Has First District candidate Andrew Do hooked up with Brian Probolsky?

I am hearing that Orange County administrator Brian Probolsky has taken a one month leave of absence from his job at the O.C. Community Resources (after being on loan for awhile to Pat Bates, who like Janet Nguyen has left the O.C. Board of Supervisors) to help the campaign of Andrew Do, the former Chief of Staff to Nguyen. I am told that Do will retain Probolsky as his Chief of Staff if the First District Special Election goes his way.

Probolsky, moved to a position that was created for him, as Business Practices Manager at OC Community Resources, after working as a Bates staffer, in February of 2013. His new job came with an 81 percent raise, from $31 an hour to $56 an hour, according to the O.C. Register. Continue reading→

Andrew Do sends out the first campaign mailer in the race for O.C.’s First District

Andrew Do appears to be the first candidate running for Orange County’s First Supervisorial District to get a campaign mailer out. The mailer is nothing special but it serves to establish that Do is backed by a bunch of mostly white Republican elected officials – and his former boss, Janet Nguyen. Notably he does not appear to be backed by any Latinos.

I checked Do’s campaign website and there also he does not list any Latino supporters. And his campaign Facebook page only has six supporters – which is probably why he needed to get the campaign mailer out right away. Do has been out of office for awhile, having resigned from the Garden Grove City Council a few years ago. I am not sure the voters know who he is. Continue reading→

Hanging out with Democrats didn’t work out for Chris Phan

The field for the First District’s Special Election, to replace Janet Nguyen, who was elected to the 34th State Senate District in the November, 2014 General Election, is now set. The candidates include (appearing below in the order they will be placed on the ballot):

Andrew Do (R-Garden Grove), Supervisor’s Chief/Businessowner

Phan had a shot at earning the endorsement of the Republican Party of Orange County (OC GOP) tonight but he blew it when he stupidly sat down for an interview with liberal blogger Greg Diamond of the Orange Juice Blog. There might be a half dozen candidates interested in replacing Supervisor Janet Nguyen in the First Supervisorial District – but make no mistake about it, this race will come to two candidates – Andrew Do (Nguyen’s former Chief of Staff) and Lou Correa.

Do has already lined up the support of Supervisor Nguyen, along with Supervisor Pat Bates, Senator and Congresswoman-Elect Mimi Walters and Congressman Ed Royce. This means the OC GOP establishment is firmly lining up behind Do – not Garden Grove Councilman Chris Phan.

Correa already had about $600K in his campaign war chest – but now he also has the support of the Orange County Employees Association (the OCEA) and he has the backing of two high profile Republicans – OC Sheriff Sandra Hutchens and OCDA Tony Rackauckas. Continue reading→

The OC Supervisors are moving forward with the homeless shelter on Normandy Place

The Orange County Board of Supervisors is apparently going to ignore the Santa Ana City Council’s attempt to place a moratorium on the building of a homeless shelter in the middle of a poor Latino neighborhood on the East side, on Normandy Place.

The agenda for the Board of Supervisors meeting on Nov. 18, 2014, includes this item:

Direct staff to move forward with 1217 E. Normandy Place, Santa Ana, CA project; accept grant deed document to transfer fee title to County of Orange; and authorize Chief Real Estate Officer or designee to sign related documents, make minor modifications under certain conditions and perform related actions – District 1.

Why Correa is no sure bet to replace Nguyen in the First District

Now that First District County Supervisor Janet Nguyen is packing her bags for Sacramento, where she will become the State Senator in the 34th District in January, it is time to select a new Supervisor to take her place. A special election will be held in February, which means there will be very little time for the candidates to make their case to the voters.

Former Supervisor Lou Correa, who is terming out in the 34th State Senate District, wants to return to the OC Board of Supervisors. He quit the First District a few years ago when he headed to Sacramento. Nguyen took his place in the First District and in a weird bit of karma is taking his place in Sacramento now.

The Orange County Employees Association has already announced that they are endorsing Correa, on the premise that he can bring back more tax revenue to the County. Continue reading→

Janet Nguyen’s victory this week in the race for the 34th State Senate District means that she is going to vacate her seat in the First District of the Orange County Board of Supervisors, in January.

What this means is that there will be a Special Election, probably in February, to replace Nguyen.

I ran into Lou Correa at Sal Tinajero’s Election Night Party and he said he was definitely running. But there are going to be quite a few other candidates and as I understand it this will be a winner takes all election. Continue reading→

Why Quirk-Silva and Solorio lost in the 2014 General Election

Orange County Democrats were ecstatic when former Fullerton Mayor Sharon Quirk-Silva knocked off Chris Norby in 2012, in the 65th Assembly District. They partied hard but the party is over now that former Ed Royce staffer Young Kim has trounced Quirk-Silva in the 2014 General Election.

