It appears that the vultures are already circling in the 34th State Senate District where Democrat Jose Solorio got blown out in this month’s Open Primary by Republican Janet Nguyen. It wasn’t close but Solorio will now advance to the November runoff – and no one at this point thinks he has a chance to win. The politicians have taken note of the blood in the water and at least one of them, Garden Grove Councilman Chris Phan, a Republican, is telling everyone that he is all in. The special election to replace Nguyen after she packs her bags for Sacramento will be held in February of next year and it will be a winner take all election – no runoff! Continue reading

Pulido lawyers up – should the Council Members do so as well?
Santa Ana Mayor Miguel Pulido has received at least $25,000 in contributions toward a legal defense fund that he established in January as he is being investigated by the state’s political watchdog agency, according to the OC Register.
The “Miguel Pulido Legal Defense Fund” was set up in January, shortly after City Attorney Sonia Carvalho began investigating a real estate swap involving Pulido that ethics experts say looks like a bribe and could have violated state conflict of interest laws, according to the Voice of OC.
My sources tell he that a few of the Santa Ana Council Members may want to set up legal defense funds of their own. One pajarito in particular told me last week that the FBI is looking at conflict of interest by the Council Members with regard to real estate development on Bristol and Seventeenth and at the property formerly known as the Honer Plaza which is now called the Bristol Marketplace. Jose Solorio has twice as much campaign cash on hand as Janet Nguyen
I ran into two of the three candidates for the 34th State Senate District today at the Memorial Day event at Fairhaven Memorial Park and Mortuary in Santa Ana. Former Assemblyman Jose Solorio, who is currently the President of the Rancho Santiago Community College District’s Board of Trustees, was involved at the start of the program, when he introduced the young lady who won a poetry contest with an entry about Betsy Ross. Supervisor Janet Nguyen was there as well. She spoke later in the program.
Solorio was comfortable and relaxed. He sat in the RSVP area next to Santa Ana Chief of Police Carlos Rojas. Nguyen on the other hand was visibly nervous as she clutched the podium, and her speech was stilted and poorly enunciated. She kept saying, for example, “de-mock-acy,” instead of “democracy.” And she referred to “men and women” she repeatedly said “men and woman.” It was quite awkward.
Perhaps Nguyen was a bit nervous about the news that “Solorio has the money lead as of the end of the most recent campaign finance filing period, which extended from the March 18 through May 17. Solorio had about $580,000 to spend at the end of the filing period, whereas Nguyen’s campaign had about $283,000 on hand,” as reported by the Long Beach Press Telegram. Continue reading

The OC Firefighter’s union appears to have paid off Janet Nguyen
The county firefighters union had donated $4,000 to county Supervisor Janet Nguyen’s state Senate campaign, according to the OC Register.
That didn’t please OC GOP Chairman Scott Baugh, who has a policy of not issuing party endorsements to candidates who accept union money. But apparently there is a loophole as the Baugh edict applies only to local,non-partisan offices. Continue reading

Daly and Nguyen agree when it comes to opposing Latino voter turnout
Think about it. Tom Daly, a career Democratic politician who is representing the 69th Assembly District – the most Hispanic legislative seat in Orange County, and Janet Nguyen, the Republican County Supervisor who is running for the 34th State Senate District, are both in the same hot seat. Both have been challenged by popular Latino candidates. Daly is facing off in the June Primary against SAUSD Trustee Ceci Iglesias while Nguyen is being opposed by a college Trustee, Jose Solorio, who previously served in the 69th Assembly District.
I know for a fact that Solorio is thrilled that Nguyen is in the race as she is so corrupt that it is going to be easy for him to slam her in the mail. He won’t do that now as he will hold his fire for the November General Election. And as we wrote earlier this week, Solorio is very busy overseeing a massive Latino voter registration effort in Central Orange County.
Nguyen could not have been pleased to see Iglesias get into the race against Daly. Iglesias will bring out the Latino vote and they will surely vote for Solorio, not Nguyen, in the 34th State Senate District. I don’t see much crossover vote for Nguyen from Iglesias supporters. Not after what she did to CalOptima, the public agency that oversees health benefits for OC seniors. Continue reading
Will Solorio’s efforts to register Latino voters cost Daly his Assembly seat?
Say what you will about Jose Solorio, but he knows the score. As the Democratic Party’s sole candidate in the race to replace Lou Correa in the 34th State Senate District, Solorio is quite aware that he must pull out all the stops in order to beat the leading Republican candidate, and Queen of corruption, Janet Nguyen, in what is a very purple district. Continue reading
With all her baggage, should Janet Nguyen even be running for SD34?
From the OC Political Blog
The heat’s still on. First District County Supervisor Janet Nguyen, the Orange County GOP’s Local Elected Official of the Year, has been fingered AGAIN by the union-funded Voice of OC for conspiring with two CalOptima Board members to ignore a Federal audit critical of their leadership: CalOptima Leaders Shelved Critical Audit. Tracy Wood reports:
The move killed a chance to fix at least some potential problems as much as a year before federal auditors discovered one of CalOptima’s programs posed a “serious threat to the health and safety” of participants. According to meeting records and emails, Nguyen and CalOptima board Vice Chairman Lee Penrose, who is president and CEO of St. Jude Hospital in Fullerton, put off making a decision on which firm to hire. County Health Care Agency Director Mark Refowitz, who became board chairman during the process, didn’t act to ensure that the work was done.

LOCAL JOBS-GENERATING AGREEMENT CHAMPIONED BY COMMUNITY COLLEGE TRUSTEE JOSE SOLORIO
Unique Community and Student Workforce Project Agreement Includes “Local Hire” and “Helmets To Hardhats” Requirements for Construction Projects
Santa Ana, CA — The Rancho Santiago Community College District (RSCCD) Board of Trustees approved an agreement yesterday that will create thousands of local jobs while improving education facilities at Santa Ana College.
The agreement requires 66 percent of all those hired to work on upcoming construction projects at Santa Ana College to live in Orange County and 50 percent to live within the college district’s jurisdiction cities, including Garden Grove, Santa Ana, Anaheim, Orange, Tustin, Irvine and Villa Park. The measure will also help veterans to enter and succeed in construction through a “helmets to hardhats” program that has been implemented successfully in other communities. Present and past RSCCD students in local construction apprenticeship programs will also benefit under the agreement’s local hire program. Continue reading

Who put Sherry Walker on the ballot in the 69th Assembly District?
We will know by Monday who it is that signed Sherry Walker’s nomination papers to put her on the ballot for the 69th Assembly District. A friend of mine is going to retrieve the nomination signatures from the Orange County Registrar of Voters.
Walker, an unknown Republican, came out of nowhere to challenge for the seat that is currently held by Tom Daly, a career politician, and Democrat, who has previously serves as the Mayor of Anaheim and the O.C. Clerk-Recorder. Wherever he has gone he as reveled in political favors, nepotism and the wanton waste of taxpayer money. Continue reading
Popular SAUSD Trustee Iglesias is challenging Daly for the 69th A.D.
Assemblyman Tom Daly won’t be getting a free pass in the June primary election after all! Santa Ana Unified School District Trustee Cecilia “Ceci” Iglesias will be challenging him as will a lady I never heard of named Sherry Walker.
Iglesias was the top vote-getter when she ran for the SAUSD School Board in 2012. She previously gathered 10,000 nominating signatures when she ran for Congress as an independent in 2010. She is now a Republican. Continue reading
