Community activist Naui heard that the Minutemen were protesting in Santa Ana on December 10, 2014, and he visited them with his video camera in tow. The results are predictably hilarious as Naui keeps asking the Minutemen why they hate Mexicans. Continue reading

Benavides hit in the mail for honoring the Minutemen
Well, you had to know this was coming. Santa Ana Mayoral challenger David Benavides got slammed in the mail today for honoring Lupe Moreno and her fellow Minutemen in 2010. Continue reading
How Mayoral candidate Benavides ended up honoring the Minutemen
Hatergate: How Council Member David Benavides ended up honoring the Minutemen in July, 2010
By: Art Pedroza
It started out innocently enough. The City of Santa Ana didn’t have the budget to put on their own 4th of July event, back in July of 2010, so they allowed a group of residents to put on their own event – and the City’s Parks and Recreation Agency let them use the Santa Ana Public Library, over in the Civic Center, to stage the event.
It made sense I suppose to have a Library Commissioner run the show. She was also at the time heading up the Friends of the Library. But upon closer scrutiny, there was a major problem. The lady in question was Lupe Moreno, a notorious Minuteman. These are folks who absolutely hate immigrants and who have been accused of hate crimes. When Moreno found herself needing more volunteers it was her Minutemen friends who got the call. Continue reading
Lupe Moreno, Minuteman, running for Mayor of Santa Ana
Lupe Moreno, perhaps the most notorious of Orange County’s Minutemen, has filed to run for Mayor of Santa Ana, according to the O.C. Register.
Moreno has a long history of running for office in Santa Ana and in Orange County, as follows:
- Moreno ran for the SAUSD School Board in 2000, garnering half the votes that her nemesis Nativo Lopez got as he won, according to Smart Voter.
- Moreno almost won a seat on the SAUSD School Board, in 2002, losing by 1.5% to Audrey Noji, according to Smart Voter.
- In 2004, she was listed as an endorser by Roman Reyna, who at the time was running for the Santa Ana City Council. Continue reading
Why I won’t be voting for Benavides in November
Is it any surprise to anyone that Santa Ana Council Member David Benavides chose to break the news that he is running against Santa Ana Mayor Miguel Pulido on the Republican OC Political blog? That is exactly what I have come to expect from Benavides.
When Benavides was first elected, back in 2006, he had a great story to offer. He had come to Santa Ana as part of a ministry and he decided to stay here and put down roots. But he very quickly was compromised by Santa Ana’s racist old guard – the Usual Suspects. Mostly old and angry Republicans they brought him up through the Neighborhood Association movement – which pretends to represent the people of Santa Ana but realistically represents at most 1% of our community – and is heavily subsidized by our tax dollars. He declared on his Smart Voter page that he was the winner of the “Neighborhood Hero Award,” the penultimate badge of honor for these metiches. Continue reading
Santa Ana residents would get better service under the O.C. Library system
The Friends of the Santa Ana Library are actively opposing the possible outsourcing of the City of Santa Ana’s public library system – which would entail joining the Orange County Public Library system, according to the O.C. Register. Their President, Sue Stewart, told the Register, ““Any time you become larger, you lose flexibility and services in order to serve a larger population and culture.”
Stewart also said, “This library says we are open to help you serve your needs. It is a place to get assistance without being judged.” Really? Well, the fact is, Lupe Moreno, the notorious Minuteman (hater of Mexican immigrants) is the manager of the Santa Ana Friends of the Library bookstore, according to their website. How are you supposed to take these people seriously when their board includes Moreno, who advocated deporting many of our residents? Talk about being judged! Here is a video of Moreno calling the children of many our residents “anchor babies:” Continue reading
Don’t let the Minutemen take over this year’s Santa Ana 4th of July event!
Do you recall that last year the Minutemen took over the Santa Ana 4th of July event? We raised a stink after one of them got caught on video calling a Mexican-American Santa Ana resident a “wetback.” That whole scandal ended up being called “Hatergate,” after Santa Ana Councilman David Benavides honored Minuteman Lupe Moreno and the rest of her committee, while the rest of the City Council walked out of Chambers in protest.
