Darrell Johnson Begins Post as OCTA Chief Executive

Johnson replaces long-time transportation veteran Will Kempton who retired Feb. 28

ORANGE – Darrell Johnson began his new post today as the chief executive officer of the Orange County Transportation Authority.

OCTA is the countywide transportation agency with 1,500 employees and an annual budget of $1 billion. Under the direction of a 17-voting member board of directors, Johnson is responsible for planning, financing and coordinating Orange County’s freeway, street and rail development, as well as managing bus services, commuter-rail services and paratransit service for people with disabilities. Convict who escaped from Theo Lacy Jail caught in Oceanside

The Orange County Sheriff’s Department announced today in a press release that “at approximately 5:30 a.m., Saith Na, the inmate that escaped from Theo Lacy Jail on Friday, March 1, 2013 was captured.”

Investigators with the Orange County Sheriff’s Department followed up on information that Na was in the Oceanside area. He was located in a motel in Oceanside and taken into custody without incident. Continue reading→

How Latino candidates fared in the O.C. Nov. 6 general election

Two winners – U.S. Rep. Loretta Sanchez and Pres. Barack Obama

Fullerton residents are in shock today as they deal with the fact that Assemblyman Chris Norby now needs a job, having lost to Fullerton Mayor Sharon Quirk-Silva. She ran an aggressive campaign and made heavy use of social media. Norby, on the other hand, seemed to be trying to coast to victory.

While Quirk-Silva’s victory is a great one for Orange County’s Latino voters, I am saddened to see that the 69th Assembly District is now represented by Tom Daly. There is no way he will win re-election in two years, but for now we are stuck with him.

Santiago Canyon College Awarded $1.25 Million Upward Bound Math and Science Grant

O.C. College Benefits from a Trio of Grants to Boost STEM Programs

(Santa Ana)— Santiago Canyon College (SCC) recently got news that it was selected by the U.S. Department of Education to receive $250,000 annually in a five-year grant from the U.S. Department of Education for its Upward Bound Math and Science (UBMS) program. The funds will help prepare high school students for post-secondary education programs that lead to careers in the fields of math and science. The program will make it possible for 62 students in Orange Unified School District to participate in a cohort model in which a group of students moves through all classes and phases of the program together. SANTA ANA, CA (September 14, 2012) – The Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA) is proposing a bus fare adjustment in 2013 to help offset rising operational costs and dwindling revenue due to high unemployment and slow job recovery. Without an increase in revenue, OCTA may not meet the Transportation Development Act (TDA) mandate that passengers pay at least 20 percent of bus operating costs in order for the operating agency to qualify for sales tax funding. Will U.S. Rep. Loretta Sanchez get a free pass this year?

U.S. Representative Loretta Sanchez lost her campaign money in the Kinde Durkee scandal – but it may not matter. Her new 46th congressional district “encompasses most of Santa Ana, parts of Garden Grove, Anaheim, Westminster and Fullerton. Previous drafts of the maps gave the area, which is home to Disneyland and a heavy population of immigrants, a slight Republican edge,” according to the L.A. Times.  The district is 45 percent Democrat and 32 percent Republican, according to the O.C. Register.

And the “latest maps, keep the Latino voting population nearly the same as in her current district, but edge out some of the Asian American voters by splitting Little Saigon.”  Not to worry if you are a Vietnamese American voter in the O.C.  I hear that Congressman Dana Rohrabacher is going to retire in a couple of years.  His new district includes a big chunk of Little Saigon.  It is quite possible that the seat will end up being represented by a Vietnamese American some years down the road.
