Drug and Alcohol Abuse Treatment Works in Orange County

(Santa Ana) – A new report from the Orange County Health Care Agency found that adult clients of the County’s drug and alcohol treatment programs experienced significant reduction in drug use, improved health, and social functioning; increased employment rates; and a reduction in arrest, incarceration and reliance on medical services. The report examines the treatment outcomes for over 11,000 clients of Behavioral Health – Substance Use Disorder services between 2011 and 2013.

“We know that treatment works and can reduce drug/alcohol misuse and dependence,” said Mary Hale, County Health Behavioral Health Officer. “In addition to reduced drug and alcohol use, our clients also reported improvements in other areas of their lives such as decreased arrests and increased employment – becoming more productive members of our community.” Continue reading→

Benavides fundraiser now to be held at the cochinero that is the Yost Theatre

Poor Santa Ana Councilman David Benavides had to switch the location of his upcoming fundraising reception from Ketri Cafe to the Yost Theatre after we let the people of Santa Ana know about Ketri’s unfortunate record of health violations. However perhaps Benavides should have checked out the Yost Theatre’s health record before he selected them as the new location of his fundraiser, which is set for Oct 16, 2014, from 5:30 to 7:30 pm. It turns out the Yost is a real cochinero!

On July 10, 2014, the Yost received these health violations after a health inspection by the OC Health Care Agency:

Free chorro at Benavides campaign event on Oct. 16 at Ketri Cafe in DTSA

Santa Ana Councilman David Benavides is once again holding a fundraiser outside of his Ward, in Downtown Santa Ana, at Ketri Cafe, on Oct. 16, 2014, from 5:30 to 7:30 pm.

Benavides bills Ketri Cafe as “A Local Hidden Gem,” but I guess he hasn’t looked at their record of health violations.

Free Haz Mat and Underground Storage Workshops for local business owners

OC Health Care Agency Haz Mat and UST Portal Open Lab Training in Santa Ana

The Orange County Environmental Health Division is offering free training to Santa Ana business owners and operators. This agency regulates businesses that use or store hazardous materials at their facilities. These businesses include gas stations, auto repair shops, dry cleaners, manufacturing facilities (and any other type of industry where hazardous liquids, solids or compressed gases are used/stored).

They are required to submit a Hazardous Material Disclosure and Business Emergency Plan annually. Historically, these documents would have been submitted to Santa Ana Fire (then the Orange County Fire Authority). There have been many changes in the past couple of years and now the OC Health Care Agency implements these programs.

The OC Health Care Agency will be hosting free workshops in Santa Ana, on September 9, 2014, for business owners and operators to help them navigate the complex requirements associated with the hazardous materials forms and underground storage tank programs. Continue reading→

(Santa Ana) – The Orange County Health Care Agency has confirmed four cases of measles in Orange County in the last seven weeks, which is consistent with an increase seen throughout California. These cases raise the possibility that Orange County residents may be exposed to measles. The most recent case spent time in public locations in Orange County while contagious. Continue reading→

Orange County Health Profile Report Identifies Key Health Disparities

(Santa Ana) – A new report from the Orange County Health Care Agency shows a complex picture of health in Orange County. Orange County’s health indicators fare well compared to other counties and state and national data, however disparities exist in health conditions amongst groups of people based on economics, race, ethnicity, gender, age, and geography. The report provides a breakdown of many health and health-associated indicators at a sub-county level to help in understanding where these health disparities occur.

As just one example, while overall rates of obesity are lower in Orange County (23.8%) than in California (25.4%) and the nation (27.8%), obesity continues to disproportionately impact some communities more than others. With an obesity rate of 39.8%, Latina women are nearly twice as likely to be obese as compared to the overall population. Continue reading→

Now that Kim Pham, the 23-year-old young woman who was brutally beaten up on Friday night while waiting outside The Crosby, a hipster bar/restaurant/nightclub in Downtown Santa Ana, has died from her injuries one can expect that everything about DTSA will be scrutinized by the press. The same goes for The Crosby.

Bad enough that the police response to the beating was slow and security cameras appear to be nonexistent in DTSA. But The Crosby, as it turns out, also has a not so great health record. In fact their Health Permit was suspended in November!

OC Public Works and Health Care Agency Programs Receive 2011 CSAC Merit Awards

(Santa Ana, CA) — Two County of Orange programs were chosen to receive 2011 Merit Awards by the California State Association of Counties (CSAC).

The Health Care Agency’s “Surge OC” has improved how the local health care community will respond to future emergencies by bringing together the county’s 34 city emergency planners and first-responder organizations to OC Public Works’ recently developed Customer Care and Permit Services unit improved the permit process for customers, whose reported satisfaction “We are very proud that our programs have been selected from among 250 nominees statewide and recognized for using creativity and innovation to better serve and protect Orange County,” said Chairman Bill Campbell.