Now Benavides and Republican Councilman Carlos Bustamante are working with Gerardo Mouet-Executive Director of Parks, Recreation and Community Services Agency – on plans for the City’s July 4th event this year.
You will have an opportunity to provide input on the 2011 July 4th event. This is very important as last year the 4th of July committee was totally dominated by Republicans.
This meeting is scheduled as follows:
Date: Thursday, April 7, 2011
Time: 5:30 p.m.
Location: SAPD Community Room (60 Civic Center Plaza)
Info: Santa Ana Neighborhood Improvement – (714) 667-2260
I think it is worth reminding folks that Mexican-Americans love the idea of independence too. Mexican patriots defeated both the Spanish and the French, on their soil. And they have remained proudly independent ever since. They in fact celebrated 200 years of independence last year.
What few Americans remember today is that Spain, and its Mexican and New World territories, helped the American patriots to defeat England. In fact I would say that without their help we would be living in a British satellite today. Here are a few facts to consider, from this online source:
Spain helped the Patriots in four ways, but not openly: money loaned, money given; a clandestine world trading company to provide war materiel and to bring European military leaders to America; opening literally a second front; and sending Spanish observers to America.
The first recorded moneys were two million livres in hard currency and war materiel. Thus, the United States currency, the Continental, was secured by Spanish silver dollars. Two additional sums were noted: the first, $74,087.00, was loaned to Patriots Oliver Pollock and Thomas Willing and, second, $174,011.00 to John Jay, United States Emissary to Spain. Another source was King Carlos III’s August 17, 1780 Royal Order asking Spanish and Indian males in the Americas to donate two dollars and one dollar respectively in equivalent goods, the records of which were sent to Mexico City for distribution — a mystery of history not quite solved, although rumors abound. Fr. Serra, Father President of Alta California, called this a “war tax.” The government of Alta California sent $4,216.00.
This project provided war material and brought European military leaders to the Patriots through a “dummy” world trading company — Roderique Hortalez et Cie. Based in Paris, but operated out of St. Eustatius in the Lesser Antilles, the Bourbon Kings of Spain and France each provided one million livres to start the company in May of 1776, six weeks before the Declaration of Independence. The materiel and leaders were sent via ships from St. Eustatius to Portsmouth, New Hampshire; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Charleston, South Carolina and New Orleans in the Spanish Province of Louisiana, then up the Mississippi and Ohio rivers and across the Braddock and Bedford roads. For example, Patriots received this support for the Battle of Saratoga and during the Northwest campaigns led by George Rogers Clark. Baron F. W. Augustus von Steuben was brought to Valley Forge with these funds as were Casimir Pulaski, Thaddeus Kosciuszko et al for other Patriot activities.
Spain literally started another military front against the British as soon as war was declared in 1779. Governor of Louisiana, Count Bernardo de Galvez, received orders to take back forts the Spanish had lost to the British in 1763. September 6, 1779, Galvez took Ft. Bute at Manchas in the Mississippi River Valley with no losses to Spain. Taking the fort at Baton Rouge was a more formidable task, but the Spanish captured it September 20. Galvez next secured the peaceful surrender of Natchez October 5. The next year, Galvez led his forces to capture Mobile, West Florida. The attack on Pensacola in 1781 was on land and sea with Galvez Commander-in-Chief; however, Joseph Calvo de Irazabel led the fleet from Havana. Pensacola proved to be the most difficult of the three-year campaign, although, again Spain triumphed. There was one more battle between Spain and Britain May 8, 1782 when Spain regained the Bahamas from England. Although more military action was planned, negotiations for the Treaty of Paris 1783 had begun, and hostilities ceased in the Atlantic and along its seaboard. Protection of Spanish treasure ships from British pirates continued from the Spanish Main (Cartegena and Bilboa to Havana to Cadiz) and from Manila to the Sandwich Islands (Hawaii) to Acapulco.
Much less is known about major military actions in the Pacific. Since 1768, Spain had a major port and shipbuilding center at San Blas on the west coast of Mexico in addition to Acapulco. More than 20 ships plus treasure galleons operated on a regular schedule supplying Pacific Coast missions, presidios and pueblos as well as trading up and down the coast, across the Pacific and in the Far East. Skirmishes were reported between Spanish and British ships during the American Revolution. Explorations of the northern Pacific also took place in what is known today as Vancouver Island, Glacier Bay, Prince William Sound and Unalaska where lands were claimed and lookouts established for Russian and English ships.
