Santa Ana, Calif. (April 2, 2018) – As of March 28, 2018, the County of Orange concluded its 30-day motel program for individuals previously encamped along the Santa Ana Riverbed. The program, which began at the end of February 2018, involved 697 individuals and 51 motels throughout Orange County.

Update on Sheriff’s Department enhanced homeless outreach
SANTA ANA, Ca. (Oct. 26, 2017) – After seven weeks of an enhanced enforcement presence along the Santa Ana Riverbed and in County flood control channels, the Orange County Sheriff’s Department, along with partner law enforcement agencies from Anaheim, Orange, Santa Ana and Fountain Valley, has made 180 arrests and, in concert with other agencies and organizations, offered services and resources to hundreds.
The Orange County Sheriff’s Department on Sept. 6 increased efforts along the riverbed, and on Sept. 16 launched an enhanced deployment to target the criminal element proliferating in homeless encampments, while continuing to offer services and resources for those living along the riverbed. A man was found shot along the riverbed Sunday, Sept. 17, according to the O.C. Register.
SAPD police officers were called to the scene, at the Santa Ana River west of North Fairview Street and West 5th Street and found an injured man, at about 5:47 p.m. Continue reading

OCSD expands homeless outreach efforts to target crime along Santa Ana Riverbed
SANTA ANA, Ca. (Sept. 12, 2017) – The Orange County Board of Supervisors today unanimously approved a resolution to support enhanced patrol efforts along the Santa Ana Riverbed and County flood control channels.
The action by the Board is consistent with the Sheriff’s Department’s efforts to expand its already-established Homeless Outreach Team (HOT) with an enforcement detail tasked with targeting crime along the Santa Ana Riverbed. Continue reading

Advisory: First Street Bridge Fire Causes Westbound Lane Closures
This afternoon, a fire under the First Street Bridge over the Santa Ana River was reported. The fire intensity was aided by propane and liquid flammable paint.
The damage has forced the closure of all three lanes in the westbound direction until further notice. The closure will not impact access to residents or businesses between the Bridge and Fairview Street. Continue reading

Advisory: Four SAPD Officer Rescue Three From The Santa Ana River Bed
Summary: On Saturday, 2-18-2017, at 12:30 p.m., Officers were dispatched to 1st Street and the Santa Ana riverbed reference several subjects screaming for help. Upon arrival, officers located three people in the center of the riverbed, a female adult and her 8-year old child struggling to stay above water as well as a male who had jumped into the water in an attempt to rescue the woman and child. Four SAPD Officers entered into the water and were able to successfully extract the three out of the riverbed, at which time they learned another child was still missing. Continue reading

The ACLU requested a temporary restraining order Friday against county officials, demanding they remove the fences they erected this week around part of the homeless encampment along the Santa Ana River, according to the O.C. Register.
Earlier this week the O.C. Department of Public Works erected multiple six-foot, chainlink fences around the Santa Ana Riverbed between the Chapman and Orangewood bridges, entrapping nearly 100 individuals and their belongings, according to the ACLU. Continue reading

HOMELESSNESS ALONG THE SANTA ANA RIVER

The Department has received inquiries regarding an increase in homeless/transient persons who have taken up residence along the Santa Ana River and river trail area.
The riverbed and river trail are the jurisdiction of County of Orange and the Sheriff’s Department. As such, the encampment and crime and quality of life issues related to it are not directly in our jurisdiction. The County and Sheriff’s Department have a countywide strategy in dealing with these issues; including outreach, education and enforcement. Either this relatively new encampment or the homeless/transients that have lived under the overpasses of the Santa Ana River for many years have an impact on our community when they come into town. We deal with those issues as they arise as best we can. Continue reading
A male 17-year old juvenile was stabbed and killed in Santa Ana today, according to the SAPD, Case Number 16-23667.
At about 12:50 p.m., SAPD police officers responded to the Santa Ana Riverbed at 2700 W. First Street and found the male juvenile stabbing victim. Continue reading

SANTA ANA, CA (August 12, 2014) – The City of Santa Ana has been awarded $1,030,800 grant to develop a 1/2 acre park at Memory Lane and the Santa Ana River, adjacent to the Vista Del Rio Housing Project.
The grant was funded under the Housing Related Parks Program. The program provides funding for parks and recreation projects that benefit the community and add to the quality of life. The program awards funding on a per-bedroom basis for residential units in very low to low-income household. $25 million was available in this funding cycle for projects in the State of California.
