On Friday morning, January 27 at about 1 a.m. SAPD police officers responded to the area of 100 South Mountain View after receiving calls about a shooting.
Witnesses reported an altercation between two males and minutes later a male checked into a local hospital for emergency care with a gunshot wound, according to SAPD Case # 17-02529. Continue reading

MAN TO FACE TRIAL FOR SHOOTING-MURDER OF SISTER’S BOYFRIEND BEFORE FLEEING TO MEXICO
SANTA ANA, Calif. – A man is scheduled to face trial on Monday for the shooting-murder of his sister’s boyfriend before fleeing to Mexico. Adan Rodriguez Leon, 34, Santa Ana, was charged on April 13, 2015, with one felony count of murder and a sentencing enhancement for personal discharge of a firearm causing death. If convicted, Leon faces a maximum sentence of 52 years to life in state prison. The defendant is being held on $5 million bail, and opening statements are scheduled to begin Monday, Jan. 30, 2017, at 9:00 a.m. in Department C-44, Central Justice Center, Santa Ana.
At approximately 2:30 p.m. on April 8, 2015, Leon is accused of going to the home of his sister’s boyfriend, 39-year-old Paul Guzman, in Santa Ana. The defendant is accused of contacting Guzman and walking down the sidewalk with him. Leon is accused of pulling out a loaded firearm, shooting the victim multiple times, and fleeing the scene. The MainPlace Mall took two more hits this week as Olive Garden announced that they are closing the restaurant they have had at that mall for over 25 years, and the clothing store Chico’s also closed down this week, according to the O.C. Register.
The good news is that the Olive Garden is staying in Santa Ana – they are literally moving across the street from the MainPlace Mall to the City Place, where they are taking over the vacancy that was left when McCormick & Schmick’s closed that location five years ago. Continue reading
While the Santa Ana City Council considers blowing $123 million in Federal funds, while stubbornly clinging to their new Sanctuary City status, folks keep getting shot. Two more men were shot and wounded tonight – a day after two men were shot yesterday evening.

Community: Response to President Trump’s Executive Order on Immigration
SANTA ANA – The Santa Ana City Council, who recently adopted an ordinance solidifying into law a resolution declaring the City of Santa Ana a sanctuary for all its residents, has been confronted by President Donald Trump’s Executive Order that targets what he refers to as “sanctuary cities.” The City of Santa Ana respects the Office of the President of the United States, but respectfully disagrees with President Trump’s Executive Order that would take federal funds away from “sanctuary cities.”
“The safety and well-being of our community is our number-one priority. Santa Ana is committed to equality, and will continue to treat all its residents with respect and dignity,” said Mayor Miguel A. Pulido. Continue reading

SANTA ANA, Calif. – A third-striker gang member on parole is scheduled to be arraigned today for attempting to murder a father and his son by shooting at them in a Santa Ana gang safety zone for the benefit of his gang.
John Salgado, 31, Santa Ana, is charged with two felony counts of attempted premeditated murder, two felony counts of assault with a semiautomatic firearm, two felony counts of shooting at an occupied motor vehicle, two felony counts of possession of a firearm by a felon, one felony count of felon carrying a loaded firearm in public, and one felony count of possession of ammunition by a prohibited person, with sentencing enhancements for personal discharge of a firearm and criminal street gang activity. Advisory: SANTA ANA POLICE DEPARTMENT SERVES SEARCH WARRANTS ON ILLEGAL MARIJUANA DISPENSARIES
During the morning hours of Thursday, January 26, 2017, Police Detectives assigned to the Santa Ana Police Department’s Vice and Narcotics Unit served search warrants at Sky High Dispensary located at 419 W. Seventeenth Street and the Elevated Dreams dispensary located at 413 W. Seventeenth Street in the City of Santa Ana. Detectives were assisted by members of the Santa Ana Code Enforcement and Planning & Building departments, as well as representatives of the Orange County Fire Authority.
Since December 2013, in response to numerous complaints from surrounding homeowners, businesses, and community groups, the City has employed a variety of administrative, civil, and criminal enforcement measures against numerous dispensaries, their owner/operators, and property owners, including those associated with Sky High and Elevated Dreams dispensaries. Specifically, criminal charges have been filed against the property owner for allowing these illegal businesses to continue to operate on his property. Despite these efforts, both dispensaries have continued to operate. Sky High and Elevated Dreams dispensaries are located adjacent to the Floral Park, Morrison Park, and West Floral residential communities and are located less than a mile from Willard Intermediate School, a charter school and a pre-school. SAPD police officers tried to pull over 21-year old Daisy Oropeza on Tuesday during a routine traffic stop at the 500 block of S. Sullivan Street however she refused to obey them, taking off instead and leading the police on a 25-minute chase that finally ended at a cul-de-sac, according to The Patch.
Then Oropeza doubled down on her ridiculous and unlawful behavior after she was cornered by two SAPD police officers, crashing the stolen 1992 Honda Accord she was driving into the police car. Continue reading
There was another shooting at around 9:45 p.m. in Santa Ana tonight at a business center located at the 1600 block of E. 4th Street., according to the O.C. Register.
Witnesses told the police that the shooter was still on the loose and that two victims, who are both men in their 20s, had already been routed to a local hospital, according to the SAPD. One of the victims was stabbed in his upper torso and the other man was shot in his leg. Continue reading
U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order today that will cut some federal money to so-called “sanctuary cities” without defining which funding will be cut or what communities the administration will define as sanctuaries, according to the O.C. Register.
Santa Ana gets about $123 million in federal funds every year – although I heard a report on a radio news station today that the funding is closer to $30 million a year. Santa Ana Councilman Sal Tinajero told that news station that the City of Santa Ana can afford to lose that $30 million a year as we have a rainy day fund with $40 million in it. There have been 22 shooting incidents reported by SAPD so far this January. As bad as last year was this year is starting off even worse.
So you would think that with all of these violent crimes happening in our neighborhoods on almost a daily occurrence, that the Santa Ana City Council’s Public Safety and Neighborhood Improvement Committee would want to meet to discuss these shootings, right? Jocelyn Cano of Santa Ana, a 23-year-old woman with a lengthy criminal history pleaded guilty on Monday and was immediately sentenced to nine years in prison for carjackings in Irvine, Costa Mesa and Tustin, according to the O.C. Register.
Cano flipped out on March 9, 2015, when she smashed the driver-side window of a 27-year old Huntington Beach resident’s 2011 Toyota Prius as he was stuck in traffic on the 73 Freeway going north. She ordered the victim out of his car and then took off in his vehicle. Continue reading