This was not a casual loss for the Democrats. It may well end up costing them their super majority in the State Assembly – an uncertain matter as several Assembly seats are still in close contention.

Make no doubt about it – retaining the 65th Assembly District was the major goal of the Democratic Party of Orange County in the 2014 General Election. They failed – and there are several good reasons for that. Continue reading→

Mayor Pulido’s daughter kept tabs on the election results on Election Night

I met with Santa Ana Mayor Miguel Pulido last night at his Election Night Party. He was relieved that he was winning but was worried he wouldn’t garner more than 50% of the vote. His 11-year-old daughter was checking the election results on her IPad last night. She has quite an interest in politics – and perhaps she will be running for office after she finishes college.

Pulido ended up with 50.7% of the vote while his challenger Roman Reyna only mustered 6,778 votes, or 33.6% of the vote. The unknown third mayoral candidate, Mark I. Lopez, netted 15.8% of the vote – likely from those who couldn’t bear voting for the other two candidates.

The bad news for Pulido was that his team of City Council challengers – Alex Padilla, Mike Gonzalez and Mirna Velasquez, all lost. If there is any good news it is that the incumbent who did the worst was David Benavides. While his colleague Michele Martinez got less votes than Benavides she had three opponents while Benavides squared off against one challenger – Padilla. Continue reading→

How does Janet Nguyen really feel about Latinos?

When Supervisor Janet Nguyen was first elected to represent the First District I advised her to be non-partisan and to reach out to her Latino constituents. She started a Hispanic Committee to advise her but I was shocked to find out that all of the committee’s members were Hispanic Republicans – and none of them lived in the First District.

A couple years ago Nguyen gerrymandered the First District to include more Vietnamese voters – and less Latino voters.

This year Nguyen not only voted to put a homeless shelter right in the middle of one of Santa Ana’s poorest neighborhoods, on Normandy Street (over on the east side of the city), she also refused to meet with the residents when they wanted to talk to her about the shelter, which they feel is too close to schools, parks and hundreds of apartments and homes.

Will Nguyen work with Latinos? Sure. But only if they are Republicans. This stands in stark contrast to the record of the man she is trying to replace in the 34th State Senate District – Lou Correa. His record shows that he will work with anyone in his district. He has been a true moderate. That is not what Nguyen is going to be. Continue reading→

Vietnamese community blasts Janet Nguyen for poverty wages

Caregivers who make just $9.30/hour will hold street demonstration in Westminster on Thursday

On October 30th, the Vietnamese community along with other members of the homecare community, are coming together to demand that Orange County Supervisor Janet Nguyen help local caregivers, seniors, and people with disabilities. Nearly 200 Vietnamese community members will gather to protest poverty wages for caregivers and demand better from our elected leaders.

In Orange County there are as many as 18,000 caregivers through the state’s In-Home Supportive Service program (IHSS), 4,000 of whom are Asian women, many are Vietnamese. Homecare workers provide care to our county’s most vulnerable residents, yet they are only paid $9.30/hour and haven’t seen a raise in over five years. Caregivers are asking the county for a seventy-five cent raise, which would be reimbursed by the state of California. Continue reading→

Late this afternoon, Thy Vo at the Voice nailed SD1 County Supervisor Janet Nguyen, who is running for the 34th State Senate District against Democrat Jose Solorio, with this news about her campaign funders: Six Nguyen Donors Admit to Political Money Laundering. Their lead:

Six donors to County Supervisor Janet Nguyen have admitted to illegally receiving reimbursements for campaign contributions, according to newly obtained documents from the state’s Fair Political Practices Commission by Voice of OC.

Have you seen the Solorio Turned his Back on Us billboard? You know the one with that fellow with a heavy beard? Well it turns out the entire campaign is a complete fraud. The people featured on the Solorio Turned his Back on Us campaign are all part of an extended family – of a young lady named Maribel Marroquin. And she is the Latino Engagement Coordinator at the Lincoln Club of Orange County, a conservative business organization that generally supports Republicans, not Democrats.

Janet Nguyen campaign donors are under investigation by the FPPC

Folks in Little Saigon know they have to bribe Janet Nguyen with bags of money

The state’s Fair Political Practices Commission is investigating nearly a dozen people for political money laundering in connection to campaign contributions to county Supervisor and state Senate candidate Janet Nguyen according to Thy Vo and Nick Gerda at the Voice of OC.

The FPPC has issued 11 subpoenas to donors who made contributions to the political committee Friends of Supervisor Janet Nguyen between 2011 and 2012, as part of an investigation involving political contributions made in the name of persons other than the true contributor, according to court records, according to the Voice of OC.