One of the greatest impacts of the Spanish navy was keeping the English in the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico from reinforcing Cornwallis at Yorktown October 1781.
These were sent to United States in much the same way that the Patriots sent Commissioners to Europe. The first and best known was Juan de Miralles who became a partner in the trading firm of Robert Morris and Thomas Willing. Miralles and George Washington also became personal friends and professional correspondents.

Given this rich history of Spanish and Mexican contributions to the American victory over the British in our Revolutionary War, perhaps we should have a children’s choir, maybe from El Sol, sing the Star Spangled Banner in Español?
Facebook friends of the Santa Ana Meg Whitman page include Lupe Moreno
Meg Whitman just doesn’t get it. She opened an office in Santa Ana, ostensibly to reach out to Latino voters, but now her new Meg Whitman Santa Ana Facebook page includes Minuteman Lupe Moreno, who wants to get rid of many of Santa Ana’s Latino residents. No bueno Meg!
Any kind of Latino outreach that includes Minutemen isn’t outreach at all.
To make matters worse for Ms. Meg, she only has 16 friends on this page! Lame.
Besides Moreno, Santa Ana Councilman Carlos Bustamante has been seen at Meg’s Santa Ana office. He is also actively campaigning for Van Tran, who is running against Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez.
Mayor Miguel Pulido may have already won
In a stunner, four challengers qualified today to run for Mayor of Santa Ana, perhaps dooming the campaign of Alfredo Amezcua, the former Rancho Santiago Community College District Trustee who was the first announced opponent to the incumbent, Mayor Miguel Pulido.
The other challengers include Charles Hart, a Republican and county government worker who is trying to pass the California bar exam; Roy Alvarado, whose nomination signatures are still being verified; and past mayoral candidate George Collins, a documentary filmmaker and Republican who lives in Ward 6. Collins received 13.8% of the vote in 2008, when he first opposed Pulido, according to Smart Voter. In 2006, Collins ran for the Santa Ana City Council, receiving 16.9% of the vote, according to Smart Voter.
Alvarado is registered as a Decline to State voter. He is a retired contractor who is originally from New Mexico. It is telling that you cannot find him on Facebook. Nor can you find any pictures of him online. He often speaks at Council meetings, where he tends to oppose most things.
If Amezcua had been the sole opponent he might have had a shot. Now the opposition vote will be split and essentially nullified.
In related news, Councilmember Michele Martinez did not draw an opponent, in Ward 2. She has promised on Facebook to walk precincts for her fellow Council incumbents.
In Ward 4, Councilmember David Benavides also drew a free pass. He has been in the headlines of late for his alliance with known gay-bashers and Mexican-haters Lupe Moreno and former SAUSD Trustee Rosie Avila, as well as a slew of Minutemen including the notorios Anita and Gary Hynds. There are rumors going around that Benavides will be supporting Amezcua for Mayor and Thomas Gordon for Ward 6, as they share many of the same backers.
Councilmember Sal Tinajero drew three opponents, in Ward 6, including OC GOP Central Committee Member Thomas Gordon, who like Benavides is also an ally of Moreno and her Minutemen. Gordon maintains a second household in Denver, Colorado. He is a government worker for L.A. Unified, where he serves as an asbestos inspector.
Gordon got just over 24% of the vote, in 2006, when he ran for Mayor against Pulido, according to Smart Voter. He also won reelection on the OC GOP Central Committee this year, barely, coming in fifth out of six candidates. He got just 10.5% of the vote, according to Smart Voter.
“Community Volunteer” Helen Martinez, is also running. Her signatures are still being verified. She is a registered Democrat.
Nam Pham, who previously served with Moreno on the Santa Ana Library Board, ran for the Rancho Santiago Community College District’s Board of Education in 2008. He came in last place with 10.9% of the vote. Pham is a Republican.
The two incumbents who are up for reelection to the Santa Ana Unified School District’s Board of Education, John Palacio and Audrey Yamagata-Noji, both qualified for the ballot. I am their only challenger. There were nine candidates in all for the SAUSD School Board in 2008.
