Community Policing forum for northeast Santa Ana residents set for March 30

West End Community Oriented Policing to present third Community Policing Forum for Santa Ana residents in North East District

Santa Ana, CA, – West End Community Oriented Policing, along with Connect-to-Council, will present the third Community Policing forum for the residents of Santa Ana. This forum will offer residents the opportunity to provide their input and assist in creating a community policing plan for Santa Ana. At the previous forums in January and February, some participants suggested that SAPD should build stronger partnerships with the community and faith-based organizations. Other suggestions are being solicited and the public is invited to share input. There are two more forums scheduled for the remaining policing districts (North East, and South East) in Santa Ana. Santa Ana now has both Pony and Little League baseball – which is better?

Kids in Santa Ana are getting ready for a new season of Little League baseball, but in North Santa Ana they are now split between an upstart Santa Ana Pony League that ousted the Northwest Santa Ana Little League, and the historic Northeast Santa Ana Little League.

As a Little League parent I always dreaded visiting the Northwest Santa Ana Little League. Many of the parents were too competitive. My son played at the AA level last year and at one game against a Northwest team the manager of the team was so rude to the umpire that I sought out the Northwest duty officer. She told me this was none of my business. I later sent an email to the Northwest board and they blew me off.

So when I heard that the Northwest League was switching to the Pony League I figured, “good riddance!” But they are cannibalizing kids from our area, as Pony can take kids from anywhere in Santa Ana. However NESALL is fielding teams at every level this year and our T-ball teams have really exploded, which bodes well for the future of Little League baseball in Northeast Santa Ana. Walmart not planning to fill the Food for Less vacancy in NE Santa Ana

Walmart is opening two new stores in Orange County, in Irvine and in Huntington Beach, according to the O.C. Register. Walmart also recently opened a new superstore in Anaheim. But there is no truth to the rumor that they are planning to open a store at the vacancy created when Food for Less closed their store in northeast Santa Ana, on Grand and 17th, according to Karen Haluza, a Planning Manager at the City of Santa Ana.

Haluza confirmed via email that there are in fact no current applications to fill that vacancy. Continue reading→

Santa Ana northeast neighbors meeting regarding medical pot, on May 19

It looks like some residents of northeast Santa Ana are riled up about medical marijuana, which was legalized by California voters awhile ago.

Here is an email that was circulated today about a meeting regarding medical marijuana dispensaries in northeast Santa Ana:

Good afternoon everyone,

I would like to call your attention to a meeting on the proliferation of Medical Marijuana Dispensaries in the City of Santa Ana. I live in North / East Santa Ana and there are currently 16 active dispensaries on 17th St. between the 5 Freeway and the 55 Freeway. The problems that these dispensaries are causing is a City wide concern impacting the quality of life for both the residents as well as the business community.

This meeting will be quite educational and I encourage everyone to attend. It’s being sponsored by the City of Santa Ana and the Santa Ana Police Dept.

The speakers are as follows:

1. Commander Ken Gominsky – SAPD Field Operations

2. Detective Michael Gibbons – SAPD District Investigations

3. Alvaro Nunez – Community Preservation Coordinator – City of Santa Ana Code Enforcement

4. Mike McCoy – SAPD Community Services Specialist

There wil also be some discussion on Unsightly Vacant Commercial Buildings and Vehicle / Property Crimes.
