounds. He was transported to a local hospital where he underwent emergency surgery. Tran did not survive his injuries and was declared deceased.

UPDATE – Based on the investigation, Homicide Detectives obtained surveillance video. The person depicted in the surveillance video is a person of interest in this case. Continue reading→

2-1-1 Orange County Announces 2017 Point-In-Time Count and Survey

MAKING SURE EVERY ONE COUNTS!

On January 28, 2017 (4:30 a.m.-9 a.m.) in the early morning hours 2-1-1 Orange County (211-OC) along with 1500 volunteers will conduct the 7th biennial countywide homeless population Point-in-Time Count and Survey.

Point-in-Time (PIT) is a federally mandated, biennial, enumeration and survey to determine the prevalence and characteristics of persons experiencing homelessness in Orange County. PIT helps us better understand who is facing homelessness on a given night so that we can advocate for additional resources to provide services for the homeless population, ultimately ending homelessness in our community. HOMELESSNESS ALONG THE SANTA ANA RIVER

The Department has received inquiries regarding an increase in homeless/transient persons who have taken up residence along the Santa Ana River and river trail area.

The riverbed and river trail are the jurisdiction of County of Orange and the Sheriff’s Department. As such, the encampment and crime and quality of life issues related to it are not directly in our jurisdiction. The County and Sheriff’s Department have a countywide strategy in dealing with these issues; including outreach, education and enforcement. Either this relatively new encampment or the homeless/transients that have lived under the overpasses of the Santa Ana River for many years have an impact on our community when they come into town. We deal with those issues as they arise as best we can. Continue reading→

The City of Santa Ana is pleased to announce that the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has awarded seventy-five (75) vouchers for homeless veterans to the Housing Authority of the City of Santa Ana. This supportive housing assistance is provided through the HUD-Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing (HUD-VASH) Program which combines rental assistance from HUD with case management and clinical services provided by the VA. Issues at The Courtyard Transitional Center

I walked this homeless young man, Kyle from Indiana, out on the streets to the New Homeless Shelter ” The Courtyard Transitional Center” only to be chewed out by a Main Staff member regarding some photography issues that I have since resolved with The Main Person in Charge.

According to this man I’ve been taking photos inside the shelter. Of course the man had not seen me taking any photos but when asked when and what time I took the alleged pictures, he refused to answer. The unprofessionalism of The Los Angeles Midnight Mission Staff that runs the Courtyard is getting to be questionable as this is not the first time I’ve witnessed people being harassed by them. The City of Santa Ana is pleased to announce that the County of Orange has recently opened the ‘Courtyard’ a temporary transitional shelter for homeless individuals in the Civic Center. The Courtyard is located in the former Santa Ana Transit Terminal next to the Civic Center.

Further, the County of Orange entered into an agreement with Midnight Mission to provide homeless individuals with services and connections to service providers, health care, housing opportunities and a pathway to stability.  Continue reading→