Palacio, like Gordon, maintains a second household out of state, in Palacio’s case that would be in Phoenix, Arizona. He runs the HEEF Foundation and as an SAUSD School Board Member he draws a salary from the School District as well as free healthcare. He has been on the SAUSD School Board for twelve years.
Noji is the Vice President of Student Affairs at Mt. San Antonio College, in Walnut. She made headlines a few weeks ago when she illegally expelled a student for Tweeting about a teacher. You can read about that scandal by clicking here. Yamagata-Noji has been on the SAUSD School Board for an astonishing twenty years.
Benavides goes after Mayor Pro Tem Alvarez while defending Moreno and the Minutemen again
Tonight’s Santa Ana City Council meeting blew up again as a few of the haters that Councilman David Benavides honored at the last meeting showed up to cry about the fact that the City Council ripped Benavides for doing that.
One of the speakers, Ann Menaldo, claimed tonight that she did not sign Lupe Moreno’s nomination papers, according to a friend of mine who was at the meeting. She lied. She did indeed sign the papers, when Moreno ran for the OC GOP Central Committee this year. Here is the form with her signature:
During the Council Members’ comments, Benavides once again ripped into his colleagues and he even went after Mayor Pro Tem Claudia Alvarez. He commented that she seconded the motion, a few years ago, that put Moreno on the Santa Ana Public Library Board. He did not mention that Mayor Miguel Pulido submitted that motion. Why did Benavides only go after Alvarez?
Alvarez spoke next – and she let Benavides have it. She said that the Council gave Moreno a chance but she proved to be a hater and they had to get rid of her. That is true. Pulido and company deserve much credit for dumping Moreno.
Alvarez was rudely interrupted by some of Benavides’ supporters, who you can see in the picture above.
Pulido said he wants to plan the event next year with Council members on the event committee, and they need to raise significant money so they can hold the event at Centennial Park with music, fireworks, etc. He suggested we do old-fashioned thinks like sack races, tug of war, bobbing for apples, etc. He said that everyone will know that we are united and we love and respect both this country and our city.
Bustamante said he wanted to spearhead the 2011 Santa Ana Independence Day event. He specifically said that “all citizens are welcome to participate.” His comments appeared to exclude those who are not citizens but do reside in our city. That is typical of Bustamante, who is a Republican and who is backed by the same people Benavides is involved with.
Benavides spoke again at the end and said he wanted to make some corrections. He said he did not lie to the City Staff by saying that the Council backed his recognition of the haters. He said the names of the Committee members were removed. However what he did not admit to was that certificates were presented to each of the Committee members including the Minutemen and their leader Moreno. Sure, they were not individually noted on the Agenda but all of them, including Thomas Gordon – who wasn’t even at the event, got their awards.
Pulido finally had to shut Benavides down as he was way over his three minutes.
Alvarez then asked Chief of Police Paul Walters to talk about tomorrow night’s National Night Out, at Davis Elementary, at 4 pm, to 7 pm. Click here to read about that event.
I am hearing now that the City Council has had it with Benavides. They have until this Friday to recruit a new candidate to replace him. It is very likely that by tomorrow they will all be renouncing him, withdrawing their support, and casting him to the dogs.
Stay tuned as my colleague, Sean Mill, has received information revealing that Benavides’ campaign committee is made up entirely of Usual Suspects. That post should be up by tomorrow afternoon.
When Mexican kindergarten students punked the Minutemen, in Santa Ana
Naui Huitzilopochtli is famous today for his video showing Lupe Moreno and her Minutemen taking over this year’s Independence Day event. But my favorite Naui video is the one above.
In that video, which was shot in May of 2007, Naui showed up at a Minuteman protest at the Mexican Consulate’s office in downtown Santa Ana. And then fate intervened.
The Minutemen were there but their hateful slogans were drowned out…by the Kindergarten kids across the street! They were standing on their playground equipment, so they could see over the wall surrounding their school, and pumping their little fists as they shouted gleefully “Mexico, Mexico!!” It was awesome!
Little did we know, back in 2007, that Lupe Moreno and her Minutemen would one day be honored by Councilman David Benavides…what would those little kids say about that?
