Community: Governor Brown Acts to Extend Armory Shelter Program in Orange County

SANTA ANA, CA – Last week, the City of Santa Ana sent a letter requesting that the California National Guard consider the approval of an extension of the Orange County Cold Weather Armory Emergency Shelter Program for at least 90 days past the scheduled April 15, 2018 closure. This was followed up this week by Assemblywoman Sharon Quirk-Silva (District 65) and Assemblymember Tom Daly (District 69) requesting support from the Governor to make this request a reality.

“Now is not the time to turn our backs on some of the most vulnerable members of our community,” said Assemblywoman Quirk-Silva. “I truly appreciate the Governor’s fast response to this request,” said Assemblymember Tom Daly. Continue reading→

Criminals Voting On Crime Reform

Do we really want tightly fought Orange County election races and propositions decided by criminals who have made serious transgressions against our society or deciding on what is the definition of a crime?

On August 28, 2016, the Orange County Register printed, Imprisoned felons could determine outcome of local elections that was authored by Senator Patricia Bates. Senator Bates lamented that, with little fanfare, AB 2466 went to the Governor’s desk for signature. The measure would allow convicted felons to vote while they are still in jail or still under post-release supervision. She reminded us of recent very close election results in Orange County, with the specter of undecided races, recounts and contested elections. Do the residents of the Santa Ana Unified School District, the City of Santa Ana and the First Supervisorial District want to allow criminals from all other cities and Districts, to be able to vote on Santa Ana school board, Santa Ana municipal issues and for the closely-contested Supervisor’s race, merely because their address is in the County Jail in Santa Ana? Calif. Gov. Brown Reappoints OneOC’s Tim Strauch to California Volunteers Commission

Santa Ana, California, June 8, 2016 – Calif. Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. recently reappointed Huntington Beach resident Tim Strauch, vice president and chief operating officer at the nonprofit OneOC, to the California Volunteers Commission, where he has served since 2015.

OneOC partners with over 750 local nonprofits each year, offering volunteer opportunities that address critical community issues.

Strauch provides strategic oversight to the different divisions at OneOC including Volunteer Services, Training, Consulting and Business Services as well as the newly launched Center for Business & Community Partnerships. Continue reading→

Santa Ana Prepares for Drought

California is in its fourth year of a severe drought. In response, Governor Jerry Brown issued an Executive Order on April 1st, mandating statewide water reductions for the first time in history. The Governor’s Executive Order calls for a reduction in water usage by 25 percent statewide. To achieve these savings, the State Water Board has adopted emergency regulations to set water use reduction targets for communities around the state.

SACRAMENTO – Following the lowest snowpack ever recorded and with no end to the drought in sight, Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. today announced actions that will save water, increase enforcement to prevent wasteful water use, streamline the state’s drought response and invest in new technologies that will make California more drought resilient.

“Today we are standing on dry grass where there should be five feet of snow. This historic drought demands unprecedented action,” said Governor Brown. “Therefore, I’m issuing an executive order mandating substantial water reductions across our state. Community Alert: Santa Ana Businesses – $151 Million In Tax Credits Available Through State Program

Santa Ana, CA (January 8, 2015) – On Monday, January 5th, The Governor’s Office of Business and Economic Development (GO-Biz) opened the California Competes program and began accepting applications for businesses that want to add jobs in California. The state will provide $151 million in tax credits this fiscal year to small, medium and large companies across the state.

Last fiscal year, GO-Biz awarded $28.9 million to 29 companies that are planning to create 6,000 jobs and invest more than $2 billion in the state. Continue reading→

Governor Brown pardons over one hundred convicts

SACRAMENTO – Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. today announced that he has granted 105 pardons.

The individuals granted pardons all completed their sentences and have been released from custody for more than a decade without further criminal activity.

