County Celebrates 125th Birthday in 2014

Back in 1989, Orange County celebrated its 100th anniversary, or Centennial. Now, 25 years later, the County is preparing for another observance, this one of its 125th anniversary or Quasquicentennial. As approved by the Board of Supervisors, OC125, as the observance will be known, will celebrate Orange County’s rich 125 year history and some of the people, places and events that make Orange County unique.

When California became a state in 1850, what is now Orange County was a part of Los Angeles County. According to information from the OC Archives, several attempts in the 1870’s and ‘80s to form a new county failed, but in 1889, the area’s lone Assemblyman, Col. E.E. Edwards of Santa Ana, introduced a new bill to create Orange County. Santa Ana’s founder, William H. Spurgeon, a prominent Democrat, joined local Republican leader James McFadden in helping Col. Edwards lobby the State Legislature. They also enlisted the support of the San Francisco delegation, which was more than happy to see Los Angeles County lose some of its population and power. The bill passed in both houses of the State Legislature and was signed into law by Governor Robert Waterman on March 11, 1889. However, the bill as approved did not actually create Orange County; it only allowed for a vote of the local residents to decide the matter. When the vote was held on June 4, 1889, the measure passed easily: 2,509 to 500. Continue reading→

Orange County Health Profile Report Identifies Key Health Disparities

(Santa Ana) – A new report from the Orange County Health Care Agency shows a complex picture of health in Orange County. Orange County’s health indicators fare well compared to other counties and state and national data, however disparities exist in health conditions amongst groups of people based on economics, race, ethnicity, gender, age, and geography. The report provides a breakdown of many health and health-associated indicators at a sub-county level to help in understanding where these health disparities occur.

As just one example, while overall rates of obesity are lower in Orange County (23.8%) than in California (25.4%) and the nation (27.8%), obesity continues to disproportionately impact some communities more than others. With an obesity rate of 39.8%, Latina women are nearly twice as likely to be obese as compared to the overall population. Continue reading→

The Toll Roads in Orange County are removing cash toll collection in May 2014; Four new, nonstop ways to pay available now

IRVINE, Calif. –Jan. 06, 2014 – Cash-paying customers on the 73, 133, 241 and 261 Toll Roads in Orange County now have more ways to pay tolls that don’t require stopping at a toll plaza or fumbling for exact change.

The Transportation Corridor Agencies (TCA) today introduced three new ExpressAccount™ payment options, which give customers more choices on how to pay tolls. TCA, which operates The Toll Roads (SRs 73, 133, 241 and 261) will remove all cash toll collection from the 51-mile toll road network in May 2014. Continue reading→

Winter Holiday DUI Campaign – Update #4

DUI Arrests Down & No DUI Fatalities

SANTA ANA, California (December 27, 2013) – The Winter Holiday Anti-DUI crackdown has resulted in a significant number of DUI arrests from local routine traffic enforcement and ‘Avoid the 38’ DUI deployments during the past several days in Orange County.

From 12:01 a.m. on Friday, December 13 through midnight on Thursday December 26, officers representing 38 county law enforcement agencies have arrested 597 individuals for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. In 2012, 694 DUI arrests occurred during the same fourteen (14) day time period. There have been no DUI related deaths reported. (NOTE: These numbers are only provisional with some agencies yet to report). Continue reading→

ORANGE – The Orange County Transportation Authority is helping to make roads safer during New Year’s Eve celebrations by offering free bus rides from 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 31 (New Year’s Eve) to 2:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 1 (New Year’s Day).
