BOXING COACH SENTENCED TO TWO YEARS IN PRISON FOR SEXUALLY ASSAULTING TWO 14-YEAR-OLD BOYS IN HIS SANTA ANA HOME

SANTA ANA – A boxing coach was convicted and sentenced today to two years in state prison and mandatory lifetime sex offender registration for sexually assaulting two 14-year-old boys, whom he met through a Santa Ana boxing club. Anthony Serrano, 45, Santa Ana, pleaded guilty to the court to four felony counts of lewd acts on a child. The defendant was facing a maximum sentence of five years in state prison.

At the time of the crimes, Serrano worked as a boxing coach at Santa Ana Boxing Club. Serrano met both of his victims through the boxing club. Continue reading→

SANTA ANA – A boxing coach will be arraigned today for sexually assaulting two 14-year-old boys, whom he met through a Santa Ana boxing club. Anthony Serrano, 45, Santa Ana, is charged with four felony counts of lewd acts on a child and faces a maximum sentence of five years in state prison if convicted. The People will be requesting Serrano be held on $200,000 bail at his arraignment today, Tuesday, July 17, 2012, in Department CJ-1, Central Jail, Santa Ana. The time is to be determined. Santa Ana boxing club’s leader allegedly arrested for sexual abuse

Local sports legend Anthony Serrano, the head of the Santa Ana Boxing Club, has been arrested, according to the OC Weekly. The official press release about this arrest has not yet been issued by the Orange County District Attorney’s office. According to the Weekly, the “police arrested Serrano on charges that he sexually abused one of his boxers.”

Serrano has run the Santa Ana Boxing Club for the last ten years and is listed on their contact page. The boxing club is part of the Orange County Youth Commission, which “was launched in 1997 by Rosemarie Avila and a group of concerned community members who recognized the needs of children in high-poverty areas of Orange County and wanted to make a difference in their lives,” according to their website. The Santa Ana Boxing Club/Orange County Youth Commission, needs your help to win a $250,000 grant from Pepsi. Click here to vote. Hurry and vote as the voting ends on Jan. 31.

The Santa Ana Boxing Club/Orange County Youth Commission’s goals are:

To open a 2nd OC Youth Commission Sports Club in Santa Ana
To give the Santa Ana Boxing Club a Face Lift!
To help more youth in Santa Ana to stay off drugs & out of gangs
To give youth a safe place to go after school & during summer.
To help youth to understand that their lives have value.

The “Open New Sport Center to Keep Inner City Youth Out of Gangs.” project encourages Sports, Education and Mentoring to all youth in Santa Ana.

For 13 years they have helped hundreds of youth Stay Off Drugs & Stay Out of Gangs but there are hundreds more that need help. Young people are being killed by gangs every year in Santa Ana and they help to prevent that. Their goal is to help youth understand that their lives have value and purpose. Getting them involved in sports helps them develop discipline, team work and to set goals.

They need a 2nd location in Santa Ana to be able to work with MORE at risk youth. They have more youth that want to join than they have room for and many of them come from the north side of Santa Ana, where they would like to open their 2nd club. They also provide each youth with free tutoring and mentoring. Their project also includes reviving their 40-year-old Boxing Club.

Let’s keep these kids off the streets and get them into the Boxing Ring!

How will the 250K be Used?

Budget Notes: What is not covered in the budget is the planning and volunteer hours to set up New Sports Club and continued hours of volunteered time at both of the Sports Clubs. Budget will not cover other staff positions that are covered by other grants or rent and utilities for the Santa Ana Boxing Club.

The Santa Ana Boxing Club hosted their 4th Annual “Off the Streets and into the Ring” event yesterday. The show was sponsored by Northgate Gonzalez Markets; Attorney Deborah Vasquez; UFCW 324; and Chicanos Unidos. The boxing show was held at 901 E. 4th St., in Santa Ana.

The crowd was fairly large for such a warm day. Everyone had a great time. The event included raffles and there were vendors selling a lot of different items. My son Jimmy really enjoyed the homemade ice cream. I had some too and it was terrific.

The boxers varied in age. I saw one lad get in the ring who was only ten years old. He was quite good. His coach said they have trained a lot. I believe it. It is great to see this program helping our young people find ways to get fit and stay busy.

On the corner of 4th St. and Garfield in Santa Ana stands the Santa Ana Boxing Club, a place rich in history and full of heart. The gym is located between two known gangs, next to a bar and in a poor part of Santa Ana. It is located in the empowerment zone area of the city.

Here is additional information regarding the Santa Ana Boxing Club:

Back in the 70s, John Ramirez Sr. opened the gym. It was considered a safe haven for the young people in this low-income neighborhood. John Ramirez, Sr. had a way with the youth and when they entered the gym it was neutral ground. For years the City of Santa Ana has supported the gym with Community Development Block Grants.