Individuals who have been convicted of a crime in California may apply to the Governor for a pardon. All applicants for a pardon who were eligible obtained a Certificate of Rehabilitation, which is an order from a superior court declaring that a person convicted of a crime is now rehabilitated. A gubernatorial pardon may be granted to people who have demonstrated exemplary behavior and have lived productive and law-abiding lives following their conviction. Governor signs bill that will allow community colleges to offer four year degrees

Governor Jerry Brown has signed a bill, SB 850, by Senator Marty Block (D-San Diego) that will allow community college districts to grant baccalaureate degrees. This will start out as a pilot program that will allow 15 campuses from 15 different districts to offer one baccalaureate degree each starting Jan.1, 2015 and ending in July 1, 2023. Programs would begin no later than the 2017-18 academic year.

Baccalaureate degrees offered at the chosen campuses could not be duplicative of degrees offered by the University of California (UC) or California State University (CSU) campuses. “It will be value added, not duplicative,” Block said. The state’s community college Board of Governors and Chancellor in consultation with the UC and CSU systems would select the participating districts and campuses. Continue reading→

Gov. Brown rejects State Senator Correa’s Mexico Trade Office bill

Governor Jerry Brown announced yesterday that he had declined to sign State Senator Lou Correa’s SB 928 – a bill that would have required the Governor’s Office of Economic and Business Development to open an international trade and investment office in Mexico.

In Brown’s veto message he wrote that he agreed that trade with Mexico is of significant importance. Brown mentioned that he traveled to Mexico in August of this year and he hosted the President of Mexico in Sacramento shortly thereafter. Continue reading→

GOVERNOR BROWN APPOINTS TWO TO ORANGE COUNTY SUPERIOR COURT

SACRAMENTO – Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. today announced the appointment of Thomas A. Delaney and Nancy E. Zeltzer to judgeships in the Orange County Superior Court.

Delaney, 47, of Santa Ana, has been a partner at Sedgwick LLP since 2002. He was an associate attorney at Sedgwick Detert Moran and Arnold LLP from 1995 to 2001 and at Bodkin McCarthy Sargent and Smith from 1992 to 1995. Delaney is founder and chair of the Sedgwick LLP Hispanic Lawyers Forum. He earned a Juris Doctor degree from Loyola Law School Los Angeles and a Bachelor of Arts degree from Loyola Marymount University. Delaney fills the vacancy created by the retirement of Judge B. Governor Brown sending more funds to help the SAUSD’s neediest students

“Schools will be the big winner in the governor’s new spending plan, receiving $56.2 billion in state funds, an increase by $2.7 billion over the last year. That funding is set to jump to more than $66 billion by 2016,” according to the Los Angeles Times.

“School districts would receive a 35 percent increase in per-student funding for each of their English language learners and economically disadvantaged students, and districts where more than half of students fall into those categories would automatically receive an a second 35 percent bump in per-student funding, according to the governor’s plan,” according to the O.C. Santa Ana is a city dominated by Democrats. Our city Council is entirely comprised of Democrats. Our State Assemblyman, our State Senator and our U.S. Representative are all Democrats. Yet the Democrats in Sacramento, led by Governor Jerry Brown, are trying to force the City of Santa Ana to fork over millions of dollars in redevelopment dollars that are already committed to affordable housing projects for the needy.

Mayor Miguel Pulido and our City Council say they are going to lobby Brown and his peers but they alone cannot stop this from happening. Only we can save our city!

The Santa Ana City Council is holding a Special Meeting on Friday, December 21, from 11 am – 2 pm, to consider how they are going to respond to the demand by Governor Jerry Brown’s administration that the city pay back $56 million dollars of what used to be redevelopment funds pegged to affordable housing.

The meeting will be held at the City Council Chambers, located at 22 Civic Center Plaza, in Downtown Santa Ana.

Sacramento Democrats are demanding $56 million from the City of Santa Ana

“Santa Ana city officials are scrambling to address a $56 million demand by the state due by Friday,” according to the union-funded Voice of OC. The State of California is run completely by Democrats now, from the State Legislature majority to all of the State’s elected leaders, including Governor Jerry Brown. And now they are trying to bankrupt our city!

“The money is to come from what’s called low-and-moderate income housing funds. Redevelopment agencies were required to set aside 20 percent of their property tax increment revenue – the funds that cities had diverted from going to other local governments in redevelopment zones – for affordable housing programs,” according to the Voice of OC.
