UPDATE: Supervisor Todd Spitzer now says that he is going to ask the Supervisors to reconsider restaurant letter grade health ratings! Thank you Supervisor Spitzer!
Despite a warning from the county grand jury, the Orange County Board of Supervisors declined, back in December of 2008, to impose a letter grading system designed to inform would-be diners about the health safety record of restaurants, according to the L.A. Times.
Supervisor Janet Nguyen cast the key vote against the letter grading system for restaurants. I broke the news afterwards that O.C. Supervisor Janet Nguyen’s husband, Tom Bonikowski, owned a Lee’s Sandwiches franchise in Stanton that had been fined many times by the O.C. HCA. She never reported that when she voted against the letter grade ratings – and it blew up in the press. Bonikowski has since sold the restaurant. Continue reading→

The Orange County grand jury is planning two more reports on CalOptima, the county’s health plan for disabled, low-income and elderly residents, whose oversight by the Board of Supervisors was the subject of a highly critical report last month, CalOptima CEO Michael Schrader said Thursday” according to the Voice of OC.
Here a few more key excerpts from the Voice of OC:
Among its recommendations, the grand jury urged county supervisors to appoint more than one of its members to the CalOptima board. Currently, only Supervisor Janet Nguyen serves on the board. She engineered a complete restructuring of the CalOptima board that left it, as the grand jury noted, with no member who served longer than 20 months and most who have been there less than a year. *Fast Forward Growth: Strategies to Increase Your Sales in Today’s World*
(Santa Ana)—Women are starting more and more businesses every year, according to studies conducted by American Express and The Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation. In fact, in the last 15 years, the number of women-owned companies has increased by 54 percent and their revenue has increased by 58 percent. According to the U.S. Census, there are more than 27 million small businesses nationwide, and more than 28 percent are owned by women. Nevertheless, only two percent of women-owned businesses bring in more than $1 million in annual revenue, versus five percent of all firms. Continue reading→
I passed dozens of mobile homes as I drew close to today’s 2013 Orange County Tet Parade – a massive celebration of the Chinese Lunar New Year, in Little Saigon. I finally arrived at Bushard St. and found a parking spot in a residential neighborhood, then walked less than a mile to the east side of the parade grandstand, on Bolsa Ave. There were crowds already forming – a mix of young children and their parents, and many older Vietnamese Americans too.
Unbeknownst to me, the gay activists who caused so much angst this week by suing the parade organizers, after they were banned from marching in the parade, had set up west of the grandstand. A few of the politicians who participated in the parade stopped by, according to media reports, to talk to the activists. One of the elected officials, RSCCD Trustee Jose Solorio, climbed out of his car and refused to go any further, opting to stay with the protesters. Continue reading→
Update on 2/10/13: None of the Santa Ana City Council Members showed up to the Tet Parade nor did I see any of the gay activists.
The controversy that has brewed all week will continue at the Tet Parade scheduled for this Sunday, February 10, at 9 am, at the intersection of Bolsa and Magnolia.
They gay activists who were told by the parade organizers that they could not participate in the parade sued the organizers but a Judge found against them this week.
In the wake of that court decision a number of local elected officials have declared that they will be boycotting the parade. This is by the way a parade that almost didn’t happen, as the City of Westminster is broke and couldn’t pay for it. Volunteers worked very hard to raise the money to hold the traditional Lunar New Year parade, in Little Saigon. Continue reading→
“Orange County officials have decided not to renew an exclusive contract with Latino Health Access (LHA) to provide promotores services throughout the county, opting instead to divvy up the approximately $500,000 contract among several community organizations,” according to the Voice of OC.
America Bracho, President and CEO of LHA, says that the county’s decision is political payback. That is of course complete B.S. But in reality this is just desserts for Ms. Bracho, who originally hails from Venezuela, where she claims she was a rural doctor, though my sources say she does not have a medical degree. She has however since earned a Master’s Degree in Public Health. Continue reading→

Reportedly over 800 Orange County residents have sent in applications to become the next Orange County Clerk-Recorder. But will any of them really have a chance – or will the seat go to a political appointment?
Former State Senator Dick Ackerman and former State Assemblyman Chris Norby, both Republicans from Fullerton, could be the leaders of the pack. (Ackerman now lives in Irvine).
I am told that Ackerman will likely hire Laura Cunningham, who served as former Supervisor Bill Campbell’s Chief of Staff, if he gets selected to serve as Clerk-Recorder. Continue reading→
