Assemblyman Solorio’s Statement Regarding the Announcement of the “Latest” Selected Bidder to Buy the Orange County Fairgrounds
SACRAMENTO, CA – State Assemblyman Jose Solorio issued this statement regarding today’s announcement of the Department of General Services’ selection of a new bid in the third round of the Governor’s attempt to sell the Orange County Fairgrounds.
“The citizens of our county want to keep the Orange County Fairgrounds under public ownership. I and others will continue to fight to preserve the OC Fair, the equestrian facility and the talented staff that run the fairgrounds.
Therefore, on December 6th, I will introduce new legislation to stop the sale, and I will consider other legislation as developments dictate.
Like last year’s effort to stop the initial sale, I expect strong bipartisan support for the bill. And come January, we will have a new Governor that will be open to hearing our county’s interests.
On a related note, I also remind the Governor that his Request for Proposals (RFP) states that the sale would be subject to legislative approval. He should keep this promise. On page 12 of the RFP, it’s written, ‘Subject to Department and legislative approval, the Department intends to execute a Purchase and Sale Agreement with the bidder deemed to have offered a bid that best complies with the State’s objective of obtaining the highest and most certain return for the Property.’
It makes no sense to lose forever our county’s link to the past just for a small and fleeting financial gain, especially in a down real estate environment. I urge this governor and candidates Brown and Whitman to stop the sale once again.”

Meg Whitman just doesn’t get it. She opened an office in Santa Ana, ostensibly to reach out to Latino voters, but now her new Meg Whitman Santa Ana Facebook page includes Minuteman Lupe Moreno, who wants to get rid of many of Santa Ana’s Latino residents. No bueno Meg!
Any kind of Latino outreach that includes Minutemen isn’t outreach at all.
To make matters worse for Ms. Meg, she only has 16 friends on this page! Lame.
Besides Moreno, Santa Ana Councilman Carlos Bustamante has been seen at Meg’s Santa Ana office. He is also actively campaigning for Van Tran, who is running against Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez.
I finally found some video of the protest at Meg Whitman’s Santa Ana office. Kudos to the Dream Teamers for showing up and letting Whitman know what we think of her here in Santa Ana!
It is ironic that Whitman opened her Santa Ana office the same week that her latest scandal broke out – she fired a housekeeper taht worked for her for nine years and turned out to be undocumented. Click here to read about that.
Protesters showed up today in Santa Ana, at the new Meg Whitman campaign office. And guess who showed up to visit with the Whitman staff? None other than Santa Ana Councilman Carlos Bustamante and Minuteman Lupe Moreno.
I ran against Bustamante, who is a Republican, two years ago, and was amazed when the supposedly Democratic bloggers at the Liberal OC joined forces with the Republican bloggers at the Red County blog, and Nick Berardino and his lame OCEA, to attack me with nasty mail pieces. Sure enough, Bustamante won, even though I came away with over ten thousand votes. And now Bustamante is actively campaigning for Van Tran and Meg Whitman. I hope Berardino and the Lib OC bloggers are proud of themselves!
Kudos to the Dream Teamers who showed up today to let Whitman have it. I wish I could have been there but I had to cook dinner and pick up my second grader from school.
Apparently Republican Senate candidate Carly Fiorina also showed up in Santa Ana today, where she spoke at a business owned by a friend of business owner Mike Tardiff, who often comments at the Liberal OC blog. She spoke about jobs even though she outsourced thousands of jobs when she ran HP.
Whitman and Fiorina can pander here in Santa Ana all they want, but Latino voters know better than to vote for either of them! The fact that Lupe Moreno is showing up to work at Whitman’s office speaks for itself.
Moreno made headlines this summer when Santa Ana Councilman David Benavides chose to honor her, after she and her Minutemen took over the Santa Ana Independence Day event. We dubbed that scandal “Hatergate.” When we had Benavides on last week’s Orange Juice blog radio show he once again defended Moreno. Well Benavides, what do you think now that she is working to get Whitman elected? I wonder if Benavides knows that Whitman’s Campaign Chairman is former Governor Pete “Prop. 187” Wilson?
Republican gubernatorial nominee Meg Whitman has opened a campaign office in Santa Ana, at 4th and Broadway. This is such an insult to our Latino residents. Whitman’s campaign chairman is none other than former Governor Pete “Prop. 187” Wilson!
Fortunately our people are not taking this lying down. Protesters are going to be at the Whitman office today at 4pm. They ask that you bring signs.
Whitman is wasting her time and money. “Latino voters, who have helped to propel California’s leftward political swing over recent years, remain reluctant to embrace Republican candidates as the November general election nears, a new Los Angeles Times/USC poll shows,” according to the L.A. Times.
Registered voters who identified themselves as Latino backed Democrat Jerry Brown by a 19-point margin over RepublicanMeg Whitman in the race for governor, despite Whitman’s multiple appeals to Latino voters during the general election campaign. Registered voters who identified themselves as white gave Brown a slim 2-point margin.
Whitman isn’t fooling us at all! Be sure to show up to today’s protest and let her know we aren’t going to vote for her and we don’t want her in our downtown!

There is an incredible amount of hullabaloo being made about Ms. Cecilia Iglesias, an Independent candidate running in the 47th Congressional District, because an image of her was caught in a photograph squeezing Meg Whitman, the mega-billionaire who thinks she can use her vast fortune to buy her way into the Governor’s office.
Frank Barbaro, Chairman of the Democratic Party of Orange County, recently stated in an email posted on the DPOC website that “voting records show that Ceci walks like a Republican, talks like a Republican and votes as a Republican…. I think she needs to explain why she is so embarrassed about being a Republican.”
Although I’ve thought about casting my ballot for Ms. Iglesias as a protest vote against both Loretta Sanchez and Van Tran, the photograph of her hugging Whitmann almost made me throw up, to be quite frank with you. But honestly, I would have felt just as nauseous if I saw a photograph of her with Jerry Brown.
Despite my dislike for “Queen Meg,” I’m smart enough to realize the photograph doesn’t mean that Ms. Iglesias supports or even agrees with of her on various issues. And so far I haven’t heard Mr. Barbaro complain about the fact she posed for the above photograph with Democratic State Senator Lou Correa.

