Joe Dovinh announces he will run for the 34th Senate District in 2014

Democratic 72nd Assembly District candidate Joe Dovinh, who came in third in the Open Primary on June 5, has announced that he will be running for the 34th State Senate District in 2014, in an email message he sent to supporters today.  The 34th S.D. is currently held by Lou Correa (D-Santa Ana).

Dovinh lives in Garden Grove, which appears to be entirely in the 34th.  Other cities in the 34th include Santa Ana, Seal Beach, Los Alamitos, Rossmoor, Westminster, Midway City, Fountain Valley, Huntington Beach, and part of Anaheim.  According to the final voter registration data for the 34th, 19.4% of the voters have Asian surnames and 24% of the voters in the district have Latino surnames. Did Martinez and Perez lose because they failed to attack Tom Daly?

The 69th Assembly District is Orange County’s most Latino legislative district and it is currently represented by Jose Solorio, a former Santa Ana City Council Member and OCTA lobbyist. But in this month’s Open Primary Election the candidate who got the most votes was Orange County Clerk-Recorder Tom Daly. That was due in part to the presence of four Latino candidates on the ballot – all Democrats except for one Republican. Comprehensive California High School Drop Out Audit Findings Now Available

Audit, Conducted at Request of Latino Legislative Caucus, Shows Nearly 95,000 Students of the Class of 2010 Dropped Out.  Approximately 50,000 of Those Students Were Latinos.

Food trucks aren’t making kids fat

One of my Democratic colleagues has introduced Assembly Bill 1678, which seeks to ban “mobile food vending” within 1,500 feet of elementary and secondary schools, from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on school days. Without food trucks offering their fattening foods, the theory goes, kids will eat their carrots, obesity will vanish, and students will loiter less and spend more time in the library.

If only it were that simple. Statistically, children who watch the most hours of television, or log on to computers, have the highest incidence of obesity. Are we going to legislate time spent per day on technology? Studies also show that only about one-third of elementary-age children have daily physical education, and less than one-fifth of U.S. schools offer extracurricular sports. Are we going to increase physical education time when our students need every minute of cognitive instruction our financially challenged school districts can muster? And we all know that parents who eat diets high in saturated fats also have children who do the same. Are we going to start knocking on doors to check what’s for dinner? Continue reading→

A new phone poll of voters in the 69th Assembly District, conducted by Democratic candidate Tom Daly’s campaign, shows that newcomers Julio Perez  and Francisco Barragan need to drop out now, or they are going to jeopardize the election of a Latino to represent this heavily Latino district, which is currently represented by Jose Solorio.

I expected a good turnout at Santa Ana Council Member Michele Martinez’ fundraising event tonight, which was hosted at the home of Council Member Vince Sarmiento and his wife Eva.  And sure enough, the place was packed – but that was not the entire story.