Can Councilman David Benavides survive the Hatergate scandal?
Councilman David Benavides has been desperately trying to quell the firestorm that erupted when we broke the story that he honored a group of Minutemen and extremist Republicans who were recruited by Mexican-hater Lupe Moreno to take over this year’s Santa Ana Independence Day event.
Benavides has tried to argue that he didn’t know the Minutemen were involved but a new video has surfaced that clearly shows him bowing to Moreno and talking to her at the event. He certainly did know what was going on.
Many people in the community are wondering why Benavides would get involved with racists who hate his constituents. Now they will have a chance to ask him personally why he did this.
Benavides will be available the first Saturday of next month, August 7, for his “Community Office Hours,” from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., at the Southwest Senior Center, located at 2201 W. McFadden Avenue. The Senior Center is accessible by OCTA routes 66 and 145. You may call the City Council office at (714) 647-5200 for more information.
For the record, Benavides has been involved with Republicans and Usual Suspects since he first ran for office. Click here to see his past endorsements, which include:
- OC GOP member Tim Whitacre, who ran the failed racist campaign of Mexican-basher Bill Hunt this year
- Republican Councilman Carlos Bustamante, who was tossed off two State Commissions after his infamous “waterbra” comments
- Former SAUSD Trustee Rosie Avila, a Republican and past member of the OC GOP Central Committee who challenged Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez – but lost to her fellow Mexican-hater, Tan Nguyen. She ran again in a later race and Sanchez finished off her political career. Whitacre managed her first Congressional campaign.
- Current SAUSD Trustee Rob Richardson, a Republican who has helped to ruin the SAUSD.
- Don Cribb, the father of the arts movement – and a major backer of gentrification schemes. Benavides made him a city commissioner even though Cribb does not live in his ward.
- Ousted City Commissioner Glen Stroud, a Republican
- Glen’s wife Julie Stroud, who Benavides appointed to the Parks and Recreation Commission even though she does not live in his ward
- Debbie McEwen, the Mexican-hater who erected barricades in French Park, to keep Mexicans out, only to get sued by the ACLU. The barricades came down!
- Otto Bade, a Republican who once challenged Lou Correa – and lost
- Art Lomeli, a Republican resident of Orange Park Acres who is working on Al Amezcua’s campaign
Can Benavides survive the Hatergate scandal? That is hard to say. If no one challenges him in November he will win another term on the City Council. But my sources tell me that his aspirations to go to Sacramento to replace Jose Solorio in the 69th Assembly District when he terms out in 2012 are now dashed.
Will Benavides’ Hatergate scandal also bring down Republican City Council candidate Thomas Gordon and mayoral candidate Al Amezcua? There are rumors that Benavides, Gordon and Amezcua are going to be campaigning together as the “BAG” team. That is plausible as they share the same supporters. Mayor Miguel Pulido and the other City Council members have already been warned not to share anything of importance with Benavides as he cannot be trusted to be loyal to them.
Lupe Moreno declares jihad on Mexican civil rights activist
The Benavides Hatergate scandal blew up again today as Minuteman Lupe Moreno began a libelous jihad against Mexican civil rights activist Naui Huitzilopochtli. Moreno forwarded a letter asking her hater supporters to attack Naui on the O.C. Register’s website. The letter appears below.
Moreno filed a false police report with the SAPD claiming that Naui attacked a pastor at the Santa Ana Independence Day event that Moreno and her Minutemen friends took over. Naui tells me that is a total lie and that he would be willing to go get a statement from the minister in question.
Here is the real question – what sort of minister hangs out with Minutemen? Why does Lupe go all the way to Newport Beach to attend Liberty Baptist Church? Does this church condone hatred of immigrants? Click here to email the Pastor at Liberty Baptist.
Would Jesus have hated immigrants? Did he not admonish us to look after the needy? Shame on Moreno and Liberty Baptist for embracing an agenda worthy of Lucifer himself!
Here is Moreno’s hateful letter:
Dear friends,
As most of you know I have put an American Independence Day Event for the last 3 years in the city of Santa Ana with the help of most of you. We worked very hard and it was a great event. About 45 minutes before the event was over Naui showed up looking for me.
