This week’s Cochino List includes Lola Gaspar and El Tapatio

The OC Health Care Agency has released a list of the eateries (including restaurants, caterers and even school kitchens) that they inspected and shut down for the week of July 27 to Aug. 3, 2018. Most of these eateries reopen pretty quickly after the health inspectors determine their issues have been resolved. Here is the list:

  • Lola Gaspar, 211 W. Second St., Santa Ana, Closed: Aug. 2, Reason: Cockroach infestation
  • El Tapatio, 1214 E. Pomona St., Santa Ana, Closed: July 30, Reason: Rodent infestation
  • Phat Ky Mi Gia, 14140 Brookhurst St., Garden Grove, Closed: Aug. 1, Reason: Cockroach infestation, Reopened: Aug. 2
  • Sichuan Impression, 13816 Red Hill Ave., Tustin, Closed: July 30, Reason: Cockroach infestation, Reopened: July 31

A bartender accidentally set a woman on fire at DTSA’s Lola Gaspar this morning

A Lola Gaspar Bartender

An unidentified woman was burned at the Lola Gaspar restaurant located at 211 West 2nd St. in DTSA shortly after midnight on New Year’s Eve after a bartender lit liquor on fire, according to the O.C. Register.

Authorities said a bartender poured alcohol onto the bar at Lola Gaspar and lit it on fire, according to ABC News. Somehow the woman’s hair and face caught fire, just after midnight, according to the SAPD. Continue reading→

Lola Gaspar, a restaurant in Downtown Santa Ana, will be hosting a Donald Trump piñata bash and a barbecue on July 25, 2015, from 12 noon to 3 pm, according to the OC Weekly.

They will have five Trump piñatas available for us to smash!  The menu that day will include tri-tip, roasted corn, al pastor tacos, and frozen margaritas. Continue reading→

Orange County Supervisor Todd Spitzer has requested that the Health Care Agency update the issue of the public’s right to know about restaurant health and sanitation issues, which the Board of Supervisors last dealt with in 2008.  That was the year the Orange County Grand Jury recommended letter grade health ratings for restaurants.

The 2007-2008 Orange County Grand Jury concluded that the procedure for notifying the public in Orange County about the cleanliness and safety of neighborhood restaurants is almost non-existent.  They were right.  It still is.  Oh you can ask a restaurant for their inspection reports, but who does that?

Updated: Review of Downtown Santa Ana’s bar and restaurant health violations

We took a look at the  the health and safety violations given to Downtown Santa Ana’s bars and restaurants by the Orange County Health Care Agency, after this year’s “Taste of Santa Ana.”   The result?  Pandemonium set in.  Now we have looked up their violations again and guess what?  Most of these restaurants are still a mess.

Remember that thanks to our lame Orange County Supervisors, in particular Supervisor Janet Nguyen, our County does not use letter health grades for bars and restaurants.  Unless you look up these establishments in advance, here, you will have no idea what you are getting into.

Posse on Broadway A Downtown Santa Ana Block Party

Posse’s back in town! The first edition of the downtown Santa Ana block party rolls into town this Saturday, June 18th, from 9 pm to 12 am.

This event started 4 years ago with 3 venues looking to spark a little nightlife in the neighborhood. The event has grown now to 11 venues and it is looking to get even bigger in the coming months.

This year, the Posse is going beyond Broadway to include some great locations down 1st, 3rd & 4th Street. There will be live entertainment at each venue and most all participants will be open till 2am.

There will also be free admission at all venues. So bring your friends, tell your family, leave the kids at home and get yourself downtown for a night of fun. This is downtown Santa Ana nightlife.

Santa Ana Artists Village

The Santa Ana Artists Village Open House is this Saturday night!

The Santa Ana Artist Village Art Walk is held every first Saturday of the month, rain or shine. The event starts at 7pm and runs through 10 p.m.

This is free for all to attend and enjoy the atmosphere. Come, introduce yourself to a local artist, invite your friends, grab a bite, lot’s to do in Santa Ana Artist’s Village.

Parking can be found in the ‘Artists Village Parking Structure’ at Third Street and Broadway.

Walk through the galleries and studios, see a live performance or just hang out and enjoy the music.
