Santa Ana High School invites you to the production of In The Heights to be held March 27 – 29. The play is set in Washington Heights, a Hispanic neighborhood in Manhattan and very reminiscent of our own community in Santa Ana.

Come and meet Santa Ana High School Graduate Vinicio Murillo (Class of 2006), author of the children’s book Roderick Roach, 1/11/14 at his book signing at Libreria Martinez de Chapman University located at 216 N. Murillo was born in Santa Ana and is a student at California State University, Fullerton. He’ll be introducing and signing his first published book, Roderick Roach, the first in a planned trilogy.  The book introduces Rod, an 11-year-old student at the Wentworth Academy for Children with Special Abilities. Rod has the power of invisibility, but he’s overshadowed by his world-famous best friend, Ezra, who can manipulate blue fire. Then Rod gets the chance of a lifetime when he must face a dangerous dragon terrorizing the school. Does he have what it takes to protect his friends and conquer the dragon? Anti-war protesters to hand out fliers at Santa Ana High School on 5/30

Peace activists will be providing information to students the military won’t provide – How to get out if you join, stats on jobs, giving up your rights, and more, at Santa Ana High School on Thursday, May 30, 2013, at 6:30 am, according to a Facebook event page.

The event organizers are asking their followers to “be polite and don’t walk on school property, and please don’t block sidewalks.”  And apparently they will have fliers in Spanish for parents, too. Continue reading→

14-YEAR-OLD GANG MEMBER CHARGED WITH ATTEMPTED MURDER FOR SHOOTING A 16-YEAR-OLD BOY IN THE CHEST

SANTA ANA – A 14-year-old gang member was charged today with attempted murder for shooting and causing great bodily injury to a 16-year-old boy outside Santa Ana High School. Oswaldo Sotello, 14, Santa Ana, is being charged as an adult with one felony count of attempted murder and one felony count of street terrorism with sentencing enhancements for the personal discharge of a firearm causing great bodily injury and criminal street gang activity. If convicted, Sotello faces a maximum sentence of 40 years to life in state prison and is being held on $1 million bail. Sotello is scheduled for a continued arraignment hearing on May 25, 2012, at 8:30 a.m. in Department C-55, Central Justice Center, Santa Ana. Continue reading→

The SAUSD reacts to the arrest of a former teacher on molestation charges

The SAUSD’s Superintendent, Thelma Meléndez de Santa Ana, Ph.D., has issued a formal statement regarding the arrest of a former SAUSD teacher on charges of molesting two students and possessing graphic child pornagraphy, as follows, “We are deeply troubled to learn that a former teacher allegedly engaged in this reprehensible behavior and took advantage of the trust inherent in his profession. We are cooperating fully with the authorities, and encourage anybody with information that might aid their investigation to contact either the District Attorney’s office or the Newport Beach Police Department immediately.”

UPDATE: My daughter Becky told me this evening that she complained about the teacher who was arrested, Alex Bassinne, in 2007, when she was a student at Santa Ana High School.  Apparently Bassinne tried to touch her neck while he admired a necklace she was wearing.  Becky met with the Assistant Principal at Santa Ana High.  Unfortunately the Assistant Principal refused to conduct an investigation.  Becky was transferred to another class but Bassinne was allowed to continue teaching.  The girls he allegedly molested in 2009 and 2010 would have never been molested if the Assistant Principal my daughter complained to had done his job! “I commend both the Santa Ana Police Department and Santa Ana Unified School District Police Department on today’s arrest of the suspect in the Santa Ana High School student shooting.

The SAUSD responds to off campus after school shooting of S.A. High student

On Friday, April 27, 2012, at approximately 3:20 p.m. a Santa Ana High School student was the victim of a shooting that took place off campus after school last Friday, at 914 W. Walnut Street, which is very close to the campus as you can see in the picture above.

The “shooting took place about 3 p.m. when a 10th-grader and a friend were walking home from Santa Ana High School westbound on Walnut Street near Flower Street, Santa Ana police Cpl. Anthony Bertagna said,” according to the O.C. Register.

After the suspect fired a single shot, the victim ran, collapsing in an alley behind Walnut Street, the school’s principal, Julie Infante, said, according to NBC News.  The shooter — described as a Latino male aged 16 to 17 and wearing a black hooded sweatshirt — fired a single shot before running off, police said, according to Fox News.