He did not find me right away and started problems with people attending. One of his videos even shows him filming while looking for me. He has spent the last 5 years hunting me down and shoving his camera in my face. He has made my grand children cry.
He verbally attacked someone at the event and he reacted and was filmed by Naui. It is on Utube now.
Naui also went after two pastors, but they spoke to him about Jesus Christ loving him and he left them alone. I had to call the police and they came out. By that time, Naui who is a coward took off.
It has made the local paper, only because one of the councilmen was going to give certificates to those on the committee including me. The whole Santa Ana city council walked out, because of my stand against illegal aliens.
I am asking to please read the article and send letters to the Santa Ana City Council and to the paper. There is a place on the Internet newspaper to leave comments on the most commented section. Please do not say anything that would cause more problems, counter Naui’s nasty comments.
Please, please pray for our cities and nation!!!
Thank you and blessings to all,
Lupe
Benavides Hatergate: The missing Independence Day video emerges
I met last night with Naui Huitzilopochtli and he graciously allowed me to borrow his video clips of the footage he shot at the Santa Ana Independence Day event on July 3, that was taken over by the Minuteman.
Naui said that he saw Republican volunteers registering voters. He approached them just as they were trying to connive a woman into registering as one of them. When he saw this he quickly asked her if she really wanted to be a Republican. Oh no, she replied, I am a Democrat. Naui wasn’t sure how many voters were fraudulently registered that day.
In the video you will see that Anita Hynds, a Minuteman, immediately started screeching at Naui to go away, even though he wasn’t doing anything wrong.
You will also see Santa Ana Councilman David Benavides literally bowing to Lupe Moreno, as she gives him instructions.
And another Minuteman takes the time to explain to Naui that Moreno needed his help to explain to the kids what the 4th of July is all about as all they know about is Cinco de Mayo.
The video also includes a priceless moment with former SAUSD Trustee Rosie Avila, who now says she wants kids to learn four languages. Sure Rosie.
This missing footage really fills in the blanks and it makes it clear that we should NEVER let Moreno run any other events in Santa Ana.
The O.C. Register piles on the Benavides Hatergate scandal
It has become the scandal that won’t go away. This time the Orange County Register piled on the David Benavides Hatergate scandal with a new article that is very illuminating. Here are a few choice excerpts from the article:
The incident has created fireworks in Santa Ana politics, prompting members of the City Council to walk out of a meeting this week in protest. It has also generated a new push for the city to take more control of Independence Day festivities – and to sponsor its own show of fireworks.
At the center of the debate is a short video that has now been viewed thousands of times on the Internet. In it, Yorba Linda resident Gary Hynds uses the word “wetback” in a testy exchange with a migrant-rights activist.
Hynds acknowledged in a brief phone interview this week that he had used the word and said: “That’s my opinion.” He then handed the phone to his wife, Anita, who said the activist had goaded him into saying it.
Her presence at the festival drew activist Naui Huitzilopochtli, who films anti-illegal-immigration rallies. He stopped at a table where Hynds and his wife were selling soft drinks.
His video doesn’t show how the exchange of words began; both he and Hynds say the other shouted first. The video clip begins with Huitzilopochtli asking: “How do I look like?” Hynds looks up from a book he is reading and says, “A wetback.”
As the debate heats up, Huitzilopochtli calls Hynds “the true wetback”; a friend with Huitzilopochtli calls Hynds an “(expletive) white guy.” Then they ask Hynds: “You think all these people are ‘wetbacks’ too?” Hynds looks at the camera and says, “Yeah.”
At one of its meetings earlier this month, the City Council set aside time to thank the organizers of the event with certificates of recognition but hurriedly scrapped those plans.
The councilman who had proposed that honor, David Benavides, brought it back up this week. This time, Mayor Miguel Pulido and Councilwoman Claudia Alvarez left the meeting. The only other council members who were there – Sal Tinajero and Vincent Sarmiento – distanced themselves from the recognition because of Moreno’s involvement and the video of Hynds.
“What we do here is a reflection on the entire council,” Sarmiento said. “Sometimes (people) are not deserving of recognition because they are hate-filled, they are intolerant, they are hostile.”
Benavides went ahead with the recognition.