Frank Barbaro, the Chairman of the Democratic Party of Orange County, had a fit today because independent Congressional candidate Cecilia Iglesias got caught in a picture with Meg Whitman, the Republican candidate for Governor, over at the O.C. Register.
Hard to blame Iglesias. I can’t stand Whitman, but the California Democrats failed to recruit ANY Latinos for statewide office – and the best they could do for Governor was to nominate a retread who is doing a poor job of reaching out to Latinos, while Whitman is pandering non-stop to Latino voters.
Barbaro sent out an email statement: “Voting records show that Ceci walks like a Republican, talks like a Republican and votes as a Republican. While she may have ‘changed’ her party registration to Decline to State in 2009 so that she could qualify for the charade of running in the 47th Congressional District in 2010, she requested GOP ballots for elections in 2008 and 2006. I think she needs to explain why she is so embarrassed about being a Republican.”
Fair enough, but why isn’t Barbaro saying anything about John Leos, the Republican candidate for the Anaheim City Council who is actually a shill for the Orange County Employees Association? Leos has the support of a bunch of Democrats – even though there are two good Democrats in that race – Bill Dalati and John Santoianni. C’mon Barbaro – why are you sticking up for Sanchez but not for Dalati and Santoianni?

What about the Orange City Council candidate Robert Louis Douglas, who Barbaro and the DPOC endorsed this year even though the guy is an immigrant basher? Click here to read all about that.
And where was Barbaro’s ire in 2008, when the turncoat Liberal OC bloggers crawled in bed with Red County editor Matt Cunningham and GOP consultant Mike Schroeder, as well as the OCEA, and a bunch of Van Tran’s acolytes, to attack my campaign for the Santa Ana City Council – when I was running against Republican Carlos Bustamante? Boy did that blow up in their face – Bustamante won and now he is hosting fundraisers for Van Tran, the Republican opponent to Sanchez!
And of course Barbaro said nothing when Lib OC favorite David Benavides got caught and exposed this week at the OC Weekly, trying to split the vote in Ward 6, to help Republican Thomas Gordon to take out Democrat incumbent Sal Tinajero. Fortunately Gordon failed to get enough signatures to qualify for the ballot.
Barbaro was also silent when we exposed Benavides working with a bunch of Republicans and Minutemen, including Gordon, when the latter took over the Santa Ana Independence Day event this year. One of Lupe Moreno’s henchmen even called our residents wetbacks! The silence from Barbaro was deafening.
It’s easy for Barbaro to pick on Iglesias. He even let the stalkers at the Liberal OC post her home address, even though she is a single mother! But is any of this really her fault?
Sanchez has spent years kissing up to her Viet constituents, but she has ignored the Latino community. Sanchez dresses up in Viet clothing and prances around the Tet Parade every year, but I cannot recall the last time I saw her at Santa Ana’s Fiestas Patrias Parade. And why did it take so damn long for Sanchez to support the Dream Act? Iglesias has always supported the Dream Teamers, even as Barbaro’s pals at the Liberal OC have ripped them at every opportunity!
Sanchez has also not been very vocal about opposing the Bush wars in Iraq and Afghanistan either.
Now Sanchez and Barbaro are freaking out about Iglesias. Well, you folks did this to yourselves. You want to blame someone? Look in the mirror. You took your base for granted. Come November 2, you just might pay for it.
Campaign spokeswoman Sarah Pompei confirmed that Meg Whitman is opening an office in Santa Ana and said that it will “help our get-out-the-vote efforts for Meg and the entire Republican ticket,” according to the O.C. Register.
The Whitman office will be on Fourth Street, in a former Western Wear store.
I find it highly unlikely that many residents of Santa Ana will be inclined to vote for Whitman and her GOP cohorts. Her campaign chairman is former Governor Pete Wilson, who championed the infamous Prop. 187.
Here is how an L.A. Times reporter assessed Whitman’s attempt to court the Latino vote:
Strategists from both parties agree that Whitman must win at least a third of the Latino vote to stay competitive in this blue state. No one realistically sees her winning a majority, but her flood-the-zone strategy has paid early dividends: A Field poll released in early July found the race a tossup and Brown leading among solidly Democratic Latinos by 50 percent to 39 percent, according to Politico.com.
Latinos should not buy into Whitman’s B.S. A vote for Whitman is a vote for the very same Republicans who have been bashing our people for several years. No se puede Meg!
Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez has filed paperwork with the California Secretary of State so she can raise money for a gubernatorial bid in 2014, according to the Sacramento Bee.
This is interesting timing given that she is in a tough reelection battle this year versus Republican Assemblyman Van Tran.
Sanchez reported transferring roughly $3,200 from her 2010 gubernatorial fundraising effort to the new account, which was opened late last week.
If Sanchez wins, and Republican gubernatorial nominee Meg Whitman wins, we could end up seeing a Sanchez versus Whitman race in 2014. Wouldn’t that be something?
Whitman first has to beat this year’s Democratic nominee Jerry Brown.
Democrats lead Republicans in the 47th Congressional District by 16 points, which favors Sanchez. However there are fears in the Democratic Party that Latinos will not vote in November – and that Republicans will. The 47th also features a lot of Vietnamese voters – and many of them are Tran supporters.
