A forum for Santa Ana mayoral candidates is set for 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 26 at Latino Health Access, 450 W. Fourth St., according to the O.C. Register.
The forum, sponsored by Voice of OC, the non-profit health agency and other groups, will focus on youth issues.
Six candidates are seeking the post in the November election, including incumbent Miguel Pulido and Councilman David Benavides. Continue reading
It is hard to believe that the Santa Ana Unified School District’s Board of Education, which consists of five Trustees, includes only one woman – longtime Trustee Audrey Noji. Or that the Santa Ana City Council only has two women – Mayor Pro Tem Claudia Alvarez and Council Member Michele Martinez. After November that number will be down to one, as Alvarez is termed out. There are five men on the Santa Ana City Council.
What is up with that? Figure that over half of our electorate must be made up of women. Are they voting? Are they voting for men? Are there not enough women running for office in Santa Ana? Continue reading
Santa Ana mayoral candidate George Collins is best known in town for one thing – he always brings a video camera along, wherever he goes. He brought his camera early in September to the Connect to Council Santa Ana Council Candidates Forum.
The footage of the Council candidates was marred by poor sound, which was the fault of the event organizers and the facility, not Collins, but his mayoral candidate footage came out pretty sharp. You can see it atop this post. Continue reading
Santanero Zine, a publication written by members of the artist community in Santa Ana, is having a fun contest just in time for Halloween, the Dia de los Muertos and the upcoming Nov. 6 General Election. Santanero would like artists to submit their paintings/drawings of any mayoral candidate of their choice as a zombie.

The Orange County Lincoln Club PAC has endorsed Tea Party Republican Charles Hart for the Santa Ana City Council, even though he is a government worker, but ignored small businessman George Collins, the OC GOP-endorsed candidate for Santa Ana Mayor, and Lupe Moreno, the Minuteman who is also running for Santa Ana Mayor.
They also inexplicably blew off newly minted Republican Karina Onofre, who is running for Ward 5 against the DPOC-endorsed Roman Reyna, but they did endorse Cecilia Iglesias for the SAUSD School Board. Continue reading
Can you spot all the Usual Suspect Mayoral candidates in this photo?
Santa Ana Mayoral candidate George Collins gloated on Facebook today because his name is going to appear first on the ballot, as per the California Secretary of State’s random drawing, which determined the order of the candidates on the November ballot. But does Collins have a chance to beat the incumbent, Mayor Miguel Pulido?
The fact is, there are too many candidates running against Pulido, ant to make matters worse for Collins, he is fighting over the same voters with two other challengers – Minuteman Lupe Moreno and Santa Ana Council Member David Benavides. All three of them are hoping to get the Usual Suspect vote, but there really aren’t enough of those votes left in town to matter, even if one of the candidates were able to garner all of their votes. Is it any surprise to anyone that Santa Ana Council Member David Benavides chose to break the news that he is running against Santa Ana Mayor Miguel Pulido on the Republican OC Political blog? That is exactly what I have come to expect from Benavides.
When Benavides was first elected, back in 2006, he had a great story to offer. He had come to Santa Ana as part of a ministry and he decided to stay here and put down roots. But he very quickly was compromised by Santa Ana’s racist old guard – the Usual Suspects. Mostly old and angry Republicans they brought him up through the Neighborhood Association movement – which pretends to represent the people of Santa Ana but realistically represents at most 1% of our community – and is heavily subsidized by our tax dollars. He declared on his Smart Voter page that he was the winner of the “Neighborhood Hero Award,” the penultimate badge of honor for these metiches. Continue reading
It turns out that Santa Ana Council Member Carlos Bustamante’s last hurrah was the 2nd Annual Santa Ana Independence Day event at Centennial Park, which was held last Sunday. He was arrested the very next day, after parking his car in a parking structure at City Hall, on charges of sex crimes and public theft.
One of the things that always bothered me about Bustamante was his overstated patriotism and gung ho attitude towards public safety. It always felt fake to me. He once compared himself to movie character Forrest Gump, a pretty dumb guy who made out over time by being in the right place at the right time. That is the story of Bustamante’s life. The Lincoln Club of Orange County’s State and Federal Political Action Committees have issued a primary election Orange County voter guide, and it is a stunning slap to the Republican Party of Orange County’s slate of candidates in Central Orange County.
Why would the Lincoln Club reject them? Well, for starters, most of them are startlingly anti-Latino. One of them, Robert Hammond, got rejected not once but twice – the Lincoln Club refused to endorse him for both the OC GOP’s 69th Assembly District delegation and the Orange County Board of Education, Area One. OC Political blogger Chris Nguyen posted an article today poking fun at the top 10 worst ballot designations, pertaining to Orange County political candidates in the upcoming June primary. His list includes a couple of Santa Ana residents – Lupe Moreno and Glen Stroud. The Friends of the Santa Ana Library are actively opposing the possible outsourcing of the City of Santa Ana’s public library system – which would entail joining the Orange County Public Library system, according to the O.C. Register. Their President, Sue Stewart, told the Register, ““Any time you become larger, you lose flexibility and services in order to serve a larger population and culture.”
Stewart also said, “This library says we are open to help you serve your needs. It is a place to get assistance without being judged.” Really? Well, the fact is, Lupe Moreno, the notorious Minuteman (hater of Mexican immigrants) is the manager of the Santa Ana Friends of the Library bookstore, according to their website. How are you supposed to take these people seriously when their board includes Moreno, who advocated deporting many of our residents? Talk about being judged!
